Next Test: E85 flex fuel vehicle via fuel trimming

Very good points Jay, I might actually get 10:1's depending on the cost and availability. I have to carry the block up out of the basement this week and get it to the machine shop so they car start working on it.

Does ARP make main journal botls for our cars yet? When i had the motor built the first time the machinist told me they weren't available(and i couldn't find them on any websites either) , so i did head and rods. He assured me that the factory main bolts were not torque to yield stretchy junkers but actually good bolts that would stand up to any punishment that the rest of the motor could handle.

We will see i guess. I do like teh E85, but i'm finding a lt of things i like about normal pump gas when i have to use it as well.

Well, the new 255 is holding strong :) I was pushing 28si yesterday and running 10:1 AFR's :D I started leaning it down a bit into the 11's (no longer needing meth for extra fuel is NICE).. the car was pulling incredibly hard and i was loving every minute of it.

One thing i noticed that makes a HUGE difference in my eyes is that when i went back to e85 from pump, before i ever even changed the timing back up to E85 levels the car was still making way more power in the light throttle and cruising areas compared to petrol gas. My car was feeling half blown up there for a few days in the heat, but the E85 must provide some good cooling in the combustion chamber.

One thing I'm now having problems with is i still can't make a full 30psi on my EBC ( have a 14.5lb waste-gate spring now too) and i noticed even under WOT I'm surging quite a bit WTF... I've never had to deal with this thing surging under WOT and I've tuned it at 28-29psi way back in the day when it was new.... Is this still just a case of the motor not being able to take all the air the 57 trim is dishing out or what?

EDIT: Guess i should mention.... Running at AFR's in the high 10's @ 28psi, i was seeing 84% IDC's out of the 1000cc injectors on the 57 trim turbo. I didn't get it into the high revs where IDC's become shorter periods to reach 100% but i fell safe that i now have an adequate fuel system to handle the air that i can flow :D

What rpms are you surging.

Maybe you need to play around with the cam timing with some cam gears ( I dont know what cams you run or how that could affect the way the engine digest the air in your case)

As far as not being able to reach 30psi, do you have ANY boost leaks for one?
Also, perhaps you need a stiffer waste gate spring. Im thinking more along the lines of like a 18psi spring. But perhaps you can shim it or something to gain a little stiffness.

Do you have any restrictions in your exhaust or intake that you could fathom holding you back some?
Maybe you do since your surging at WOT, perhaps your not flowing the air fast enough?

I dont know, just throwing some quick thoughts out there.

I still ned cam gears and new valve springs and retainers, so those are just dialed in straight up (as long as they were ground straight..they are DKS 272/264 combo

No boost leaks, turbo checks out just fine and i just upgraded springs so i could get 30psi. It's teh EBC being setup for a internal gate right now. As soon as i switch it over and set it up for an external i know i'll get teh boost i'm looking for

Also there are no exhaust restrictions,EDIT.. it's a 2.5'' DP straight through to a 3'' thermal R&D cat back system (no cat)

One thing that puzzles me is that i even seem to make more power on E85 during off boost and low boost driving (2-3psi max) The only thing i can think of is that teh extra volume required to make the energy is a liquid and cannot be compressed so maybe it's raising CR slightly????? just a guess, i have nothing to back it up and i use teh same timing maps for both fuels until i hit over 9-10 psi

Someone should do some tests on this, on the dyno or something with same settings and see whats the results.

Anyways I really think you should upgrade that 2.5 DP, ( or anything in your exhaust tract thats 2.5 that is.)
Even if the 2.5 section of the Dp is just the neck or, even if it only necks down to 2.5 for the flange or flex, its still restricting efforts as your exhaust only flows as good as your smallest part. ( pipeing wise.)

I know a few ppl who have gained significant HP/ Torque just from increasing a 2.5 to a 3in DP on just 16g setups. Therefore the gain would be even larger for you. Hell because I run a 3in (mandrel bend) DP, when my cutout is open Im open DP and I lay down a lot of torque, more torque than horsepower, when normally I see its the opposite on other ppls 16g 2.0 setups.
I mean 2.5 may not be a "restriction", but it may still not be letting you get every last drop of power out of your current setup, and rubbing off a little horsepower from the additional backpressure over the 3in piping. On a turbo car, the bigger the better ( Obviously within reasonable limits.)

Just my opinion though.

Im glad to see the 1000cc are working for cause thats what im going to use. Ive been running a mix of 85 and 93 with my 1000cc with just a dsmchip. I just ordered reburned dual image chip where i can run 93 the of flip of switch run e85. I will have two maps saved on the chip. Im currently seeing 11.0-11.2 on the wide band at 26psi with no knock idcs were at 59% with the 93/e85 mix. This is on my 1000cc that I have on there already just havent wanted to run straight yet but now I think my car is ready. I have the bws256 and man it pulls hard nowROFL I have turned it up to 28psi and my tial 38mm with 14.5 spring holds it fine. My chip should be here this week so we shall see. I have also bought the maf gen 2 translator with the wideband tracking and timing control . Too get it dialed in.

Get that chip in and keep us updated...the corn juice will put a smile on your face from ear to ear teh first time you're running 30 psi on gas that's less than 3 bucks a gallon and not seeing any knock :D I know it did for me .
