Ok, I just picked up a old 6 bolt 4g63 from a friend of a friend. I'm sure that the motor came out of a old TSI, I trust the guy but he has no idea what year the car was. My question is about the oil filter, 2 different # come up for filters for years 90-94. Is there a way to tell which one to use.

Solution
If you mean the oil filter, you can use any year of them. It's just a size difference. The oil filter HOUSING, the early year will be the air cooled and the following year will be water/oil.

Solution
the air cooled is the 90 only but is very commonly swapped to be used on alot of dsm's for the efficiency is better. i would go with the 90 style its not only worth more in value but its alot better in cooling the oil.
