Tonight after school I'll post a pic of the arms on the tranny, and the gear shifter itself.

I was told that the 1990 tranny had is own unique shifter cables, base and shifter mechanism. I am having problems shifting too in my car with a stock tranny. The previous owner swapped one from another car with 80k on the tranny. thing is, i have a 1990 so good chance is that the tranny is from another car. Now i need to figure out what year the tranny is and so on. If it turns out to be the same year as your car, maybe we can swap shift linkage?

this is true, i had a 91 tranny in my 90 fwd and i had to adjust the linkage under the shifter boot and move the bracket around that bolts the cables to the tranny. it shifted like mud until i did that.

DISREGARD that link, it only works if you have the same video program as me.

Here are some pics that show my gearshift seal issue. I really just want to know if I need to keep this transmission open to fix/replace this seal.

Has anyone fixed/replaced this seal?

You can change the seal from the outside of the tranny. Drive the roll pin out of the top that holds the likage to the rod. Now, the linkage part slides off and the seal can be removed.

But I was told that the TOP roll pin only releases the shifter arm. Also, I was told the shifter rod/shaft has to be removed from the inside. I can visualize being able to pry up that first brass seal but I am not sure about the 2nd and 3rd seal. (It's strange; the 2nd & 3rd seal are the same part #'s.)

I ordered the 3 seals and a new boot, and I STILL have the transmission apart. I am going to replace the seals next week when the parts come, while the transmission is apart just to be sure.

another thread helped me out with my problem. got the seal ordered and should be here tomorrow or monday.

do you have a chiltons or haynes manual? if not use autozone's repair guide on their website, its almost identical. that will help you out when replacing that seal.

im putting a 90s 4g63T tranny into a 93.... Ive heard that I only need to change the shifter bracket on the tranny and use the one that came from the 93 and I should be able to shift fine... Is this true, or is there something else I will have to do to get it to shift properly??
( The 93 tranny is bad, have to use the 90s by the way )

I switched everything possible - including cables just to be safe.
That is because you only changed one of two brackets on the tranny.

nightspeed87, if you're able to change both brackets on the tranny, you don't need to change anything else. However if you're unable to remove the roll pin that holds the main shifter bracket to the shifter rod (Not an easy task), you will need to swap everything before the tranny brackets to the shifter itself.

Damn more work, I thought I only had to change the bracket on top of the actual tranny itself ( in the engine bay ) So your saying there is a roll pin that holds the main shifter bracket to shifter rod I have to change, do you have/ know where I can find any pics of this? Do i have to remove my whole center console to get to it?:notgood:

( Id like to keep my 93 shifter also because the 90s shifters are longer and uglier. The 93 - 94 shifters I believe are the shortest. )

Thats what Ive found on vfaq about it.... Says I wont be able to access reverse, or 5th gear.... What will happen if I only change out the bracket on the actual tranny and not the roll pin you discussed..?

I am in the depths of this very swap myself, so lets keep this thread going and get enough clear information to make a tech article and put this 90' FWD transmission swap stuff to bed.

Yea but doesnt seem like too many ppl have had this problem, and the ones ive talked to seem to have just swapped out everything ( shifter mounting, cables, brackets ) therefore yea they wouldnt have a problem, but theres no way im about to take all that apart I have too much other stuff to worry about right now, and besides I like my shifter, the 90s shifter is long, ugly and unorthodox compared to mines.
The bracket sounds easy, but the roll pin that "oldman" was talking about sounds like a b*tch. What makes it even more of a b*tch is that I dont have a 90s roll pin in the first place to swap out even if I was to go that route.. Im wondering is there anything custom I can do to fabricate or just make that work temporarily for at least a month, i dont care if I dont have 5th gear for a month, long as I have 1st-4th and reverse, because I am going to be buy a jdm gvr-4 tranny in dec anyways and get a rebuild done, so I just need this tranny to last till then, and I dont want to swap everything and then have to swap everything back when I get another tranny....:notgood:
