You can do 500 whp safely with a Walbro 255, but I would recommend doing the rewire as it's a good idea regardless of what pump setup you run.

Yes, I know that the single Walbro is more than capable of doing so. My concern is that I am running E85 and the information about it failing on some applications running E85 is not something I want to go through again. With over 3K + hours of testing on E85 without a single fail is worth the safety in my book. Also, I currently have the "rewire" done but to me that does not sound as safe as having a fuel pump that comes with the ability of flowing more than I need without the "rewire" and is an in-tank application at the same time.
 
Just installed the pump after arriving today from MAPerformance. Great service and fast/free shipping.

Couple notes:

1. The electrical connection on the pump is molded too small. Tried 3 different connectors that I've accumulated over the years from Walbro installs and none of them go all the way on...the tab doesn't click. Applied enough force so it is a press fit, I don't think it will be coming loose.

2. Install kit didn't come with the lower o-ring spacer. I had extra ones again from past installs, so a non issue for me.

I've failed x3 255HP Walbro pumps on E85. I'm really hoping this pump lasts. The noise level is reduced compared to the 255 Walbro, but if anyone is complaining about noise from a Walbro they have never heard a pump capable of 1000+ HP. Up until now those pumps have been the only alcohol compatible EFI pumps (save for the Mallory 5110FI, and maybe a couple others). Otherwise it would be a Aeromotive A1000/Fuelab 41401/SX/etc. They are all way louder than a Whinybro. I've contemplated using a Bosch 044, but haven't wanted to risk failing another pump on E85.

The Deatschwerks pump should fit 90% of the DSM market, unless you have a turbo that supports over 60 lb/min of airflow.

This would be great if they could include this in the installation kit as some of us do not have many spare parts laying around the garage to suffice the requirement.
 
Wanted to add something to this thread...

I had a suspected issue with the pump I just bought from DW (they are local to me), so I dropped it off yesterday for some testing. As it turns out, I had one of only 3 pumps that they have seen an issue with, out of thousands (according to DW anyway LOL. The PRV was opening sooner than it should, allowing pressure and flow to drop at mid-range airflow amounts.

I will go on record and say that Deatschwerks has some of the best customer service I've ever encountered. Those guys don't know me from anyone, yet the owner called me twice to keep me informed of what was going on, and was personally involved in the whole process of figuring out the issue. In the end, he has a brand new pump waiting for me to pick up no questions asked, and was very honest and forgiving about the whole thing.

Fantastic. I wish all companies were like this and backed their products up to this extent. :thumb:
 
Sounds like some awesome news Craig. Hopefully mine doesn't happen to be #4 but even still, it's rare to find a company to go to such extents to help a customer out. Makes me even happier I choose to go with the DW300. I just hope I can get that beast installed sometime in the coming weeks.

That's excellent news. Not very often now a days do you hear about customer service like that. Makes the pump that much more attractive to me, thanks for sharing. :thumb:
 
How many ohms does a new DW pump show between the two pump terminals?
 
Just installed mine a couple weeks ago. I have had limited drive time with it but I will say that it is quieter than the walbro. It has more of a hum, whereas the walbro has more of a wine. I like the hum better.
 
I was just reminded of this thread, and thought someone may find this interesting...

I've been running the DW pump for a while now, but I was at the limit on E85 at around 28psi boost, and 41psi base fuel pressure. Battery voltage looked good at a minimum of 13.6v, but pump pressure was falling off as soon as boost hit a plateau, and the car would lean out a bit.

Here is what boost vs. fuel pressure looked like. Notice how fuel pressure starts dropping right when the boost levels off, while the WB error climbs above the 0% reference line at the same time:

Ricky (dacowgod) sent me a BAP (boost a pump) to play with, so I installed it and set the voltage to the minimum, which is just a little over 15vdc. Here is a pull under almost the same conditions:

Notice how the fuel pressure exactly matches the boost curve now, and the car is actually running a little rich up top due to the over-compensation in the VE table.

I have no idea how far I can push it with the BAP (and probably won't find out since it's just a fun DD), but the extra volt and a half made all the difference in the world as to what this pump can do.

The bottom line is these pumps like voltage...so make absolutely sure to supply them with a good steady dose of it. ;)

I read a little while back about someone who first got one, couldn't get there oem plug (power) to actually "snap/click" on he had to force it down onto the pump, just so happened to fit was so tight it seemed to hold on ok.

You will have to forgive me, last time I swapped pumps was like 2006 ROFL. Not sure if it was just a 2g thing or 1g, or both. *shrug* just happened to think about it so im asking, while waiting to hear about some reviews. Once I get out of Afghanistan im very much considering one for my upgrade from the weak ass 190lph walbro.
 
Calan, interesting post about the fuel pressure and the results with the BAP, seems even the best pumps can benefit from a nice high and steady voltage source. Are you running a mitsu alternator>?

Also at 28psi with this DW pump leaning out how does that compared to a wally 255hp at the same voltage (no BAP) at 28psi>?

It definitely flows more than a 255hp, but I'm not ready to stamp it as the "ultimate drop-in replacement" quite yet.

You may remember that the first DW pump I had was defective (pressure relief valve opening earlier than it should). This one held pressure much better out of the box of course, but I'm still not all that impressed with it at stock voltage levels.

But at higher voltages, it really wakes up. Even at 15v, it's much quieter than any 255 I've run. And the fact that DW is here local to me and has great customer service (at least from what I've seen) is also a big plus.

My alternator is a cheapo from Autozone that I've just gotten lucky with so far.

YOu might want to think about the old saturn/chevy CS alternator, the work is VERY minimal to install it and the voltage gains everywhere are outsanding. And dependingon where you palce the source wire you can adjust your voltage into the battery/car to your liking withing reason.

bare with me, i'm still talking about pumps over all

In my datalogs i would see voltage as low as 11.2 - 11.4v under wide open/high RPM driving on the mitsu alt (and i was replacing them yearly under warranty just to be safe), They would do an honest 12.8 - 13.2 under normal driving but at idle and when you really spun the thing up it would seriously drop voltage in both cases (i even saw evidence in the form of my tach going whack-o above 7k RPM where it would jsut bounce around like crazy)

When i swapped to the CS alt i gained a LOT of IDC back that previousely was burned up trying to keep from going lean, everywhere in the WOT >4500RPM range was pig rich, i went from old school 11.5's for AFR to being in the 10.9 - 10.7 range just from voltage (*as i'm sure you'll attest is possible) and this was on dual wally 255's (both HP and parallel intank) now my voltage is much better on all arond driving as well, I see no less than 13.6 at idle (sometimes 13.2 idling at night with all accesories on because the pulley is a bit too large) but when i'm wide open and have my source wire getting signal from the junction block that all my accessories and pumps draw from i keep a solid 14.1 - 14.2 through out the RPM band even as high as 9k RPM over revving

It's maybe not as good as a BAP, but it's a BAE (boost-a-everything) for the entire car, picking up and helping with pump flow as well as injector latency. It's seriousely IMO one of those "must do mods" that even if my car was bone stock, i'd have a chevy alternator on it :D

ON a side note i've always wanted a BAP to play with a little; but right now i'm out of injector on my 1000's (AGAIN) and need to jump up to some 1200 - 1450's as soon as i can afford to :(

Soprry to have stepped sideways in the pump discussion but i think a lot of confusion of how some people run out of pump and injectors at "X" boost/airflow possibly has a lot to do with the voltage in their system overall and no so much to do with the tune and physical pieces on the car

If I wasn't running Meth injection I'd ditch it for an Aeromotive or Jay Racing. This pump is really a disappointment.

I saw that :D I just didn't want to bug you about them untill i had some cash in my hands, I've got a bunch of parts i'm about to list for sale and hopefully they move fast enough to get me into something like those :D

You do have the pump re wired as well? What voltage is the pump getting?
