no cat?

To everyone who is crying about people not running cat. converters, have you ever considered how much pollution is made in mining the material used in the catalytic converter? I do not have a degree in engineering, but I do know that rare elements are used inside of catalytic converters. I would assume it takes a lot of mining to get the materials used in catalytic converters. The mining equipment puts more pollution into the air, making the problem even worse. Now I'm not saying that we shouldn't run cats on cars, I'm sure they do a lot to help emissions. However, don't cry about 1% of enthusiast car owners that decide to run without a cat. It isn't going to end the world, NYC isn't going to be covered by an ocean. I wish everyone would calm down with this environmental stuff and realize we can't change the planet. It's going to do what it's going to do.

Glad I could make the thread interesting for you guys ;)

And to those who call me a hypocrite...I am saving one, single turbo eclipse from having a test pipe and becoming the straw that breaks the camel's back as the Earth turns into a furnace! :p

well i gotz a highflow cat... and my car still flys... I love performance... but they give expensive tickets in cali for a reason... now the no front plate law now thats dumb. :thumb:

Wooh, I haven't been here in a few months. It's really gone downhill it seems with the whining / biatching / trolling / flaming.

Anyway, I don't run a cat. It's actually better for the environment that way. WHY do you ask? Because the catalytic converter is a product of the uninformed government process making rules and regulations that don't actually help. The cat serves to restrict the flow of exhaust a reasonable amount. It reduces the efficiency of the engine in making X amount of power. If you're cruising down the highway, without a cat, you're burning less fuel than if you had a cat. If you put a car on an emissions tester with and without a cat, it will often pass just fine without a cat. It doesn't _do_ very much to help, and you end up burning more gas getting down the highway anyway. So it sucks. Ignorant environmentalists don't want to hear this, and plug their ears shouting "nah nah nah, I dont' hear you" when you try to tell them this, and insist that they are correct, and incapable of making mistakes.

Also, to all of you in this forum bitching about the environment. Do you all recycle? Do you all have low-flow toilets, and shower heads? Do you all pick up garbage on the side of the road? Do you help out in every way you can? No? Then STFU. I recycle, I pick up trash in my neighborhood, I've convinced a couple of my friends to stop littering, and be more careful with their trash, I use very little electricity and water, I'm planning on converting a DSM to electric power when I can afford it, and I don't run a cat.

haha this is by far the funniest thread I have seen...3 full pages of senseless debate....I wonder how far this thread will go!? LOL   :thumb:

oh and I saw The Day After Tomorrow yesterday...way awesome special effects...wish they would've had that movie when i was in science class...i would've actually stayed awake for once! oh and the homeless guy was cool too

i think i'm going to water my yard with this old motor oil i have had sitting around for a while. my friend watered his yard not too long ago with oil except only he did it unintentionally. he had like 5, 5 gallon buckets of oil in his shed and then it flooded one day and the next time we checked the buckets were empty. it made his yard look all tight like a chamelion paint job.

Hmm. Please elaborate.

And intelligent people (not to be confused with ignorant environmentalists!) understand what a catalytic converter does, the fact that the AMOUNT of fuel consumed is not at issue (while the massive amounts of dangerous greenhouse gasses emitted IS the issue), and that the government did not randomly invent a metal and ceramic box to bolt onto every production car in the nation just for their own amusement.

Please understand wtf you are talking about before you stun us with your mature depictions of "ignorant environmentalists...shouting nah nah nah."

I do not consider myself an environmentalist. But an intelligent and considerate person? Yes. Let's see if we can drag this thread on a little further...

If the performance gains are verifiable, I understand running without a cat at the track. The greenhouse gasses emitted during your 4 runs at the track or whatever are not going to do much harm. But an entire (and growing) community of performance automotive enthusiasts removing their cats for daily driving is stupid and selfish.

Watch Penn and Tellers Bull Shit some time go to showtimes web site :thumb: , They proved that recycling does not do any good and that it is just a state of mind to make you feel better. Any ways The process of remanufacturing recycled items creates more pollution than it takes to manufacture new products and put them in a land fill. Recycling also costs a lot more Tax Payers Dollars. There are parks now that used to be landfills. They just covered everything up, Almost everything decomposes after time and when it does it creates methane gas which they are using as a resource

IDK how sheltered you are but i know for one thing there is 43 gas gussling 4 inch straight pipe race cars every weekend on the TV. If it is thta big of a deal i think the gov would have done something to them???

Um...I think the government thinks like I do in this case. Please read my posts before inserting foot in mouth :shhh:

Well me and my family use Aquanet hairspray daily, I mow the grass twice a week, have camp fires just about everyweekend (which would mean trees are being cut down), Use a cell phone everyday, and.............Oh yes I run 3" straight pipe on my daily driven Ozone eating DSM.

Come on there are more important things than worrying about this no cat issue ie WAR IN IRAQ

I think someone was refering to NASCAR and your idiotic comment was made JoeMatthews well lets see we could continue and say I think every freakin city/town has a drag strip somewhere close by and the numerous cars that show up weekly with NO CATS and numerous other Non Emission passing things

After watching Fast and furious did you think you could actually peel out in 4th gear when you hit the NOS..............hmmmmm........I know some people that did! :D

:thumbdown Do yourself a favor go to the movies this weekend and watch Harry Potter maybe youll come back and tell us that there is a 2 headed dog guarding the entrance to the Stone

I'M GETTING THE FEELING THAT JOE LIVES IN A "GREEN" HOUSE, SINCE THAT'S ALL HE TALKS ABOUT, AND IT's EFFECT.

Gentlemen, this is the "effect" that living in a greenhouse will give you, thus giving you name "the greenhouse effect". Making you a born-breed idiot who will live a life ranting about nothing more than this supposed "green-house" and it's effects. Oh and VENUS!!! CAn't forget about that planet that is so much of a concern for us people on earth.

You should paint that house blue or something and talk about saving whales or dolphins.

Oh, and since when is our exhaust fumes called greenhouse gases. Just cuz you live in a muffler that is painted green and you call it a house doesn't mean that they are now "greenhouse gases".

This is funny chit!!! WOOHOO!

another thought...

methane gas isn't good for the environment is it? Should we all have catalytic corks in our a$$es so we can save the ozone since billions of people will emit these gases from their a$$es at least a few times a day.

Don't know about you guys, but I'd fail emissions thanks to Taco Bell!!!!
OMG

I am in no way a tree hugging hippy and could careless if the world ended. But I will add my 2 pennies.

The cat serves to restrict the flow of exhaust a reasonable amount. It reduces the efficiency of the engine in making X amount of power. Ignorant environmentalists don't want to hear this, and plug their ears shouting "nah nah nah, I dont' hear you" when you try to tell them this, and insist that they are correct, and incapable of making mistakes.

I have never heard/read someone being so blatently wrong. You think the catalytic converter is there ONLY as a restriction? To say it's not a restriction would be wrong because ya sure it is, especially if your looking for performance. However, it's main purpose is to burn the unburnt gases that did not get burnt during the combustion process. The material in it, which I can't remember what, acts as a catalyst in order for the reaction(burning the rest of the unburnt gases) to occur. I'm quite sure the "uninformed" government knows what they are doing.

If you're cruising down the highway, without a cat, you're burning less fuel than if you had a cat.

...and how do you figure this?

If you put a car on an emissions tester with and without a cat, it will often pass just fine without a cat.

I'm NOT going to say it's impossible but a overwhelming majority...hell no your not going to pass emissions. Your HC(Hydro Carbon) & CO(Carbon Monoxide) will be too high.

Ignorant environmentalists don't want to hear this, and plug their ears shouting "nah nah nah, I dont' hear you" when you try to tell them this, and insist that they are correct, and incapable of making mistakes.

Not trying to defend environmentalist or anything cause I could careless about them or the slow process of killing the environment because we don't live that long so who gives a shit. There is a reason why environmentalist bi*** and whine and got their way with having cars go through emission testings. This is because whenever the Stoichiometric(sp?)Ratio aka 14.7 part air and 1 part C8H15(gasoline) is not at that ratio, you get an incomplete burn which then gives you CO and HC. The catalytic converter's job is to burn as much of that unburnt gas as possible. Oh btw....CO is poisonous and will KILL YOU. HC is very bad for the trees(yea that includes your marijuanna trees too). So saying that running without a cat, which again tries to finish burning CO and HC and turn them into CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), which is good for the trees who then give us back Oxygen, and turn the HC into H2O, is ignorant and uniformed.

For the previous posts explaining that CO2 is bad for the Ozone or whatever....I have no clue...If it is....who cares....You and I will be dead before anything even happens to the ozone or atmosphere or whatever the hell you were complaining about. For now...all that's important is that trees need CO2 and in return turn it into O2...OXYGEN...YUMMY...

Anyways....I'd prefer to run a HF Cat because it will reduce the restriction over the stock cat, but still will do what any cat does...attempt to burn what unburnt gases are left. Which should allow you to pass emissions.

OH BTW...running without a cat is illegal. But shit do what you want...In the end it's your choice.

My head hurts... :dsm:
