I have 300 miles on my new motor and was driving back on the highway from a friends house when I start to hear this sort of clattering shaking loose sort of sound right around 3400 rpm it was very faint at first then it became aparent that something was very wrong. It was so loud that it was all you could hear on the car.

I pulled over and it idled very rough and was barely running. I turned it off and looked over the engine bay and started it back up and did the same thing, I tried driving it and only got about a couple thousand feet and it was making this whining sound that would com and go frequently and it finally gave up and died.

Today I looked at the timing marks and they all lined up as perfect as could be. Did a compression test and the results in order from 1 to 4
160 180 185 180.
Iam confused as to what happened. Took the vc off and all the rockers and springs are still in place.

So what could it be you think?

I would drain the oil and check for metal in the oil.

I changed the oil at 30 then at 75 then at 150 then I was about to change it again asap, but are you saying bearing failure or are you hinting towards something else? I can do that tomorrow though.

Drain 3/4 or a little more of the oil and take the oil pan off to look for debris/metal chunks or shavings... hopefully you won't see anything in there but it sounds like a really bad knocking rod.

If u take the pan off then grab each on of the rod caps and see how much they move. Then take a rod cap off and inspect the bearing surface. You will probably see that it looks pretty bad.

What was done to the crank?

Did you clean it at home?
\
Did a machine shop hot tank it?

Did you have the oil galley balls in the rod throws removed?

It got polished and Mic'ed we accidentally nicked 4, 3, and 2 of the rod journals on the crank took it back and had the imperfections removed and the guy said what you can see is below the surface and won't cause any failure.

As for the car, I tinkered with it and got it to start up and run. It makes a knocking sound at idle and when I reved it slightly. I removed each spark plug wire and the sound didn't change. Oil pressure was at 70psi (castrol 10w30 conventional)

I hear a crank pulley can cause a simmilar sound when its bad. My pulley does wobble I noticed before this incident.

Well start off by changing the pulley.

Did you clean the crank after it was polished?

Can't recall but iam most positive I did. I used federal mogul assembly lube. It is green. Ill see if I can get a friends pulley and try it.

Well you are on the out side mileage wise for what I see for a spun rod bearing from an improper cleaned crank.

On all my builds, I pull the oil galley balls out to clean out the crud build up.

I do hope that a failed rod bearing is not your issue.

thanks for the info. The only way I will be able to know is I would have to give both machine shops that did my crank a call and ask. I did not take those out myself and clean the galleries. Ill post back when I gather more information.

Most shops do not. You have to ask.

You will know if they did once you drop the pan. Instead of balls, most replace with a set screw

What happens if they don't get installed back? I can't recall seeing or not seeing them.

I did forget to mention the rotating assembly was balanced.

UPDATE: decided to take the crank pulley off and start it up. Still made the knocking noise Q_Q sad to say its rod knock. Not sure what I want to do now, probably end up parting it out and saying goodbye to her. Can't afford it and I don't want to put in the time or energy do figure out why the bearing failed.
