I drove 6 hours to Chicago to purchase a car and ended up getting stuck with a hotel bill and no car. Well while in Chicago I decided I would look for another car. I found a 1998 113k Eclipse Spyder GS-T Manual. The car looks clean inside and out minus one dent on the hood. It test drove fine and all but once I bought it and drove it down the road two things happened. The seal around the bottom of the windshield flew up and scared the shit out of me and then the transmission had a odd whine sound to it and started chirpping. The car drives fine except for the trans. I seems to go into gear ok. The top gears 1,3,5 seem deeper then the bottom though. I don't own any other Manual Eclipse so IDK how its suppose to feel. The problem seems to go away when you press in the clutch though. And sometime on take off in first it jerks some not like a hard jerk thought just enough to make the car move IDK how to explain. Ohh also the car isn't making any boost, or so it seems to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The trans sounds like the clutch to me replace that.
Also making no boost do a boost leak test that should show you why your not boosting
is the car smoking?

I hope its the clutch. =/ I don't want to be in the car anymore then I have to be. The car doesn't seem to be smoking but it was also late at night. I left the car in IL because I didn't feel safe driving it home. I'm going to trailer it home asap. Anyone else have any ideas or comments. I don't want to go replacing stuff to find out its something else. More opinions would be great. Thanks again. :|

You need to drop that drain plug and look at the fluid. Sounds like it's low/the fluid is bad. I've had this happen once when I was first learning about cars. Drained the fluid and it had only a little more than a cup in it. Filled it up with GM Synchromesh and all was good.

+1. I had this happen on my first truck too. Dropped the drain plug and there was only enough gear oil to coat the bottom of a gallon bucket. By the time I found this out, It was whining pretty bad. When I pulled the tranny apart, the gears were burnt and the tranny was pretty much trash.

Ouch. >.o That sucks...

But yeah. If you didn't drive it too far you MIGHT be able to save it. All you can do is drain it, check for a mass of flakes, and pour more fluid in. If you're lucky then you'll be fine. New fluid is cheaper than a new trans.

:thumb: That's for sure!

Also check the condition of the fluid. If it is getting dark (or black like mine was in my truck :nono:) you may want to run the new fluid for a few miles and change it again. Just to flush all of the old dirt and bac oil out.

I will be sure to do the fluid stuff first. Sounds the cheapest way to attack it. I guess my dad has a friend who works on transmissions who may be able to diagnose it properly. If he can't I guess a clutch or a new trans is my next guess? I wish I knew more about these types of things.

Go with fluid. Like we said, just drain it and check the old stuff. There likely isn't much there to begin with. Most people never change transmission fluid for whatever reason.

If it's no fluid, drop the trans and check the clutch assembly. If that's not the issue then you know what it's time for.
