ok, I searched but couldnt find my exact problem....first background...I do not have a DSM, but you guys know a lot about turbos and turbo problems, so here goes...I have a 98 Dodge Neon with a fully built 2.4 swap at 8.5:1 compression(similar to the 420a) I am running a mitsu 20g(or rather a hahn super20g, same thing except for the flange) but I cant boost in 1st, right now I max out at 7 psi in the other gears, using a fmic with solid ic piping with no leaks, any ideas?

Check these items and make sure they are operational:

- Is the 20G externally or internally gated? check the operation of the wastegate flapper.

- What boost controller do you have Manual or Electronic? Make sure the hoses are correctly connected.

its internally gated, I checked the wastegate operation....it seems to be working fine(its supposed to be a 15psi wastegate, but its never boosted more than 7psi, I think its just a 7psi wastegate myself, no boost controller as of yet, still working out the bugs in the engine, to be fair I think it may be the computer as well, trying to pull timing since the computer is made for NA and I'm using a MAP clamp, it may pull timing as the MAP voltage approaches 5v thinking the engine has to be revving really high to reach that type of pressure, but it still doesnt explain why the other gears boost fine(shouldnt say fine, but adequate), I tried disconnecting the wastegate from the intake housing of the turbo, it did boost in first then...at 5500+ rpm erratically from 7-10psi (I'm assuming it was erratic because of the vacuum leak caused by the disconnected hose)

a wastegate opens at whatever the preset spring load is....in this case I was told when I bought the kit that it has a 15 PSI wastegate, therefore....the turbo is going to push out 15psi before the wastegate opens....no boost controller needed for that, however I think they lied to me since I never have been able to boost more than 7 psi, and standard 16gs come with a 7 psi gate, doesnt really concern me though since when I get ready to turn up the boost all I have to do is add a boost controller

just a quick tip, the hahn super seriese turbos have a 10 cm turbine housing compared to the 7 cm on a mitsu 20g, and the bearings are also differant.

my brothers spring came set at 8 psi, and for you not getting boost in first gear.

do you have a big exhaust? do you have any exhaust leaks before the turbo?

my brothers didn't spool up on his talon till about 4k rpm in first gear, and that was on a 3 inch exhaust.

i am thinking that it might be to big and your exhaust is to small maybe to spool it in first gear and also maybe you have and exhaust leak.

what rpm does it hit 7 psi in 2nd gear?

another thing, i remembered my brothers did exactly what yours is doing, right when he got it. he blew out the brand new gasket the first time he hit boost, the gaskets the give you between the manifold the adapter plates and the turbo suck

yes, I have a full 3" exhaust....I thought it might be a lower sized spring than they told me....right now my boost gauge is running off an accesory port on the power brake booster so I'm not expecting the most accurate boost reading, but it still should be within a couple lbs, I dont think I have any exaust leaks(not before the turbo anyway and its not too likely after either) the gasket I got for the turbo to manifold is a metal gasket...guess its a standard sized t3 gasket, although come to think of it last time I pulled the motor I reused the same turbo-manifold gasket...think that could be it? It hits 7 psi in 2nd around 3.5-4k usually, I think it may be a combination of problems, looks like I'm getting that semi-standalone system, and I definately need a better MAP sensor....this 1 bar sensor cant help anything(this is what you get when turbocharging a non turbo car....have to mess with fooling the computer all the time)

Josiah, call me up sometime today. I have tons of friends around here and I am pretty sure we can figure out the problem. I gave you both my numbers. Hit me up. Id love to see this thing.

Also, are you coming out to track day on the 8th? You need to bring that thing out. We are also having dyno day on the 23rd for $20 for 2 pulls with A/F read outs. Hit me up man.

hate to ressurect a dead thread, but I have since installed my standalone, and taken control of spark and fuel(stupid NA computer) but it still doesnt seem to be helping the spooling in 1st and 2nd, 1st still doesnt spool worth anything, when I get on it, it goes straight to 0 and will hang there until like 5500 RPM, then it will boost like 2 psi till redline, 2nd will boost easily enough if I get on it, 3rd, 4th, and 5th are great as always, think I should install a MBC and up the boost(or I could just make a circuit for my standalone and have an electronic boost controller....might be a better idea) and the turbo isnt too big for the motor(it is a 2.4L I am using after all and other people dont seem to have spooling problems in 1st)the only reason I am still running 6psi is because I need a new clutch and axles, oh, and by the way, I dont really appreciate my post being moved to the newbie forum just because its a non DSM question(though it is a related engine family)...its much more technical and involved than most newbie questions
