I have a 1991 Mitsubishi eclipse gsx auto and I have a squeaking noise that I can't figure out where it is coming from. I have replaced the alternator and harmonic balancer but still no luck. Also when I drive through a water puddle the noise goes away for a second. I will pay the person that figures out what the problem is $10 paypal.

Did you remove the power steering belt when you did the test and verify that it is not coming from there? Also you can test the water pump to see if it is making the noise. You will have to have a power drill of some sorts. Take the upper mount off and the alt and ps belts. Than you take the alternator belt and run it around the wp pulley and pull it thru the top. Than from there put the belt around the chuck on the drill and run the drill. You will have to keep it straight, it will probably come off the first few times.

Yes, I did remove the power steering belt, I will try that drill thing and let you know.

10 days later and still not fixed? Either youre not doing what people are telling you or we suck as a community.:hmm:

Well, between college and work I have not had time to fix it yet, I am 90% sure it's the water pump but I am going to make sure by using a drill tomorrow.

I'll see your $10 and raise you $10 that it's the idler or tensioner pulley bearing going bad. I can almost guarantee it. That's what they always sound like in any vehicle when they start to go bad.

Since you tend to think it's coming from the water pump area, I'm betting the idler pulley is the culprit.

Well being that the sounds goes away with the water pump and alternator belt off that would make you wrong. Alternator and water pump are the only possibilities, and the alternator has been tested (if you read the thread you would know this) so that leaves the water pump.

I am interested to see if you checked you crank pulley while the belts were off? Mine came apart on me and the squeaking stopped after I replaced it. The rubber in it just deteriorated and separated the pulley from the bolted on part. Its really easy to test, cause if the pulley moves at all with the belts off in an in and out motion, that thing is fried. Mine was bad enough that it kicked the belts and the pulley fell to the ground. So mine was a dead giveaway. Or you can pull the 4 12mm bolts and visually inspect it as its a hell of a lot easier than trying to dig into your timing set if you dont need to. Just a thought.

Have you checked your pulleys? That is what it sounds like to me. Either that or you might be rubbing on the lower timing cover.

Its your ac belt. It is rubbing on something. Sounds like the plastic lower timing belt cover. People have already stated this.

Yes, I under under stand something with the a/c is making noise but there is also another noise when the water pump belt is on with no a/c belt. Both noises go away when all the belts are off.

With the ac, it is the belt, try replacing it and adjusting it to the right tension. As for the water pump, isnt the pump driven by the timing belt? so you took the timing belt off? I dont think that is correct. I would try replacing the belts and adjusting them right, since it is fairly cheap and only makes noise when the belts are on.

No, the water pump is driven by the same belt as the alternator.

Yeah youre right. Dont know what i was thinking. I had the same problem and it was my ac belt hitting my timing belt cover, but you dont think its that, so im stumped.

Well I'm not throwing that out of the equation, that could be one of the noises my car is making. But I am also trying to figure out what is making the noise with my a/c belt off and my water pump belt on like in the video.

Wow, I have said to check that crank pulley multiple times now. No belts means no resistance on that crank pulley. an ac belt needs tq on the crank pulley to drive it, and the alt/water pump belt adds even more especially if the power steering pump is still connected. Pull the crank pulley off and inspect the rubber on it. If its cracked, damaged or missing in any spots thats your problem. It means the actually pulley surfaces are not moving at the same speed as the crank itself, and causing the rubber to basically melt in there. Pull the damn pulley off and unless it looks perfect its going to be your issue. Your ac may be hitting the timing cover, but you would see that on the belt side and surface, as well as looking down there. You have tried what everyone else suggests so far except what I have said, and I had the very same effing sound. Pull the pulley off and look, it takes like 5 min, a 12mm socket and a breaker bar to hold the crank in place. U dont even have to remove the big bolt, the pulley goes over that. Just remove the 4 bolts and take the damn pulley off and inspect it. Post some pictures while your at it. I am willing to bet that is your problem.

WHAT IS THE ONE PLACE IN COMMON WITH ALL THOSE PULLEYS WHEN A BELT IS ON EITHER THE AC OR THE WATER PUMP. THE FRIGGIN CRANK PULLEY. START THERE.

Thanks for the tip but I replaced the crankshaft pulley with a brand new oem one trying to get rid of the problem and it didn't help.

Is your timing cover cracked and rubbing on the inside? against the idler pulley or something? It seems awefully weird that with no belts other than timing hooked up and u get no noise, but you get noise no matter what accessory is connected... It was a brand new or used crank pulley.
