hey just looking for some imput on this one...

I just got done installing my rebuilt transmission and i am having problems with it going into fifth gear.

here is what the setup is in the car:

1990 talon tsi awd
1992 shifter assembly
1991-1993 shift cables (brand new)
1992 shift cable bracket
ptt twin disc clutch installed (put in a clutch pedal stop)

I already tried removing the shift cables and the transmission will not go into the fifth gear by hand.

i am wondering if it will go into fifth gear when i drive it? I cant actually take the car for a test drive because i havent put insurance on it yet so its on 4 jack stands.

i wont name the shop who rebuild the transmission (because it could be me doing something wrong and i dont want to give them a bad rep) but i will say that it is a reputable shop and it wasent a cheep rebuild.

thanks for the replys in advanced

when the shift cables are connected and the engine is running it will not let me select fifth gear...
i even tried holding it gently and letting out the clutch a little to see if it would then slip into gear.

(car is completly off the ground on stands)

There is definitely a problem with it if it won't go if you are doing like you said. I'd pull the end cover off and check it out. They could of driven the roll pin in to far or something like that. Does reverse work fine?

Try to loosen the reverse light switch and see if that may be too tight.

I've also knocked the roll pin in too far before as well.

I dident have it apart myself though... it was done at a transmission rebuild shop. should i call them or do you guys think this will "fix itself" once i get it on the road... i dont want to get into the transmission at all, dont want to viod the warranty or anything like that .

also i tried loosening the reverse switch and it dident help me at all... i was thinking a popet ball might be stuck or something like that but like i said i dont really want to take anything apart

seem to be stuck here?

thanks

alright, I will give the shop a call on monday... pretty dissapointed though. got the transmission shipped from way down in the states and i live in ontario. already waited 3 weekd for it to come in!

thanks for your help guys ill let you know what happens .

no I havent redone the assembly... i just adjusted the clutch though and its not dragging. i pushed the clutch down with light pressure on the shifter to get it to slide into 3rd and adjusted my pedal stop about an inch of pedal travel after that point.

I would find a transmission shop around you to take a look at it. You will have to spend 100 each way just to ship it.

to solve this thread... i fixed the problem myself. diden't want to have to touch anything on it but i figured that if i was going to pay the shipping both ways ($175 each way) and have to wait 2 weeks to get it back that i might aswell see if i could figure it out

it was actually something that no one suggested yet... the poppet ball for the fifth and reverse shift rail was not installed properly. i believe it was stuck in a wear spot in the casting? anyways, pressed it in with a screw driver and re torqued the nut and it goes into fifth now.

pretty dissapointed in the shop that built it though for obviously not checking for proper opperation of the transmission before it left the shop

thanks for the help
