Hey guys,

So I have a 97 Talon TSI. Has 105,000 miles (170,000km) on the clock. Picked it up a few weeks ago, really enjoying the site and it's been helping me a ton.

I previously owned a 2006 Cobalt SS/SC seen below that I had modded quite a bit.

I loved the car, but wasn't a huge fan of FWD and wanted to go to school so anyways I sold her and bought this car for pretty cheap. I don't know much about turbos but I'm learning. I know a lot about superchargers though haha.

So moving on, I picked up a used 14b turbo with very little shaft play, new gaskets, bolts, 02 housing and j pipe for $100. I then got a Walbro 190 fuel pump, AEM EUGO wideband, AEM Tru boost boost controller and boost gauge and a dash pod for around the cluster. I'm going to see if my HPTuners software will log this (I think it will, havn't checked yet).

I've been searching around and I'm stuck on what system I should use for tuning. Would a SAFC be sufficient? What else do I need for this build? Also are 550CC injectors sufficient? I'm a pretty noob tuner. I had just gotten HPTuners as I got rid of my car. So this will end up being my compiled question/build thread. Sorry for being long winded!

EVO injectors(there 560's), EVO MAF, and a safc great setup and requires little to know tuning AND A FMIC.

Yes I believe your all good to go. Your going to need oil and coolant. Maybe some crush washers for the banjo bolts and gaskets for the oil return.

You got the big stuff covered. Let us know if you hit any more snags

Spectacular, I'll be picking up coolant, oil (also doing my oil pressure sending unit and resealing my oil pan) and new crush washers. Already have the oil return gasket. Any special coolant recommended?

I'll for sure let you guys know if I have any problems. Monday I'll have everything and I'll start taking stuff apart, I'll have 3 or 4 days next week after work to do it so hopefully I can get it running by Sunday or so.

I gotta say, this forum is ten fold better than the Cobalt forums I was previously on for the general population, everybody there was always at eachothers throats and bashing. Thanks a ton for the help guys! I'll have my knowledge worked up one day :thumb:.

If you can make 300hp with a 14b and 550cc injectors using a safc you are a god! No way in hell you get close to that with a SMIC running 550's on 91octane. Before you start doing anything get an AFPR then get a flashable ecu if dsmlink is to much money. Honestly after spending most of all of my paychecks on my car this summer I will tell you that if you are in school just keep the car how it is and enjoy driving it. If you have a 2g with a 14b that's good enough, the second you try to throw 550's in the car you are going to need a bunch of supporting mods and that ='s more $. With the smic you can push a max of 16psi that is if your not knocking like crazy on pump gas.

I'm not going for the cheapest route possible here, regardless of if I'm in school I still have to do something for entertainment haha. If I can get it to keep up to my old car I'll be happy, I appreciate the input though.

Well then get ready to go into debt, I have some denso 720's I will sell to you for $140 shipped with new lower seals. Your also gonna need a AFPR and forget the safc and just get dsmlink then, get lite if you have to. And you might as well get a walbro 255 instead of the 190 since they are the same price on ebay.

Whats with you an debt? I'm not anywhere close to being broke. I passed on the 255 to avoid the FPR. Your going from one end of the spectrum to the other now. Why get a 255 and FPR and 720's and DSMlink if I don't need to for a mild build. I already have a logger anyway. If I go past an SAFC the Evo ECU seems like a better idea anyway.

I'm not looking for astronomical numbers, just a fun car. :thumb:.

^^Specially if you're using it in majority for street driving, you don't need 400+ you need something quick off the line and with a quick spool to be fun. A "nervous" car as I call them. Main reason why I went with the rare big SMIC, just enough to get me what I want out of my small 16g :D. The 14b and supporting mods can definitely give you that, and the 14b is one sturdy little turbo. Glad to see you aren't broke...I am :p

Exactly, which SMIC do you have?

Also picking up my parts tomorrow from the border and I'll start tearing her down. I'm thinking I'm going to do the timing belt at the same time and I also need to reseal my oil pan. I might just pull the engine out of the car.

Pics to come!

I run a big Dejon Super SMIC, thicker and larger core than stock

The first one on the pic is the one I have (with the oem for comparison) the second is a Hahn SMIC, 3rd another Dejon, and lastly the ADFX SMIC just in case you want to go that route, that's what they look like. There's also a Bullseye SMIC they made a while back, don't have a pic of that one. They stopped making them, reason why they are now rare.

Thanks for the pics bud.

So, PROGRESS over the last two days! Car is up on stands, T-25 is off. The amount coolant that came out of the return line was ungodly haha. Couple of the bolts broke on the manifold to turbo, the stud wasn't too bad. Penetrating oil is as usual a great helping hand.

The good:

- T25 is off
- Found my oil leak and fixed it
- Car is getting new coolant
- Learning a lot about turbo's work

The bad (well, not so bad):

- Taking forever (which isn't so bad. Patience is key :thumb:)
- The oil feed line from the head is confusing me. I can't seem to find which hole it goes to. I've got it down (to what I can find) being one of the two in the head on the passengers side just under the valve cover?
- Figuring where to bend the water lines/how to hook them up has got be confused too. When I look more at it I should get it though.

The actual bad:

- My exhaust sucks! Downpipe welded to test pipe welded to crush bent exhaust into magnaflow "loud as hell" muffler. Not sure where I'm going to go with this yet.

Overall, I'm having a good time. My garage floor is covered with coolant though :ohdamn:. I had my drain pan ready and the coolant came out of the house, hit the frame and went everywhere.

So after the 14b is in I need to:

- Tap the J Pipe for my boost controller
- Install fuel pump
- Install wideband (Where do you guys put the wideband bung)
- Install boost controller
- Install cluster gauge pod

(I'm going to have more questions... haha).

help
I have a 1993 eclipse with a jdm 4g67 motor and its time to change the timing belt and since that motor was never sold in USA parts are a problem. The home work i've done all points to 1993 hyundai elantra would be the same parts. Can any one out there help....

I'm pretty sure it's called "HDR" photography, a friend (with the yellow cobalt in the following photos) was the master photographer haha.

I sent him a text about what camera it was, in my next update I'll make a note of it. Here are some more photos of the same thing.

Glad you like the photos though :)

FYI it's a Canon XSI.

So more progress today, if anyone is lurking I have a couple questions throughout.

Got my new oil pressure sending unit in, along with getting the oil feed line routed and plugging the old one and sealing them with teflon tape so it shouldn't leak again. The old oil feed line appeared to be cross threaded and only in two turns (no wonder it leaked). From the looks of it the turbo has been off this car for some reason before. The oil return pipe was barely finger tight and one of the bolts was broken on the turbo manifold when I removed it yesterday.

I also took the 02 housing off my T25 so I can put it onto the 14B instead of using the 1g one. I picked up new crush washers and some hose to replace the old ones for the water lines too.

I then ported my 14b some more, working on getting it gasket matched. Coming along pretty good and the slight crack that was in the manifold is slowy disappearing :thumb:. Bad news is I found a couple small cracks around the wastegate. So that sucks. How far into the exhaust housing do you recommend removing material? I've got that "ring" thing removed. Is porting the 02 housing or anything worth it?

Lastly I kinda jumped around a bit and did some minor stuff. Cleaned my K&N filter, pulled off the bezel around my gauge cluster and checked to see if my gauges would fit. (Thankfully they do, it's a tight fit in the gaugle cluster bezel pod. Glowshift gauges won't fit without modification). Im just looking for where to route my gauges. I read about the wiring harness hole in the firewall behind the battery so I'll check there first I think.

If anyone has any tips/tricks/things I may encounter soon let me know.

I still need to install my fuel pump tomorrow and pick up oil/filter and coolant.

If you want to port your turbine housing, here are a couple good sources for info: here and here.

Porting it any more than a gasket match won't make a big difference but if you find you have boost creep afterwards, then you'll most likely have to. Your putting the 2g O2 housing on so I don't think you will creep.

Even with your mild mods things will start to add up, I'm not kidding so settle down. Let's just say I told you so when you get to that point. Oh look at that, your gonna replace your Timing belt and even pull the engine, well that's gonna cost more, what's next?

And even if you put a 190 pump in you should have an AFPR, you would be stupid not to when you can find a used one with lines for $150. Or you can just run a little rich all the time and waste fuel, your choice. And as for safc's it's easier to adjust with an ECU so get the evo ecu if you wan't but you would be wasting you $ on an SAFC when you could spend $100 and get an ecu.

And put the WB bung no further then a couple feet away from the turbo, right after the bend in the DP is good.

^ Whatever man, I won't argue with you.

On a more on track note. Got the car all back together, was setting up my AEM tru boost gauge which was going well. Car was pulling great, idle was good. I think I'm leaking something though, I havn't got anything on the floor but my downpipe has stuff on it and lightly smoked. I think it may be coolant from the line on the back so I'll check.

But that will have to wait because my IC pipe exploded haha. Anyways, gotta find a new pipe now. Maybe hard piping. Then get her back on the road again.

I've been watching your progress. Looks great! What psi were you at when you blew the IC pipe?

And like you said, the smoke is probably just spilled oil or coolant burning off.

And thanks for the picture info :thumb:

Around 14 I'd say. My gauge said it spiked to 15PSI but it went at 14PSI @ around 5500RPM. It just fell on it's face and I figured I blew a charge pipe off but instead actually blew the pipe :thumb:.

Thanks for the compliments and no problem about the info, anytime. I like the effect myself too.

Back from the dead!

I started my car for the first time since the 4th! Got a FMIC on it now. Was a good feeling, just need to cut my bumper and put it back on and put in fuel pump now :).
