After driving down the highway, I heard grinding noises, pulled over.. no oil.. Got my oil pan off and this is what I found in it. What is it? There's threads inside it.

yep had that happen to me, bad news all around it caused my oil pump to lock up and ruined all of my bearings.

How do you check the bearings? Is that something where I would have to take the block apart?

You're going to have to replace your front cover and oil pump. That shaft gets a bolt in it to attach the oil pump's drive gear. With it falling apart like that. My guess is that it wasn't installed correctly.

That is the front of the back balance shaft that goes into the oil pump. There is a bolt that goes through the oil pump into the threads on it. Looks like the bolt came loose. You need timing belts, balance shaft removal kit and oil pump to fix. Its not too difficult. Cross your fingers that it didn't do anymore damage. I would look at the back balance shaft bearings when you have the oil pump off. When I removed my balance shafts the bearings were about to fall out of the block so I tapped them the rest of the way out with a screw driver. This way they didn't fall into the oil pan on down the road.

Worse case: New front case,newmain/rod bearings, timing components,i'd re-ring the block while at it.DIY~$500
