My new Best 14B Run

Rob is right. We are a lot lighter than him. Well, our car is. I personally weigh 100lbs more than Rob. ;) We will be adding a cage and scatter shield real soo now that we need it, but we have plenty more weight to be removed to make up for it.

The weight, as well as the track, helps with the 60s too as our best was 1.80 on the 11.95 pass with very small slicks and a stock diff. The pass before that one was a 1.85 and the 60s just go up from there. I'm afraid that we wont have as nice of a track surface when we go this friday as we did on Sunday. The night air and lack of sun will hurt us.

We wanted to upgrade the turbo on Goodwill fairly soon but after these results, we are probably going to push it a bit farther. It is a lot of fun to do so much with so little.
 
I can't wait till the dragstrip opens this weekend. I just finished swapping my entire set-up from my old Talon to the new Laser. I'm shooting for a 12.5 sec run this year. It seems the combo is a major diet, a good 60', and high boost levels.
How many of you guys are using an AFC to tune? What about fuel system? I find it hard to believe that those of you that are running 20+ psi are on a stock fuel pump and injectors. That would go against everything I've read on ALL forums about "safe" boost levels. I almost feel like I have too many mods to be in the fastest 14B game. My mods are listed in my profile but I switched back to the 1G MAF. I think I want to keep my set-up as close to stock as I can this year.

I was seriously considering selling the Talon...after brainstorming for months...it's just not replaceable with anything that could satisfy.
Do you mean getting rid of Talon for a Laser or getting rid of Talon for different manufacturer? How could you give up such a good love-hate relationship.

I'm running 21psi on the 14b(no porting) with:
GM3.5"MAF, MAF-T,
Stock 450's,
stock fuel rail,
stock fuel pressure regulator,
stock pump(rewired).
No AFC here or datalogger of any kind, I just tune for the correct 02 voltage at WOT. I know it is not the norm, but it has netted me numbers that are undisputable.

I think on the street i get a little more respect for the times i've done with my car because from the inside and out it apears to have just back seats and seatbelts removed. BTW: anyone see my post on Machv.com dsm message board? A guy responded that i'm probobaly using a 16g and that he doesn't belive that a 1g could run 12's on a stock turbo. Well now he knows, and knowing is half the battle. :dsm:

everyone that hears that you think the "extra mods" you have do nothing for the 14b....laughs. I mean, no balance shafts and higher comp alone are significant. Not to mention you tune with full stand alone, another huge advantage. Won't get into this again, but, no matter what you say....you have distinct advantages, and lots of them......studderbox launch for instance.

I've added a ton of similar mods to my 14b powered car. On the street they make a difference, but on the drag strip most of them don't do crap.

Not to mention the fact that Leon's not even using a full standalone. Strike 2.

Nothing wrong with you having a new motor every year, but to keep building motors to claim records....

I wasn't going to say anything until this came up. You're probably better off NOT insulting the fastest DSM club in the country as a whole.

Leon and I disagree about a LOT of things when it comes to these cars. Regardless of that, he sure as hell knows what he is doing, and I think that shows by the fact that the fastest time he has run on EVERY TURBO he has ever run is faster than any of yours. Of, that's right, you've never run anything but a 14b.

Will you honestly just stop whining? If you want to show him up, go and beat his time. End of story.
 
I don't think Phil is mad that he isn't the fastest, but that Leon was give much more credit for having the fastest, while phil's was almost as fast with much less work done to it. Either way, this isn't my arguement i'm happy w/ what i've ran and have in no way insulted anyone that hasn't done the same to me.

Whining? I see you up here whining about me. I beat Leon's time before, I can beat it again. I'll say again that the only thing similar in my set-up to Leon's is the turbo. I'm running an original engine with original miles, 15 years old, my 14b has never left the car, oil and coolant lines never disconnected. Yep, never ran anything but the 14b, and the problem with this is what? This is a thread about the 14b potential.....

Trav-definitely not mad that Leon is quicker..he SHOULD be quicker, thanks for backin me though :thumb: I held the record at one time and that's all that matters...I met a goal...with little investment and modification.

The fact that you apologised once in this thread doesn't mean very much to me. This is certainly not the first time something like this has happened.

You certainly have done some impressive things with that car, considering how it is set up.
 
Yes this has gotten back on track. Most of the people posting on this thread are knowlegeable 14b users and have a decent level of maturity. It started w/people congradulating me on my new best, then people giving suggestions and then somehow became an ego war. I'm sure everyone is at a point now that they are happy with their 14b's performance but if you do get a new best i'm sure everyone would love to see it. Thats' why i started this thread. As leon said i got a little off topic, but with the 14b drama it has brought all of the 14b topdogs to the same thread where we can talk/argue and at the same time give tips or suggestions. I'm glad i could get everyones input and suggestions and i appriciate the compliments on my times it keeps me trying.

Yes but it will take more work w/ a 2g concidering the 2g heads and intake manifolds don't flow as much. And you might have to take out more weight than you would fine to be comfortable. Your car can do it, just depends on how drastic you want to go with the weight.

It will take some suspension tweeking and some good driving with a good 60' time aswell.

Getting a 1g head with the Intake Manifold would also help you flow the numbers in the 2G as stated.:thumb:
 
Friday night 4/2/04

Night started out good, but it was down hill from there.

We still cannot get this turbo to boost over 18 psi. Also, most of the time it falls to 16 psi from about 5000 rpm on up. I don't know if it's a bad intake leak, bad wastegate flapper or turbine housing ir just a bad 14b. It doesn't use oil and there is VERY minimal shaft play, but it won't make more than 18psi even with the flapper tied shut and no boost signal on the wastegate actuator.

Anyway... First run off the trailer. Here's the slip.

60' - 1.794
330' - 5.076
1/8 - 7.729
1/8 - 92.02 mph
1000' - 10.014
1/4 - 11.929
1/4 116.39 mph

60s got bad fast and ended up with a bunch of 12.2-12.3 slips. Even got a new best mph. 117.23 Must have held 18 psi for a few extra rpm. Guess we will have to take a better look at it in the near future.
 
Last time i went to the track with some C16 i had the boost cranked to 24, but by the higher rpms it was holding around 20. Are you using a 7cm turbine housing? Also that day i was running open DP, not sure if that helped the boost up?? Just my experience, but normaly the boost will go around 22when set there and fall to 18.

The setup is ported on the turbine and compressor housings and running through a 3" open downpipe and O2 eliminator. It hits 18 psi for a second right at 3500 rpm and then drops to 16psi from 4500 to redline. Vaccuum hose DISCONNECTED from the actuator. I'm running 110 leaded with ~15 Deg. base timing, 20 on the logger. No knock at all.

We have plenty of stuff to go over on the car. I have another 14b lined up if I need it. We are taking a break for a couple weeks and then will be back at it again.
 
Get that Turbo fixed so you can hold 20 PSI...I wanna see 120 mph on the 14b :thumb:

Congrats on the 60' BTW most AWD guy's (including myself) can't even hit 1.7's
