Just bought a 90 tsi awd 5 speed. There is no second gear, not a surprise to me.
my first question is
1.The flywheel cover is missing and i can see on the flywheel lip what looks like it has been rubbing but it is not all the way around. Normal? or should i worry about it?

2.It has solid motor mounts, would this make the car vibrate like crazy when you drive it?

3.Can anyone help out with stock engine pictures? This bay is a mess.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and Im sure i will have a ton more. Thanks

the shiny part of the flywheel. Is that normal, it looks like a rotor that was destroyed by worn out brake pads.

also the rest of the engine bay is torn up. i want to clean it up a little. get wires intact, new intake, exhaust heat shield,etc...

its said to have a new clutch. it doesnt sound like it is rubbin when you turn the engine by hand. but when you start the car the starter sounds a little funny. i also need to get the power steering together. the rack is looped together and it has no pump, hoses or resevoir

and how about the battery tray or lack there of?

ok in that case try this... remove your fuel pump fuse and crank the car... when you crank it listen to the noise it makes... it should be a equal amount of noise it should be doing or unless its making a metal to metal noise getting louder and lower with the motor turning..

if there's a way to record the noise then it would be really helpful

its not rubbing i crawled under while it was running and heard nothing. I would still like to see what a stock engine bay looks like.

well minus the battery.. this is pretty much what the stock engine bay looks like

btw.. nice pick for only $700

What do you mean? It looks the same inone of the other pictures.

Yes your driver's side motor mount was cut in half. So was one of the guys who supposedly posted a picture of a "stock engine bay". It is alright, it's not going to hurt anything so I wouldn't worry about it.

3.Can anyone help out with stock engine pictures? This bay is a mess.

Check out this website, Virtual Tour of the DSM Engine Bay - 1G, it is a stock engine bay and you can click on every part and it will tell you all about it. It is very helpful.

i also need to get the power steering together. the rack is looped together and it has no pump, hoses or resevoir

and how about the battery tray or lack there of?

Your power steering has been disabled. This is a somewhat common thing, rather then converting to a manual steering rack you can loop the lines together and then remove the belt and power steering pump. It cleans up your engine bay and removes weight and the trade off is that its a little bit harder to steer at low speeds. You can get parts from a junkyard and try to convert it back or just leave it as it is.

You battery mount has also been removed so that the battery sits out of sight. This is a somewhat common modification as well. However it should be bolted down somehow, if not the you need to fix it, either fabricate a way to hold it down or get a factory battery mount from a junkyard.

Hope this helps!

Clean car for the most part on the outside by the looks of it and it looks like you don't have too many problems, for 700 bucks not bad at all.

What mods are all done? I'm kinda lazy to keep clicking around to check.[/QUOTE]

Not too many problems at all, just headliner and some other interior, but the biggie is no second gear.
The only mod i know of right now is a frankenstein 3 inch exhast, and a toggle switch for the fans. The exhaust has a smaller flex pipe that is stepped up to a 3 inch by about 2 or 3 pipes. Just ugly work.

Apparently the car had a big power motor in it that blew up and then the original or similar (not positive) was put back in.
