My new Best 14B Run

First-Leon--I stand corrected on that then...but, if you remember, a while back I asked you if you were running open exhaust, and rather than answer me with a yes or no, you replied with something like," what's it matter anyway." I guess assuming is a bad thing.

Trav--I have never run an open pipe, so I can't comment on that. I can say that I went 12.02 on a 2.5" DP, and 12.00 on a 3" so I would say there's no gain on the 14b there. But, going full open mayproduce some sort of gain, at the minimum, like you said, weight savings.

Yeah, that is a little low on your comp there...just add boost!!

My comp last time I checked was:

150 148 155 160

I think the 8.5:1 cars grab 170-180 or so?

I have held 20psi or so in 3rd no prob, but I never shift at or above redline......except for the 1-2 cuz it spools so fast....maybe I'll try winding it out more next time at the strip...I shift out around 6400-6700 or so, my power peak is 5950 and TQ peak is 3450.

I'll try some different points on May 21 and let you know what I find....it's always been the quicker into the next gear with no bog has produced the quickest ET's......

Nope, I can’t say that remember saying that. Nor, does it sound like something that I would say… I never keep any secrets from anyone. I simply do not have anything “special” to keep a secret :).

So would you recomend shifting from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th below 7k rpm? You think my e/t would improve if i shifted into 3rd and 4th around 6700 rpms intstead of 7300? Also about how high do you shift into 2nd and third? I will trying slaming it in 2nd harded but last time i ran, it felt like it bogged once i got it in to second gear and the turbo had to spool up. Should i try taking the revs past 7 into 2nd and less into 3rd and 4th? Thanks this may help alot!

I'm curious too, all my shifts are definetely in the red, bad part is if I'm not on my shifts it bounces off the rev limiter and cost me valuable time.

Travis, another one for you. what kind of wheels you running? I'm an Autocrosser that just happens to do well at the drag strip. So I run big 18 X 8 rims with 225/40/18 falken ziex street tires. I'm sure smaller wheels would net me some gains, but then I also run all kinds of other goodies for AutoXing, hence my heavy weight, huge swaybars, strut tower bars, heavy duty Teins, camber plates, Huge 13" brake rotors with dual piston calipers...blah blah blah. So I'm not getting rid of any of that for weight savings sake. but would be willing to invest into a super-lite weight track only set of wheels and tires.

Thanks again,
Jose

Leon......that was not verbatim...but, it was something to that effect. No big deal....but I never got a straight answer so I just assumed you ran open.

Trav--it's possible shifting out earlier would help you, then it's possible if I shift out later it would help me, but, like I said, in my experience, shifting earlier has helped...the 14b does not make power in the red...

I think it's possible that shifting around 6700 would be better than higher, but, I could be wrong Trav....maybe shifting higher like you drops to a better place in the band in the next gear, but, your car might not have the same band as mine. Here's how my run goes:

Launch=5400-5700rpm
1-2=7000
2-3=6600-6700
3-4=6500-6700

Now, I have shifted too soon out of 2nd and the car falls on its face, still runs 12.3-12.4 but that's how I have found what I have thought was the perfect shift point. Next time you are at the strip, find out where you shift to 4th gear, I hit 4th gear at or just before the 1/8 mile. My 1/8 ET is 7.67@90, Leon is 7.55@92 for your info.

That's about it...by the way Jose, your car sounds killer!!!

I am using the stock and heavy 93 tsi wheels. With Michelin 205/50/16 tires, run around 27psi at the track "in the tires that is" I would like to get a set for racing, light wheels are cheap. I wouldn't mind throwing on some 15" racing wheels w/ some drag radials :thumb:

Trav---lighter wheels will definitely help...the DSM's have a ton of unsprung weight...stock wheels are about 26 lbs. My first set of aftermarket wheels wer 16 a piece, so 40 lbs. total savings and it was noticeable. My current 16" Racing Hart CP035's are about 10.2 lbs a piece...........almost 64 lbs weight savings just from a wheel swap, if you want cheap and light...Kosei K1 is a great wheel. Going to a 15 is a thought, maybe for a little more sidewall as well, but the Volk TE37 15" is no lighter than my RH CP035 in 16"....there would be a savings on the tire though.......Sean at Extreme's wheel/slick combo weighs in at 24.8lbs. total....I have not weighed mine yet........for comparison's sake the 17" wheel/tire combo on the Focus weighed in at 37.2lbs. I imagine the Talon combo would be around 28-30lbs. Anyway.......give it a try.

Lighter wheels is definately on my list of stuff to get soon as with a CF hood "saves 30 pounds i think" and a racing seat for just at the track. My friiend is running FD RX7 wheels on his 1g i think they are 13pounds a peice, but i'm wondering if i'm going to get new wheels should i get 15"s or 16"s for the track. Would it be worth it to buy a set of BFG Drag radials or am i just asking for trouble? With my truck payment i don't have alot of money for my talon, but i don't want to put some heavy wheels on if i buy another set. How much a wheel are yours Phil and what about those Koni's. Also how wide are they? I know the rx7 wheels are a little wider too. One last question, with the much lighter wheels, is wheel spin a big problem, do you launch lower or just slip the clutch more? I still have a 2100 clutch so i might have to up that soon to.
Thanks, now lets see if you can answer all of those
Travis

I just read the rx7 wheels are 15pounds a peice at 16X8" wide, would it be retarded to put my 205/50/16 michelins on a set of these, i could probobaly pick up a set of the wheels sooner or later but my tires are good just not quite as wide as the 225 rx7 stockers. Thanks guys.
Travis

Why would that bring trouble? We are getting way off topic here, but sticky tires reduce wheel hop, the #1 reason for drivetrain failures... So if anything, sticky tires will protect your drivetrain!

But you still have to use your head, you can still get carried away and wheel hop sticky tire (you just have to push them harder). And wheel hop on sticky tires can be more damaging. Fortunately, it is much easier to stay away from wheel hop with stickier tires.

Sorry for the off topic, but you guys are the ones that i really need to talk to about everything for my car to get it set up for best 14b setup. Where can i get some DRadials and which one, and whats an expected price for 225,235/50/16. Looks like new wheels and rubber will be pretty expensive, its gunna be hard to invest about $800 w/o spending in on a 50 trim

Trav--I run the Nitto Drags......in warmer weather.....70 degress plus or so, they stick well, anything below that and I spin them liike crazy...depends on track prep as well......the BF Drag is a much stickier tire.

You still run low 12's in 70+ degree weather? Your stock SMIC must have been handcrafted from god himself  Well i realize that lighter wheels is going to be the next thing to shave alot of weight off my 14b car, and it appears that my 205michellins' wouldn't be a good size to go with. Guess i'll save my money and try to pick up some cheap RX7 wheels and then decide on radials or drag's. Well i took off the catback and i'm going to Capitol in a couple hours to race. Spliting some C16 w/ my buddy, first time using C16 hopefully works good for me. I'm gunna crank down on the MBC and do a quick couple test pulls and see if i get any knock at 21+psi. Phil did you race your car for the last time on the 14b?
Artictsi, HOLLY 60' BATMAN, what's the secret "i was leaning toward the highly tuned autocross suspension????OMG "

Well after reading so much about you, leon r, and phil b running 21+psi on the 14b i went for it myself, i ahd previously limited myself to 19psi but went with 21 this time and have started to remove weight from the car, about 90-100 lbs more to go then off to a 1/4 mile drag I go. Plus that 1.63 60 feet is my personal best on the car. I have run a handful of 1.69's but never a 1.63, must be coming from the weight reduction. still not bad for a 18 x 8 rim with 225/40/18 falken ziex street tires :D

keep-a-spool'n that 14b!

Trav--I race it the last time on the 14b on May 21st......

but, stuff like this makes me want to run it longer...I am now #3 all time on the 14b.

http://www.94tsiawd.com/Goodwill.html

117mph on the 14.....

I gotta get this guy and Leon now.......:thumb:

what do you think of that???

How did it go at Capitol??

Phil1320

ps- I've gone 12.09@111 in 85 degrees.....:D

OMFG!!! 117 on a 14b JESUS! Then again, that thing was STRIPPPPPPPPED. My car still apears to have full interior - the back seats. I guess they got the FWD to hook w/ the et drags and after they launched the lightweight FWD just PULLED. This car kinda upsets me now, but i guess if i wanted to make my car a Drag only car i could try it, but i want to drive my car around town too. Well went to capitol and got another new personal best on my 'ol 14B. For some reason, i can not launch my car w/ the new setup. My best 60' was a horrible 1.80 but my new best e/t was improved to a 12.42 @ 110.4. I came to the track today hoping to get atleast a 12.49 so i was happy with this. Hope this new best is impressive enough for the people on this thread reading it, but i was pissed about my launching, if i would have done better the car had a high 12.2 in her, but i couldnt' drive it:cry: Well, till next times, i'm planning on more weight removal and still dynoing at EM on April 17th. I weighed my car today and with out me it was aprrox.2780, with me aprox 2980. The car was noisy as hell w/ open DP and the C16 seemed nice. Boost was high but falling off to 20psi. Set about 24psi. So other than that new 11.95 14b car, who else is still running a 14b turbo below 12.5, i know you and Leon have moved on but are still the record holders. Thanks for the suport guys, i love seeing my camaro buddy tell all of his friends at the track that its stock turbo OMG

Thanks, the tires are decent, the rims are heavy and as far as fastest on least mods on this board...i think PHIL B. Takes the cake:thumb: Thanks man, it only gets better from here.
Travis

i think phil went 12.0 on stock, IC, 450's, internals, etc....Phil?
With stock 450's IC and ICpipes i gave up at 12.74 and desided it was time to go faster. My mods are in my profile. Phil's list is shorter probobaly but he still manages to run 12.002 = DRIVER :thumb:

I just looked at your mods list, didn't realize you had the supra sidemount and 550's, ahh well maybe the fastest with the least amount of weight reduction. ;)
