Hey guys, I'm just finishing up installing my 6bolt engine and getting it running. I need ideas for a cheap semi-decent oil cooler for my 6 bolt engine.

I know I could use a transmission cooler core or something, but wont the lines want to blow apart under the high PSI?

I know dsmotorsport sells a kit all nice fittings for 180, is there anything I can do for cheaper?

Lemme know guys, thanks

PS. the thread size for the input/output is 16mm metric thread...

I have a transmission cooler on mine. Hooked together with rubber hose and hose clamps. Been like that for about 2 years now, not a drop leaking.

Are you sure the oil cooler housing has 16mm metric threads? the reason I ask is because I am doing the same thing as you right now. As far as the DSMotorsports kit, is convenient, but expensive, and the cooler itself looks really crappy to me. I will be going with something like this: http://store.summitracing.com/defau...eywordSearch&DDS=1&N=115&target=egnsearch.asp

It doesn't show any pictures for that one, but it is basically like this one, just taller:

Although the one I linked you is expensive, the B&M units are a lot cheaper. The DSMmotorsports kit is a B&M one. I would try to get a smaller Earls or Fluidyne one, they look like a better design. I will also be running -10AN lines for the cooler, and should be able to pick up the fittings and line for not too much through summit.

Dan

Find a good 1990 factory oil cooler. You'll need the oil filter housing, hardware and the cooler itself, and you can make your own lines. The 1990 is an actual oil cooler, unlike all of the 91-up units which have a "sandwhich" style oil filter housing and engine coolant is used to cool the oil.

The housing has 16mm X1.5 threads. You can just buy a simple adapter to go from the 16mm to 10 an. I think mine were 8 dollars a piece.

EDIT: How much are you looking to spend on a cooler? If you want the best go with Setrab. And check ebay also. They have namebrand coolers for much less that Summit.

Just mounted this HUGE cooler on my boys laser this past weekend. It's not completed yet, only one ss line ran. It fits right between the radiator and front mount.

That thing is a monster!

Well, can you guys link me to some fittings???

When you link off summit, you have to open the link in a new tab or new window then copy and paste the URL, Otherwise it just links me to a search criteria.

I wanna have less then like 90-100 into this...

Whatever will work reliabily for cheap is best...

Thanks again guys

Not to highjack your thread or anything, but would having a large tube and fin style cooler have any adverse affects on anything due to the larger volume and length?

And to the original poster: I assume you already have the housing since you have the thread size posted. This being the case I can give you all the part numbers through summit to get you set up if you contact me on AOL instant messenger. Also, why not run a factory 1990 oil cooler?

Dan

Yeah he went a bit overkill with the size of the oil cooler, but his intentions are good. Since it will be getting less airflow behind the front mount, he wanted more surface area for cooling. I am just waiting for overheating problems. The car has never been started, its been a project car for about 3 years. It should be running by spring. I will be starting a thread on both mine and his projects.

I don't see why a larger tube and fin style oil cooler would have adverse affects.

Anyone have a picture of a 90 oil cooler? Or dimensions?

Nothing huge or extreme but great (IMO) for my driver with a 6 bolt swap. Its an earls oil cooler I got off ebay new for not all that much. Made all the SS lines, a bit overkill being -10 but the fittings I got with the cooler were and I did not want to have to buy even more expensive fittings. Could have gone cheaper on the lines but im overall happy with it. For the brackets, I bent up some aluminum and cut it all to what I needed, I want to weld it up when I have time but I wanted to play with my 6 bolt swap... can you blame me I got the car minus motor so I just wanted to drive it.
If I had to do it again I think A stock 90 cooler would have been quite sufficient and a cheaper route.

Forgot to mention in the above post the car is a 2G turbo, everyone sees my sig and thinks im posting about the wrong car LOL. I need to update my pics

did you get to check what size cooler you have on?

I think I'm gonna go with your setup, got plenty of 10AN lines left after finishing the fuel sys and dont really need an oversized cooler for my app.

-treebonker

What the hell you need -10 for on the fuel system?
