I have a 1991 Mitsubishi eclipse gsx auto and I have a squeaking noise that I can't figure out where it is coming from. I have replaced the alternator and harmonic balancer but still no luck. Also when I drive through a water puddle the noise goes away for a second. I will pay the person that figures out what the problem is $10 paypal.

Is your timing cover cracked and rubbing on the inside? against the idler pulley or something? It seems awefully weird that with no belts other than timing hooked up and u get no noise, but you get noise no matter what accessory is connected... It was a brand new or used crank pulley.

As far as I can tell my timing cover is not cracked. And the crank pulley was a brand new oem one. Yes if I have either the A/C belt or waterpump belt on it makes a noise, but they are two different noises.

The problem still isn't diagnosed,

I took the timing cover off to see if the noise goes away but it doesn't.
Here is another vid but with the timing cover off and the a/c belt off.

It almost sounds like it's coming from my camshaft area but I can't tell for sure. Any suggestions to what this could be would be appreciated.
Thanks

What kind of belts?
I fought a problem with squeaky belts on my Talon for ages. Some belts seem to squeal more than others. I had good luck with Goodyear belts for being less squeaky. Belt conditioner spray is just a bad bandaid. Fix the problem.
You have two different squeals. Sounds like two different problems to me.
In my case; I had a lot of bad squealing at startup. Never found the problem until I had motor out of the car.
1. My fancy beautiful Fluidamper crank pulley which I love after killing 3 OEM crank pulleys had filled up with burned rubber. So instead of there being nice Vs there were Us. I fixed that with a wire brush.
2. The actual main body of the alternator was cracked right at the tensioner mounting point. So no matter how tight the belt was... In reality the belt would only get so tight and then actually start spreading the body of the alternator apart. New alternator time.
3. Looking at the inside of the water pump you could definitively see where the water pump bearing was going bad and prop of the water pump was chewing the body of the waterpump. I could see that producing an annoying chirping sound
So you might be looking for actual multiple problems. Get that alternator out. Get it in your hands in good light and visually inspect it. Make sure there is no burned belt debris built in any of your pulleys.
Just a thought; did you delete your balance shafts?
I always spin any new bearing that I'm about to put in by hand before I put it in. It better spin silky smooth. I spin by hand every bearing I take out just to see what they feel like. My balance shaft tensioner pulley bearing felt like crap. So did my alternator. My waterpump felt loose and sloppy. It spun really easily. New water pumps will not spin freely. They will spin smoothly but you shouldn't be able to flick it by hand and have it spin ten times. New waterpump = new waterpump seals. My alternator spun like it had grit in it. 2G alternator is $69 @ Orielly autoparts with a $17 core charge.

You replaced timing belt idler pulley and tensioner pulley with new ones? How did they feel before you put them on? They use cartridge bearings but do not be afraid to pop open a sealed cartridge bearing and make sure there is adaquate amounts of grease in it. Maybe you got a bearing that was made after 3:30 on a Friday? Very easy to open a sealed cartridge bearing with an exacto knife without damaging anything. Hi temp grease. Good stuff.
I see balance shafts in our vehicles as liability. Just something more to go wrong. The bearings on my front balance shaft looked like crap. But all the rest of the bearings in the motor looked fine. Go figure.
I am not sold that it isn't a timing belt or timing belt component issue. Sure it doesn't squeal with the accessory belts removed but at that point there is no load on the motor. The AC belt doesn't squeal? Try putting on just that belt and turn on your AC and see if it then starts chirping. I'd like to see it with a little bit of drag on the system.

Refresh us (briefly) on what you have replaced so far

Pull the alternator and PS belts as well with the t-cover off, and run it a minute or so (obviously while cold so it doesn't overheat) and post up another vid.

This really sounds like a dry bearing, but it's damn odd that it is this hard to isolate.

Agreed almost to high pitched to be a belt? sounds like a mechanical sweak to me

That sounds like a power steering belt tensioned too tightly. How much deflection do you have in each of your belts? Too much tension will cause a bearing in the PS pump or ALT to go bad.

Also take a couple drops of oil and put them on all the bearings of the idlers, tensioners, and pulleys. If one stops squeaking that is your problem child.

Idler pulley or tensioner pulley on the timing belt. Sounds just like my FWD TSi before I tore it down- the idler pulley (rear) on the timing belt system was dry as a bone when I popped the seals on the bearing.

I agree that sounds like a dry bearing in a tensioner or idler. I am at a loss though as to why it is present with both belts on, as they don't share any idlers or tensioners. Maybe both pulley bearings are bad for the a/c and the alt/wp?

Spin them without the belt. If either sounds like marbles ronning across the floor then replace them. There should be no play and the bearing should feel fluid and have a slight amount of drag.

It's pretty obvious in the no belts at all video that the water pump pulley is on wrong.

Make sure your water pump pulley isn't on wrong/backward, and that the little pin is lined up. Make sure all your accessories are tight, and the pulleys are properly aligned.

I thought I mentioned this two months ago...

Still waiting for my $10

Right-on. Missed that video above....the outer water pump pulley (for the alternator) is definitely backward.

Also disregard what I said above as the noise was obviously nonexistent in the video when you had all the accessory belts removed.

It is, how is it supposed to go on, please show me a picture.
