Hello all. So here is my situation. I just bought a 97 TSi AWD with no engine, turbo system or exhaust, that is currently set up for a 6 bold engine. I also have a 95 TSi AWD, running and driving, (very rusted out) with a good 7 bolt engine in it. (180k mi, never crank walked, never rebuilt, never even been removed form the car. I haven't checked compression but runs well.) I am wondering if I should just rip the 7 bolt out of the rusty car and drop it in the 97 TSi (after doing a head gasket, timing belt and other routine maintenance while it is removed form the car of course.) Would it be worth it? What all would I need and how much work would it be to revert it back to a 7 bolt? Or should I just try to sell my old 95 complete and piece a 6 bolt engine and turbo system together as a winter project? Please keep in mind I am new to the turbo DSM's. Thanks, any help is appreciated!

He's saying if he could swap his 7 bolt in his 6 bolt car that originally was a 7bolt. I say yes just use, the 95 harness and ecu out of the rust bucket!

edit: btw with that many miles on the 7bolt you should probably check all tolerances and consider a rebuild while its out, I wouldnt want to do the work twice!

I would do timing components on the 7 bolt and install it for now. You can use a 1g CAS and not have to re-wire anything. Then over the winter you can get you 6 bolt build going and have it ready for spring.

This way you get seat time in the car.

So I would need the 95 ECU to put the 95 7 bolt into the 97 car? Or would just using the 1G CAS like Oliver said enable me to use the ECU that is in the 97?

Either ECU will work, I would send the 95 ecu out to be socketed and run that with DSM Link. The 1g CAS will allow you to run the engine without rewiring the 2g crank and cam angle sensors. Send me a PM or give me a call and I will go into more detail.

Oh, ok I see what you mean. I will get a hold of you if i need any info when I get the engine out, and work done to it, and am ready to drop it in the 97. Do you know of anywhere that can socket the ECU for DSMlink? Is it something i could do myself? (I used to work at a place that made printed circuit boards for John Deere.) I would be willing to ship it out if I had to. This is something I have been looking into doing for awhile, with my goals I know I am going to need DSMlink for logging/tuning.

Also CHAR-FT said use the harness our of the 95. Do the engine harnesses just unplug at the firewall? or what? I hear this a lot but am not really sure how it worked.

Thanks a lot Oliver and CHAR-FT, you've both have been a lot of help!

If your putting a 95 motor into a 97, you'll have to use a 1G CAS, easiest way

The 1G CAS and the 97-99 CAS harness (sold by RRE) is what you need. So about $100 all together.

Yes, you can do it yourself and you seem like you have some experience doing it.

If you want to send it to get socketed look into ecmtuning ECMTuning, Inc. -who also do dsmlink,

or Steve DSM (Talon Eclipse Laser) and 3S (3000GT and Stealth) ECU Service and Repair from here on the forums.

He said it's already set up for a 6-bolt, so the wirings done if that's the case. It's not hard to splice 4 wires anyways vs buying the adapter.

Alright, awesome, thanks for all the help guys!

Also, if I were to do it myself, where would I go about getting the socket? is that something radio shack would have?
