I recently bought a 1990 Eclipse GS-Turbo 155k Miles for $1200... Knowingly that i would be doing some work under the hood.

The interior and exterior are in excellent condition for being 20 years old in wisconsin, only a few problems. Under body is excellent, transmission and clutch are solid and strong...

The major problem is under the hood... the original 2.0 was replaced with a 2.3 stroker at around 75k od miles. The 2.3 has about 80k miles on it... just received a new head gasket as well.

There is oil all over the place and i am degreasing what seems like everything. It's starting to look like brilliant shiny red engine bay.

The day I had bought the car the owner warned me of it dying at idle.. and it did, often. He said it was probably a vacuum leak... and that it needed little work and tuning to get it running correctly again. His word seemed solid, and I know what I was getting into buying this car.

When the car was accelerating normally it didn't sputter or want to die. It was only at idle that it would start to dip up and down in rpms and eventually die. I drove it home 100 miles from greenbay to milwaukee as gently as possible.

The car was not running well after i returned to my neighborhood, the turbo was not spooling and the car was now running very rough and choppy. the boost gauge now bounces randomly every other second from negative reading to 1 psi, no longer sits at 0. When acellerated it makes it to 1 psi tops. The engine has little power now, not drivable. haha. No oil leaks from engine on the good side.

My first idea was to clean the ever living shit out of the engine compartment... Which i have started doing and wow it looks much better.

I noticed a few things that were removed as well on a positive side...
Powersteering pump was gone
ABS is gone...

Negative side...
For whatever reason he had removed the air filter which disturbed me a bit. Recirculating hose from intake to bov removed also... doesn't look good to me haha. I will be putting the original intake back together.

What I want to do is eliminate as much as possible and create room. O2 dump, wiper fluid, relocate battery, fuse, wires. and other parts... Removing all emissions. eliminating unnecessary parts before replacing parts.

Here is the pics I took from when I first got it home (yea its a mess haha), i have others from after I cleaned it up a bit that I will post tomorrow.

another thing that is really messed up is the timing belt cover... apparently someone left a tool on the cover and when they closed hood it bent the cover into the belt... WTF!! So they "Cut" the cover off.

I am wondering if I should just have the engine pulled.

there is no recirculation hose. the car is sucking in unmetered are and dumping metered air between shifts when in boost. the car will run like shit at idle and run lean while driving. try installing the recirculation hose. that may fix the idle issue in itself

went to a few auto stores and no one has a hose big enough to fit the recirculating inlet and outlet... WTF. Is the size is 1 1/4 inch?

Also I am currently removing and cleaning at the moment... Solenoids are gone, vacuums will be blocked off... egr will be blocked off when part comes in, PCV is being rerouted to a catch can.... battery is in trunk not hooked up and i am waiting on the non cruise control throttle cable...

I'll find out soon if the valve cover is bad or just needs a new gasket.... biggest mess seems to be from oil out of the valve cover.

A question i do have is about gasket sealing... I
m trying to verify what iv heard and read. iv heard using sealant is not a good choice unless there is bad areas on the cover or block, also... i read a thin layer of wheel bearing grease is good to use on the manifold to turbo inlet gasket. My question is about the exhaust manifold to block gasket... what is the best method for installing that gasket?

Take that short section of pipe that the BOV is on with you to a hardware store and find some hose to fit it. (Or you can try your luck at the auto parts store with random radiator hoses.) Either way, it will be a 'custom' job but it will work.

Put an air filter on that MAF! Slap the previous owner; I'm sure the rest of his blunders will not be as obvious...

As far as those gaskets go, I do not recommend any sealant. Start with good gaskets and you shouldn't have a problem :thumb: Replace that missing turbo bolt while you're in there, too.

Nice find the body look clean, you should replace the gasket, recirculate the blow off valve, and do a boost leak test.
