I have a 1991 Mitsubishi eclipse gsx auto and I have a squeaking noise that I can't figure out where it is coming from. I have replaced the alternator and harmonic balancer but still no luck. Also when I drive through a water puddle the noise goes away for a second. I will pay the person that figures out what the problem is $10 paypal.

why is belt conditioner (oil) bad, Ive done it to many of my cars without problems. If water stops the noise conditioner should help the problem. just like lotion helps dry skin conditioner helps dried belts. But as many including myself know im not an expert just throwing out some advice.

I don't believe in using anything to lubricate a squeaky belt. It's like putting grease in the tread of your tires to prevent them from screeching when you make fast turns. It may get rid of the sound, but it can have adverse side affects.

Well I still say take the $10 you were going to pay for the answer and buy some belt conditioner LOL. Good luck fixing your problem, not really sure why you offered money for help when that is what a forum is for, but that's up to you LOL.

Mine is making the exact same noise, just louder. I think mine is in my timing belt tensioner or idler pulley personally, but im going to look into the waterpump pulley rubbing the timing cover because I know the timing cover is cracked in more than 1 spot thanks to the previous owner of the car. If your getting it wet and it goes away for a second, I would def check for a rub tho. Cause that would cause the friction causing the squeak to stop long enough to stop the noise but come back as soon as the water is no longer lubricating the rub. My guess in your situation with replacing everything already is that your waterpump pulley is slightly off axis and rubbing your timing cover. Causing the noise tho. and dont want ## money, just some friendly advice.

Thanks for the tips guys, I will look into all of this tomorrow when I have more time to work on my car. Any more ideals anyone?

Start removing accessory belts until the problem goes away. Make a change, start the car...make another change, start the car. Keep in mind if you remove the water pump / alternator belt you shouldn't let the car idle for too long.

Take the belts off and run it and see if it goes away. If it does not its something timing belt related or possibly the crank sensor reluctor dragging.

What is the crank sensor reluctor?

Its the metal piece behind the crank pulley and timing cover that rotates and tells the crank sensor how fast the engine is turning. I have seen them become tweaked and slightly drag on the crank sensor.

Is this piece on a 1g dsm?

Um... Are you sure you posted to the right thread? This one is about a squeaky belt that gets quiet when he gets it wet.

Just a reminder, my paypal is [email protected]

Well if he knows it's a squeaky belt then what's the point of starting a thread asking what it is??? If you know it's a squeaky belt then fix it, replace all belts/tensioners and see if problem persists.

Well after today, I have a new input on it. Harmonic dampener coming apart. The rubber separating from the part that bolts to the crank and connects to the pulley itself.

Mine was squeaking a bit louder and the pulley is now laying in my driveway. But on the plus side, its not squeaking anymore......

Bent cam gear or Seperating timing belt idler pulley.

Please P.m. me for paypal LOL.

Take off the timing belt cover and check for belt movment, if it does, check for bent cam gear, if cam gear is fine, check timing belt idler pulley seperation.

Same problem... fixed it 1 week ago.

Okay, I started removing my belts and with all the belts off the noise goes away. The noise only comes on when my alternator/ water pump belt is on. Sense I just replaced the alternator a short while ago and the noise didn't go away it has to be something water pump related. I did replace the water pump when I replaced my timing belt but I bought an aftermarket pump from partsdinosaur so maybe I need an oem pump. Any ideals?

Got to AutoZone and have them test the alternator in their machine and see if it squeaks. That will rule it out.

To bad I don't have an autozone in my town. Is there anyway to test it with out removing it? It didn't make noise when I spun it by hand but either did the water pump.

Advanced or NAPA should have the same testing equipment. There is no way you can put a real load on that pulley with your hand.

No the alternator is not making noise I had it checked, Do you guys think I should buy a oem or aftermarket water pump?

Did you remove the power steering belt when you did the test and verify that it is not coming from there? Also you can test the water pump to see if it is making the noise. You will have to have a power drill of some sorts. Take the upper mount off and the alt and ps belts. Than you take the alternator belt and run it around the wp pulley and pull it thru the top. Than from there put the belt around the chuck on the drill and run the drill. You will have to keep it straight, it will probably come off the first few times.
