I just realized you're running a '90. Have you considered even switching to the 91-up cams? That alone should help. The FFWD DKS cams are also a cheap alternative and the FP1s are only $430 a pair. Why are you retiring after this year?

I never new the 91 and up cam was more aggressive....hmm. FFWD???? Have not heard of them either. That's true FPs are only $430--that is a good deal and I have had good dealings with FP in the past, and recently.

As far as retiring goes: As much as people know me as an avid DSM drag racer, my true passion is with road racing and more of my skill is in driving corners believe it or not. I mean, I think I'm a good drag racer, but I'm a better road racer, and I have not been on the road course in over ten years. I do have the 90 Archer Talon coming in late March and obviously that is a dedicated Road Race car, but, I don't think I will drive it as hard as my own car because it is a piece of DSM history. Basically, I have been busy converting my talon to a road racer with all the suspension and whatnot. I will say that there is a chance I will keep my AWD for the strip, and use the Archer car for the road course so I can have the best of both worlds, but I am a little burnt on the drags it seems.....nothing another trip down the 1320 wont take care of, right???:D My talon is still registered and insured for street use, but aside for the miles I drove to go to the emissions station the total mileage on the car for 06 was 26! Not to mention it failed emissions which of course has always been a pain to deal with. I may not renew my reg this time and take the car off the street and make it a full on racer. Truthfully it is that, just with a license plate on the back. I do want to be able to take that next step and be able to run more agressive set-ups. I have always kept my basic set-up so that I can still run the streets with ease. But with such tight standards on emissions now, it makes it tough. The only advantage is that in another 6-7 years I can re-register the car as and antique!!!LOL and then there's no emissions to worry about!!!!

And, I have my EVO for the street. I think I don't have as much a need for the Talon on the street now. If I didn't have the EVO I think I would be bummed about not having that street trim DSM, ya know?

So, it is all still up in the air, but if I do carry out my intentions, or Joe keeps pounding "red lasers rule":tease: into my head, maybe, there's a chance that the Talon stays a drag car.

That's the story.

Auto-x is extremely easy to get into, at least on a non-competitive local level just for fun. Any car can run as long as it passes basic tech inspection, the people are friendly and helpful to newbies, and it's only 30-40 bucks for a day. Just read a few "Intro to auto-x" guides on the internet for some helpful tips and sign up for one. I just noticed that a local club is running an Auto-x school for beginners with more seat time and lots of instruction, so I'm going to be doing that come March 11, but you can go out to any event and get help and advice if you're humble and polite in asking the fast people for it.

Correction, it's the '93-up exhaust cam that's different:

Your plans sound like fun. I'd love to get into road racing or auto-x, but there's alot more time and expense involved. A couple locals are getting more into it, maybe I'll tag along to some events this year.

ok...93 makes sense.......I'd just opt for a new set either way. I actually run time trials for the first time this year on March 24, but I'll run the EVO this time. Auto-X I go watch but never really had an interest in running. I'd rather be on the road course. I know it can improve on skills for sure.

FWIW my 92 has the D/C cam combo, which is theoretically the best OEM cam combo. What that's worth in real-world power numbers, I have no idea.

The DKS cams are regrinds to HKS specs. From what I've read on them people have been happy with them, so I'd buy those before I paid HKS prices. Several locals tried the FP1s on some of the fastest 14b and 16g cars around and really liked them, so if I was building a car specifically to run a 14b or 16g turbo I'd go for the FP1s. Maybe even the 1x's, if I had the money and the inclination to install upgraded springs. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but the 1x's have the same .50 to .50 duration, just higher valve acceleration and longer peak lift duration, right? So in theory they should work like 1's with these small turbos, only better.
