You're right. Only time will tell. I actually enjoy being the underdog and look forward to the challenge of the DSE class. I love racing and I'm ridiculously competitive. Maybe too much so. Some will take my comments here personally and think I'm just an arrogant jerk. That is not my intention nor is that true. I'm actually incredibly friendly. I haven't said anything I didn't have proof to back up with. You're also right. Very few "no nitrous" automatics have used a 67mm+ turbo. My point has been that even though they haven't been using 67mm+ turbos, they haven't needed to to win events. They're only a few cars that have been mid 9's or faster with a single power adder in a automatic DSM. John Wood is more of the exception, then what is called normal. I've read about his setup on Nabr, and it sounds great. He put in alot of time, money, and effort to make that work. I'm can't wait to see how the compound turbo will do, but i'm also wondering how much more RPM that car has left with his motor? I know "why" you built your car, and yes it is and has been very consitant and relieable. For reference big turbo cars, are 67mm turbo's or bigger. I'm not going to turn this into another 5spd vs. auto debate. Only time will tell, how it will work itself out. Let the best man win. Someimes, 3 out of 100 is all you need.
Johnny's MIVEC setup, I personally feel, is the future of big turbo automatics in the DSM world. And, hopefully the converter companies will continue innovation and design to continue bringing the stall times down while keeping good top end lock up. The domestic automatic world has had 50 years of design and engineering. DSMs are some of the only import vehicles that are going fast with factory automatic transmissions. For example, very few Supra drivers with automatics use the factory trans. Most move to a TH400 or Glide, which have ridiculous amounts of R&D in them from years in the domestic world. That includes converters and internals transmission parts like clutch packs, valve bodies, and gears. So that means we're 45 years behind the power curve as far as automatic R&D goes. Companies like Kiggly, Metro, Sinister, Precision Industries, and Bradco, among others, are doing what they can for us.
True statement.Of course they're faster. M/T's always trap higher. Or did you also mean quicker?Lots of quick autos out there these days. Even the 16G record is held by an auto. And if I remember correctly, the autos were taking home the trophys at last year's SO.
Oh yeah, Paul, if you didn't see post #4, you should go take a look.
