6 bolt swap : Oil Filter housing?

I keep hearing about this 90 oil filter housing i need to run with my 6 bolt swap.

Ive searched a little and havent really found any answers as to why i must use this specific year housing.


Could anyone shine a little light on the issue?

The only reason you would want a '90 housing is if you want to run an external air cooled oil cooler. Otherwise, just use any other 6 bolt housing and it will be internally cooled by the coolant.

The 90 yr oil filter housing uses a external oil cooler. 91 up use a water-oil cooler. The 90 yr OFH help keep oil temps down alot better. Thats why everyone recommends to use this yr.

If you live in a HOT area like Matt here It MIGHT not be helpful to run an AIR cooled oil cooler. Also if you're NOT driving and creating airflow its NOT cooling.

I keep my Coolant temps around 190*
COOLANT/WATER cools pretty efficiently, so maybe thats why mitsu changed to the Water cooled design for 91-99 DSM's

I always wondered if anyone has ever added an external cooler to a water cooled unit to double the cooling?
