I want to get a second gen eclipse but I want to put in a 1g engine. So, I want to know if I should buy a 1st gen gsx and get a 2nd gen shell or should I buy a 2nd gen and swap the engine??

its opinion, i am right now replacing the bottom end of my block, the 7 bolt. im not goin with the crowd with swaping it with a 6 bolt becease of crankwalk, what crankwalk after i replace the bottom end. And my the way crankwalk is rare. the rods are stronger in a 1g but its cheaper to buy a better set for a 2g, than just swaping engines.

I would buy a car first, then a back up car, because things usually don't go perfect you do something :) So get a DD like a $500 to get you to the parts store while you get your gsx running :)

Well if you want a 2G, then you need to find a good 2G to start with because there is more to a vehicle than just the engine swap. You need to have a solid body/frame, interior, brakes, wheels, accessories, suspension, transmission, transfer case, etc, etc - which are all things that won't do you much good to pull from the 1G.

The engine swap itself, should you end up going that far, is not as big of a deal as finding a good car to start with, so there is no need to buy an entire 1G just to get the engine.

Good luck

Not to argue, but it's actually not opinion. I will search to see if I can find the data to back it up, but the 6-bolt block is stronger than the 7-bolt. It can handle more horsepower. There is a wiseman (whose name I currently forget) who usually chimes in at this point in the conversation and offers all the data but I'll see if I can find it and link to it.

Edit: Everything you want to know about the engines: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/4626-6-bolt-vs-7-bolt-merged-6bolt-7bolt-6-bolt-7-bolt-six-bolt-seven-bolt.html

And to answer the original question: I would get the 2nd gen and swap in a six bolt. It seems like it would be easier to make sure you have everything than trying to take inventory on a shell and buying parts to get it running before you even get to the engine.

I personally won't do the swap, it's not a cheap simple "drop the engine in" swap. And then you WILL have a CEL on, which if you do not have any type of inspection I guess it wouldn't matter, but if you do............FAIL............ Crankwalk is very uncommon but if it worries you, rebuild the bottom end and continue on. With the money you'd save from not doing the 6-bolt swap you could get forged rods anyway. Just my .02.

:)

So... after falling off... I found a 99 gsx shell for cheap!! it only has 60k miles on the tranny, and I know the guy, so now its time to go hunting for a engine...
