Langley,
I just changed the lifters in my car, I went to turn it over and it didn't quite start, there was a muffled sound kinda hard to describe then it died. What could have happened? And, more importantly, I'm now scared to turn it over again, what should I do?

just turned it over again and the exhaust made a pop then it died after about 1 second, could I possibly have thrown off the timing belt or something. I also took the cover off and the marks on the cam gears seem to be lining up. By the way, I followed the instructions on VFAQ. I am also afraid to give it some gas because I'm hoping I didn't have a valve hit a cylinder or something. please help. :sosad:

how can you tell if something like the valves hitting the cylinders has occured? I am assuming that if that happened I wouldn't be able to turn the car over again, correct?

If your timing was off it would either run like garbage or not start at all or smash a piston. check and recheck the timing marks.

Definitely pull the valve cover and check to see if any of the "rockers" have fallen off. I would be surprised if a "lifter" (hydraulic lash adjuster - HLA) is out of place.

Did you bleed the HLAs before you installed them? Not bleeding them could cause the valves to kiss pistons in a worst case scenario. Valves kissing pistons could cause the belt to slip as well.

So first check that all of the rockers are in place. Then check the timing belt for correct timing. If that is all good, check the CAS (cam angle sensor) connection to make sure it is well connected. A loose wire to the CAS could cause the car to not start or even attempt to fire.

what would cause the pop in the exhaust?

If you were trying to crank the car and it wouldn't start all the fuel that's being pushed into cylinders isn't getting burnt and is getting throw into the exhaust stream then if it's hot or if the spark ignites it will cause it to "pop" or burn in your tail pipe.

I just took off the valve cover again and everything is right. Should I try to start the car again and give it some gas or would that cause even more damage if the timing is off? I am also starting to think that I will tow it down to my mechanic and get him to check the timing because, honestly I don't really know how to do that.

Well you can't really check it without the car running. move the cam angle sensor around a bit and try it again. If you hear metal on metal it's to late...i'm thinking of what else to check but it sounds like a timing problem check to see if the dirt around the CAS is where it was like try and get it right back to where it was.

Cam timing Bro. Double check maybe a tooth out or something. Did you soak or pre-oil the lifters prior to installation. Soak Method clean coffee can, use the same oil in your engine and let soak for a day. Oil will seep in. In a hurry take a oiler, the pistol grip type with a hard non flexable nozzle. Mate it to the lifter oil passage on the side and pump till you see oil coming from the lifter body on top. Please repost your findings.

should I try taking out the MPI fuse and cranking it a couple times to prime the lifters and to listen for any contact?

NO first find out if timing has jumped!!! If it has not yes disable mpi and crank for 10 - 15 sec intervals this may take up to five - 10 mins for lifters to pump up. This is due to the restricted in oil flow in the head. Better to take spark plug out to do this. Less strain on starter.

ok, I am taking my car into the mechanic tomorrow. Now, what sequence of checks should I get him to do to the car before trying to start it again? Chaeck timing belt marks, ignition timing, remove the valve cover to check for things or what? Please, if someone can list a specific checkist for me that would be great.
