I just bought a 90 gst. The turbo is bad. I am new to them and would like info on them. What brand is good what one is bad and boost to hp

You have a lot of reading to do, but for these cars, anything MHI is always a good opition. If you don't have any supporting mods, I'd go with a 14b. A stock replacement then after the supporting mods are done upgrade to a bigger turbo. Do it in the right steps or don't do it

It's a shell I plan to build the car. I want to build a quick car but don't need anything that runs in the 9s. I know motors just new to turbos

Best way to pick a turbo (besides stock as listed above) is figure out how much power you want and buy accordingly. I'm old school, so I do everything in lbs/min. Each 1 lb/min correlates to roughly 10 hp at the crank. So, pick a power level you want (or 1/4 mile time and convert to hp) and go from there.

However, that will require lots of modification and therefore it will be expensive and/or time consuming. You can go budget build, but it's better to just get the car running with stock parts (possibly with just whatever's on it) and fix any issues before going crazy hunting for power.

Remember too, the bigger turbo you decide to go, the more lag you'll have trying to spool it. Maybe throw a stroker in there if you're trying to get a larger size turbo? It should help you spool up faster

Then you must gotta get yourself a jacks or tre or tmz built trans to go with it! If it's a shell then OP will need one anyways.

Hmm, I didn't know that. Thanks, makes me glad I decided against a stroker myself! I was concerned about the reliability of them in a dd (which is what my talon is used for) rather than a track car or project like what OPs car is sounding like.

This whole thread scares me a bit, he asks for a good turbo recommendation and we start talking about 2.3 strokers, bringing up their reliability will cause this thread to spiral out of control..

That being said.. you mentioned the turbo is bad but you have not mentioned what you plan to do with the car. daily driver? weekend toy? drag car? What current modifications are done to it? There are a lot of variables in choosing a turbo.. If you want to daily it you need to get all the supporting mods and then just get one of the MHI 16g variant turbos, those are hands down the best "street/daily" turbo's that exist for our platform because they're a great balance of power/response and it will bolt right into a stock 1g.
