Hey guys I’ve been trying to find a AWD DSM for years and I finally did after many attempts!

I’m kinda scared to take this thing out without a professional tune and some good advice! I bought a 97 Talon TSi with a 1g long-block. Here is all the mods in the picture from who I bought it from was running 20-50 as they’re only 200 miles on the rebuilt engine supposedly.

I’m in north NJ and I do want to take it out here and there in the winter if it is somewhat nice out. What would you guys recommend to change the oil to? It can get kinda cold over here.

I’m looking for a very good tuner that I can use for a build like this that you guys trust in? It does need a bit of work, rear axles, brakes, paint, and etc but I’m not sure if I want to start rebuilding this car till I can trust the engine running safer then it is now.

Tuner would depend what ECU you have. You should mentioned about that to find one quickly. As for the oil, you need to know what bearing clearance the engine has to determine what oil would be the best for you. So you should ask the previous owner how much bearing clearance he put when he rebuilt.
This is just my opinion, so no need to listen if you don't want to. This depends how you are wanting on the car but in case if you are planning to have a lot of fun in the city like a daily driven car, if I were you I would replace the 280 cam set with something milder to have more fun on the streets. For me if I don't see boost below 5000rpm won't be fun to drive in the city at all. Or I may go with a bigger turbo and injectors if I would want to keep the cams.

Also the air controller valve was deleted when I went to check the oil you can smell a bit of gas he said they don’t work well. would you suggest putting something else on the car to make it start without screwing with the throttle ? it getting too much fuel in there also idk if it’s from start up or just how rich it’s running ?

Do you mean ECMLink? If so, you can find a good tuner for you here.

Hard to tell what issue you have. Mostly you have multiple issues which is common when you buy a modified DSM. Please make your car profile and upload pics and videos as much as you can. That will help us a lot to see the situation. A pic is worth a thousand words.

There’s a learning curve with everything. The main thing is to check everything over and get it tuned.
I second the cams are too big for the 68HTA. I wouldn’t put anything past 272’s with mine because the power band wouldn’t make sense any bigger then that. I’d also change the oil and buy sets of plugs to have.

Yes ecm link !LOL I’m use to my last project that was a gto ah easy N.A power but I definitely missed the good old jdm boost! I did own a vr4 when I was a kid but wasn’t able to figure things out and replace much myself then. But would love to show pics later on plans and goals! And yeah I am going to change the cams didn’t like high rpm boost. Wondering I was going to go 10 -40 for where I live ? Or would you put anything special in it? Synthetic or not? Thanks for the input guys i appreciate it I’m just trying to fix this timing cover now thats all chewed up from it being a 1g longblock in a 2g wasn’t sure if it was installed wrong but definitely don’t like the way its bolted up to the engine. It was making the power steering belt rub on it. I’m debating on pulling the engine or just leaving this motor mount off for now and see if I can do something about that
