My friend went to look at a decent '95 GST today. The guy said the car didn't start. We checked the oil and antifreeze and they were dry. The guy said that he shut it off while sitting in traffic due to overheating, I decided that sounds like a headgasket. I would also belive that the headgasket is fargone enough to lower the compression to the point of a no start. The battery was dead, but the owner swears that the battery is just dead from sitting.

We are looking to get $650 for it.

The missing oil is confusing me, usually that screams a hole in the block. Would anyone agree with me or could it just be a blown headgasket, with other minor problems?

Thanks guys, I hate posting new threads but I am baffled, I would expect our iron blocks to be hard to throw a rod on.

I will know tonight if I am doing a 4g63 swap in a dsm (new engine for me).

I don't think a blown headgasket would cause the oilpan to be dry. A big leak, or cracked block sounds more reasonable. Also, how long was the car sitting for? Was the dipstick rusted?

Well an easy way to check for a hole in the block is to add in the 4qts, and see if it pours out. Since its below the reading on the dipstick, then the hole would be low. NOT saying that there is a hole though.

Do a leakdown test on it, and a compression test.

yeah i would slowly add some oil to it to see how many bottles it takes and then see if anyseaps out any where. it might just have a bad leak. as far as the antifreeze goes it could be a cracked radiator hose. fill it with water and see what happens. also do a compression and leakdown on it.

For some of us, it screams, "Lying seller".

Usually, threads like this get looped into the "What's This DSM Worth?" thread, for one simple reason: we can't assess what we can't touch. Not even photos are enough to help.

Find a local who's savvy to look it over with you.

I feel the same as Defiant about the seller. BUT if you could talk him down to $300 or so you could just flip it for more $$$ for parting it out...or just have someone that is "savvy" look at it, and the should be able to ask good questions, and see BIG problems with it.
