New Owner: Anything I should know? What should I mod first? [merged]

Hello to everbody in this forum. I'm new to all of this so from time to time I may ask a foolish question or two so bear with me. I just recently purchased a 1991 Talon TSi Turbo FWD for $7,600.00 Canadian and the Car was in MINT condition, never winter driven, always stored indoors, 100,000 kms., one owner (A Doctor) who always did the regular maintenance and anything else that needed to be done, and always a couple of good coats of Mother's Wax on her. She is in Pristine condition on the inside as well as under the hood, Pictures will follow soon so you can see for youself. What do you think? Also, I plan on doing some modifications, nothing outrageous but enough to put her around 250 HP. I'm thinking a mechanical boost gauge mounted on a single A Pillar Pod, a K & N High FLow Air Filter System to replace the whole stock can filter that is there now, and a new blow-off valve...Does this sound reasonable? That would do it for mods under the hood for now. The rest would be looks items like 17" Sniper Rims, and a neon purple ground effect kit.

Let's here those comments...I'm new to this stuff so all advise and help would be appreciated.

well what i would probaly do is install a remote starter. i had no choice, i had to get a automatic. which really sucks , :thumbdown but i will have to deal with it.i would also like to know which oil is better , syn or regular oil. this car is gonna be my daily driver. at what mileage should i make my oil change

You always have a choice, even if it means waiting a bit longer/traveling further to get what you want. Alot of people go with pure synthetic, don't cheap out on oil. Go with Royal Purple, or Amsoil.

So i was debating on a custom GT30R setup for my '03 Jetta 1.8t or buying a project car.


For a while I thought an old GTI w/ a 1.8t would be bad ass, but I keep having tuning issues w/ my 1.8t Drive-by-wire car.


There are a few DSM's around that are really quick. I know all the guys and have been fighting the urge to change my allegience over to the DSM's, not because I don't like them, just because I don't know them.

Anyway, a friend of mine found a pretty clean car in need of a head, thanks to a cam issue, the head needs replacing and i bought the car from a guy who wanted to fix it but doesn't have the time and doesn't know anything about foreign cars.


I picked up a white on black 1990 Talon TSI, for $750. It needs a head but there's a newly done head included w/ the car. it needs some small things I've already found locally and my only real issue is the hood looks like ass.


anyway, I just wanted to share because I'm really excited about this car. I'm calling it project 350 for $3500. I want 350 awhp out of it for $3500 and i think I'm off to a good start.

well, 350 + a 100 or 150 shot of the sauce. I'm a nitrous fiend. if I get more, I'll be happy, but I think 350 w/ my budget is a good starting point for a 1 g dsm.

. actually, I kinda bought it as motivation to take the spray off of my jetta. I've been goin through 10lb bottles like a college kid goes through redbull on finals week.


but yeah, the DSM takes Nitrous better than the jetta.

Alrighty as you see my first post about my car. The maintanence is now complete. The car is now running at optimal condition. Now it's time to mod my car and hopefully have some fun with it. Now can someone give me some good listing of parts I should buy to mod my car in the 1st stage tech guide. They don't really state which parts are good and bad so I can really tell. I'm coming from a Acura/Honda perspective so bare with me not knowing which is one of the best parts for a DSM thanks.

May I ask, what maintenance has been performed and when?

Plugs, wires, fuel filter, timing belt (and other timing components) water pump? Change the gear oil in the transmission?

Compression check?

As far as mods go:

1. Boost gauge

2. Manual boost controller

3. Open air filter/cold air intake

4. Exhaust

5. Datalogger

6. Upgrade fuel components and get something to tune with (SAFC, DSM Link)

7. Upgrade turbo if needed

How many miles on your car? Is it original engine and tranny?

Is it the original Turbo?

What Acuras and Honda have you owned previously? Do you still own any of those? What prompted you to go with a DSM?

what i think he's asking is like what brand name to get, because he read the parts already in the tech guide.

i'll use spooling4ever list

boost gauge - autometer will do. if you want to spend a bit more you can get greddy, apexi, defi

mbc - hallman & joe p are two great mbc

air filter - the best filter you can get is K&N FIPK

exhaust - is usually your choice. or you can get a muffler of your choice apexi N1, greedy, thermal. then just go to a exhaust shop and get 3in SS mandrel bent piping. all i would say is get 3in so you don't have to upgrade later from a 2.5

for the fuel mods, tuning and logging, and turbo upgrade i would say it's all dependent on your goals. for example if you choose 750's trying to tune them on afc would be a hassle. so what are your goals for your car??

My goal is to run at least a 13.5 1/4 mile after finishing upgrading the stage one section. If I can run faster than that than that'll also be a plus in my book. But to make it practical I wish to run at least 13.5 or lower.

i recently bought a 96 talon tsi awd from a friend and was told that it had an after market intercooler and bov. I'm looking for a semi inexpensive way to get some more power but i don't know what the car can handle and if i need some more parts before upgrading to a bigger turbo and which would be the best one to get the most power with the fewest other upgrades from what i already have.

You need to find out more information on your car. Whether it has injectors, fuel pump, FPR, how is the MAF set up? Is it a stock MAF or a MAFT?
Is the exhaust stock?
Whats the maintenance like? Is it up to date? Are you sure?
Is the stock clutch and tranny still in?

Then you need to figure out what you're lookin' to get. 300 whp, 400whp, autocross demi-god...

Research first before you upgrade.

i don't know what a MAF or MAFT is so? but i did find out that it has an upgraded clutch and all the fluids in the man tranny and engine have ben replaced. the exhaust is half and half. up to the cat it is stock but i have a test pipe for the cat and the muffler is new..ish. i just want to get around 300hp. the intake has a kN filter and i read some where that the bov needs to be vented some where, so where is it suposed to be vented to, it loks like it is venting to the atmoshpere, but i have NO experience with turbo cars

I just wanted to formally introduce myself to the board. I've been lurking for a few weeks but reluctant to post as I hadn't gotten my hands to dirty with my car. I was lucky to have picked up a great 95 TSi from a member of the forum and all I can say about the car is: awesome.
I've tried to make my profile as accurate as possible (although with my recent suspension work and some new gauges it's already obsolete) and I need to get pictures up too-but I wanted to say hello and comment that this forum has turned out to be an incredible resource-I also really like the structure and climate of it. The preference for the proper use of the English language is a bonus as well.
I've had other 'cult' vehicles before; most notably a 91 300ZX slicktop and my beloved 94 Land Rover Discovery but the DSM is truly unique and I'm very happy to have one now.

Hi my name is Gillian, and I just recently bought a 1990 eagle talon TSI AWD. It is in very good condition, and only has 98,000 miles on it. I have needed a car for a while now, and my boyfriend convinced me that this was the one. He is very into cars, and knows so much about them. I know very little, but have been reading up on VFaq to help me out. If someone could just give me some pretty basic information about under the hood of the car and other basic mods that I should do, I would greatly appreciate it!

Welcome, to the site. This is one of the best forums on line, no doubt about it. There's tons of useful information on here. The biggest thing everyone is going to tell you is to use the search button and make sure that you search for answers before asking questions. Once you are here for a while you will see which questions get asked a dozen times a day. (This is one of them.) Anyways there are a bunch of good threads in the dsm faq page. There is a lot of useful information on what is under the hood, including a picture where you can click on the engine and it will tell you what part it is and its function.

Also for modding here is a guide to go buy, you can follow it like a recipe for speed.


Hope these point you in the right direction, you ave chosen an awesome car, hope you have fun with it.
