Here is a dumb question but i couldn't find an answer to it. I have a 1996 GSX with Garette T28 installed. I am planning to get the car to about 330HP and then stop on that point, or i will simply kill my self on the road. I know that T28 is rated at 330-340 HP max and i wonder if i will need an FMIC for such a small turbo ? Do you think my stock Smic will handle the job ?

If in case you say that i will need a better cooling system. What would you suggest ? SMIC or FMIC.
I really prefer Smic due to fact that i like the reinforcement bar too much. But really, what would you suggest ?

I would just do a small front mount that doesn't require any extreme modifications (fog removal, cutting radiator support, etc...). The side mount gets soaked pretty quick but w/ a small turbo you don't want much pressure drop either. A smaller FMIC would fit the bill just fine.

The only exception to this is if you change your mind about turbo's later. You may have to upgrade your FMIC again depending on what route you take...

Old supra side mount intercoolers can be had but hard to find. They are a way better version than the stock side mount. And depending on where you get the front mount from you can cut part of the backside of the crash support off and still have it function. Sorry I cant help about the side mount and how much it can take as for most people its one of the first upgrade they do is get a front mount.

If you are pushing that t28 to the max, you will heat soak that stock sidemount in a hurry. My car gets heatsoaked pretty quick with a t25. I, personally, would upgrade to a fmic. With anything larger than a t25.

Well a few questions haven't been asked.
Are you stick, or auto?
Is it a T28, B28, FPB28 etc
What are your current mods?

Answer these, and an educated answer can be given, instead of Guessing.
As some front mounts require some trimming to full support beam removal., also if you have an Auto that might change your Pipe routing, ABS? same thing.

I run an FP B28, and I have a front mount.

I agree fmic is the way to go. I tried a bigger as smic, it was expensive and when I decided to do more upgrading I had to go fmic. Should have just gone that route in the first place.

Seller told me its a Garett T28, i dont know if he knew that for sure or got it from somebody else.
Current mods: 3" cat back, AEM filter, 1gbov.

Somebody told me that there are Fmics that go right below the reinforcement bar, some drilling will be required, but thats no big deal, thats probably the ideal thing to do.

If you're going to max a small turbo you'd need a fmic anyways. It's going to be working a lot harder than a bigger turbo would to make that same power.

I personally like the upgraded smic with water injection. You're not always on boost constantly so the system can be set to spray only when needed and the rest of the time, when driving normally, you're not overtaxing the smic.

Using an smic is simple, the only thing you need to do is make sure to have proper ducting (which most people neglect) and open up the fender well (if you have a used smic, fix the bent fins and clean it out). You need to force feed the air to the smic since it's deeper inside the engine bay. I run a t28 on an upgraded smic and love the quick spool. Upside of the smic is that you'll never overheat as the radiator is open to fresh air, not fmic heated/turbulent air.

Punishment racing fmic kit if you don't wanna modify anything but the bumper a little to make room for the intercooler. I would get a vrsf fmic but will require small cutting around radiator support, but more then 1/2 the dsmers I am sure have that same setup for short route intercooler piping. Ets good kit but to much unless you ganna make like 500whp other kits are just fine. Side mount needs to be retired. I tried getting ets to make me a custom side mount but there to big on the nissan gtr. :(

Unless you plan on making like 300whp with like bigger injectors and fuel pump then where you are now just stick stock. Also feel free post pic your engine bay, we can tell alot bout your setup. I would just get a fmic and call it good you won't have to upgade later.

Well i found this on the thread you posted "Easy answer... Count the blades on the hot side. 11 blades = T25, 10 = T28 and 9 = Big28. " What is a hotside though ? maybe its a stupid question but i really dont know what it is LOL.

This is exactly what i want to do, just like 330HP is going to be enough for me, otherwise ill die on the road (too aggressive)...
I was thinking about walbro255 and Evo injectors, wide band AFR gauge, but then i run into problem of getting ECMlink (simply don't have enough funds for it just yet, maybe close to summer) but other than that i should be able to run like 20psi and be in that range or at least pretty close...

So far i have "t28", 3" catback, K&N Filter. Everything else is stock...

Hot side of the turbine is the side that bolts to the exhaust manifold. You will need to remove the o2 housing at the very least to see it. Do your goal you do not need a 255 a 190 and re-wire kit will do fine. Evo injectors are awesome and link is the best for tuning and logging FYI.

Well 255 will just get me more room to grow. Evo injectors i heard are 650cc but rate higher compared to other injectors. T28 will get up to 25PSI full run, and i don't think ill need its full power to get me there, so 20-22 PSI should be it. Fmic is a good mod for the car, but i dont feel like spending 500$ for something that will make no difference but more room to grow.

Out grow your goal you stated and more$$ with afpr and so on...

Depends on which evo most are closer to 510cc

Only offering what we know works if you already know...... Then why ask

You WILL need a Fmic and a method of tuning that t28 if you plan on pushing more than 12-14psi
