i recent received a ticket for speeding funny thing is the cop didn't have the radar up and swears i was speeding i know i wasn't i was in third gear with a pretty much stock setup at the time. I was wondering if anyone knew a website that would have this type of info thank you.

2g DSMs at redline: 1st is 40mph, 2nd is 80 3rd is 110 4th is 130 and 5th is speed limited to 140.
Sorry thats what I remember from my days prior to my tickets. Maybe there off by a little. Anyways I've done the 7 cent trick twice now and it worked for me. What you do is send in the check for the ticket 7 cents over the price of the ticket. The cost of a stamp nowadays is 39 cents or something like that. The registry is not allowed to keep your 7 cents extra but it isn't worth sending it back to you. This means it just stays in the system and the insurance company never finds out about it, thus avoiding a surcharge. If you don't believe me you might as well try it anyways. What do you have to lose. You don't get in trouble for it and it works. I did hear however that it has to be exactly 7 cents.

Alright time to get technical.

According to http://www.vfaq.com/mods/Trannies.html the gear ratios are as follows for a 1g AWD M/T car, which you have according to your profile.

1st: 3.083
2nd: 1.684
3rd: 1.115
4th: 0.833
5th: 0.666 WTF

Final drive: 4.929

I am also assuming that you are running stock sized 205/55R16 tires, which have a rolling diameter of 24.88 inches, as different sizes of tires affect your final drive, different sizes would skew the results. I am also assuming you are at a stock redline of 7,000 RPM.

Using this calculator http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/tyres.html (which seems accurate) heres the results.

1st: 34 mph
2nd: 62 mph
3rd: 94 mph
4th: 126 mph
5th: 157 mph

So depending on what your ticket was, (you never actually specified what you were ticketed at) you could have been theoretically speeding by 12mph in 2nd gear. However if you were at 4000 RPM, which you claim you definitely weren't above, the results would be slightly different.

@4000RPM

1st: 19 mph
2nd: 35 mph
3rd: 53 mph
4th: 72 mph
5th: 90 mph

Not that my word, or some mumbo-jumbo online speed calculator, or specification website will really make a difference in court, its pretty much your word versus the radar gun.

Good Luck!

The 7 cent rule works in california, they have to mail you a refund check and you gotta cash/deposit it before they can apply it to ## driving record, but you'll be clear with the state, not having a outstanding balance.

DSM insurance is cheap when you dont have any tickets.
Ah- you'd better do a fact-check on that myth.

I most states, if you fight the charges and the officer either doesnt show up or cannot prove that he picked you up on radar they will drop charges.

I have fought 2 speeding tickets and both were dropped. In the first one the state of Minnesota requires that the radar gun be calibrated once every month, the officer could not prove his radar had been calibrated and the ticket was dropped. The second the officer apperantly had more important things to do and didn't show up to defend himself, ticket was dropped.

check your ticket. did he mark down what he used to pull you over?? honeslty it's his word against yours. I lived in NJ all my life and on the ticket they have to mark what they used to pull you over, you know what i mean. I now live in VA and it's the same deal here.

You could have asked for proof as well. I'd fight it to the end man. good luck!!!!

2g DSMs at redline: 1st is 40mph, 2nd is 80 3rd is 110 4th is 130 and 5th is speed limited to 140.
Fight the ticket. If he didn't get you on radar he doesn't have as much of a case. Just tell them that you were going with the flow of traffic. Wait was this the top of third gear on the highway or on a regular road?
It's misinforming to say that all 2G DSM's are geared like this being that the FWD and the AWD are geared different.

Hi, new to this forum, not new to DSMs.

62Mph at redline in second is the industry standard. There was an article in Sport Compact Car a few years back about how all the major auto makers set the gear ratios for the fastest 0-100Kph (61.2Mph) times. In order to post the best times in all the car mags 2nd gear is set that way regardless of 5 or 6 speed transmissions.

On another note, I believe the big difference between AWD and FWD is 1st and not 3rd. I could be mistaken though.

Holy crap, 3rd gear at 110, BALLER!!! ROFL

No, in my experience, not scientific, 1st is 38 mph at 7500 rpm, 2nd is 65-68 at 7500 (you get the idea_, 3rd is almost, but not quite 100, 4th is about 125, and ive been too scared and probably too little horsepower to top out 5th. But I beleive there was a thread with 2g awd ratios and it was calculated with stock gsx rims that you would be gear ratio limited to 164.3 or something mph.

Show me a stock FWD that tops out at 80 in 2nd, 110 in 3rd @ 7000 rpm. :p
When my '99 was FWD, I could hit 108 in 3rd gear and 140 in 4th at 7500. I have a video on youtube of it, but I can't access that site from work, so I'll have to wait until I get home.

I know an OE AWD first gear is shorter than an OE FWD 1st. I'm not sure about the other gears though.

Redline is 7000 rpm, 500 rpm makes a pretty big difference.

Here are some readings off my Link logs.

1. Actual track run : 1st = 35.6 @ 7862, 2nd = 66.7 @ 7700, 3rd = 95.2 @ 7426, 4th = 111 @ 6345.

2. 2nd and 3rd gear full pulls : 2nd = 70.4 @ 7911, 3rd = 107.3 @ 7945.

My logger reads 101mph @ 6980rpm in third gear.
Just for comparison.

Oh, and lets not forget that 2 seemingly identical speedo's can read quite differently - especially when at high speed (greater margin of error). I'd not take my gauge's word for it, only a logging device. And who knows if thats even 100% accurate.

Yes, it appears that 2G FWD's do indeed have taller gears. Here's an old video of when my car was FWD running the ole' v-trim.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDImSC8xE80

I'm assuming some of the diferences are probably coming from wheel/tire size.

That, and people are just reading this off their speedo..which is not accurate at high speed let alone comparable to another identical car.
I used to assemble/manufacture/test all kinds of automotive gauges at an electronics factory I worked for.

But I definitely agree that wheel/tire combo will have a significant impact.

My video above, was made running on the stock wheel/tire size.

With my 18" wheels and 40 profile tire, my speedometer reads 74 when I'm traveling at 70 mph. This was verfied via radar.

Paul, I have no doubt FWD have taller gears because in fact they do, my comment was about the differences between AWD's in this thread. As for stock FWD's hitting 80 in 2nd and 110 in 3rd at redline, What I saw in your video were 68 in 2nd and 102 in 3rd, redline being 7000 rpm. Not to mention the person (as well as OP) who posted the misinformation owns an AWD. ;)

I just want to throw in that my 2G GSX trapped at 101.43 in third but I also bounced off the rev limiter at 7500 right at the finish line. And for the record I have stock size tires on my car and my speedometer reads about 5 mph over at 80 mph. So if I go by what my speedometer or logger says then it looks like I am going about 107.
