Didn't know that you were using 14b's to break in your new modded engines. Guess you might be breaking your own record in the future. Well i wasn't trying to mess with a 11.8 but maybe try to rank in the stock motor 14b list :D
Travis

KPWSerpiente---thanks, that was probably the guy I was thinking of at 12.1..........

yeah...Trav--moved on? Not quite yet. I did just say I'm running the 14 in May right? I will move on for sure at some point this year, but maybe if I roast my motor at some point I'll build one, toss the 14 back on and take advantage of the advantages that Leon has....no balance shafts, compression, lighter rods/pistons, balanced assembly, headwork, cams, etc. I guess Leon will run the 14b once a year as he seems to build a new motor at least once year.

Trav--I ran [email protected] with best MPH at 113.17 blowing through stock turbo outlet elbow, I/C, piping, injectors, no fuel control, 1g maf....
thanks again for the props!!!! Props to you on 12.42!!!! I'm really impressed...don't worry about you're 60's as much....they'll drop.....what rpm are you launching at? tire spin?

Trav:

the 12.1 car listed above, actively that might be it..

Greg Horn 12.40..you almost got him
Jerry Ledford 12.30
Jeff Carpenter 12.27
Doug Derby 12.17

none of these are active 14b cars, so you are maybe #5 active......

Phil

I think that you will find those mods to be wasted on a 14b…

BTW forged pistons and rods are heavier than stockers. That is not a good mod for a 14b. As I said before, small rods with 2G pistons are the best 14b engine components.

>I guess Leon will run the 14b once a year as he seems to build a new motor at least once year.

You saying it like there is something wrong with this :).

>none of these are active 14b cars, so you are maybe #4 active......

So now there is a sub-category of “active 14b cars”? What are the qualifications? I would like to find out if I am “active” or an “alumnus” :).

Phil, I'll be making a 1/4 pass by the end of april. just have some more fat to trim from the car and I will be ready to be added to your elite list of 14b beasts. though mine will never bee as gutted as that "project goodwill" 1G that ran and 11.9. That thing did not even have a dash! just nuts. definetly not a daily driver nor street legal like my autoxing 1G. So If I can hit low low 12's on a daily driver street legal, with a/c and all my power-bells and whistles plus all my autocross gear I will be pleased. Well see how it goes.

I just keep using my local 1/8th dragstrip to practice, I figure if i get my 1/8th down to 7.7-7.8 i should be about there. I ran 7.901 @ 87+ this past weekend with raising the boost and shifting right about where you said you were phil. does seem to help. I never let it hit red. shifter around 67-6900. I was able to shave over 1/10th of my previous best in the 1/8th! Amazing what happens when you get all of us talking.

Nothing like quality guys helping each other out, I tip my hat to you Phil, Leon, Travis

Leon - first, I wouldn't say there's two lists, I was just giving Travis an idea of where he stands on the ladder. Ok, so aftermarket rods and pistons are heavier than stock.......big deal, everyone that hears that you think the "extra mods" you have do nothing for the 14b....laughs. I mean, no balance shafts and higher comp alone are significant. Not to mention you tune with full stand alone, another huge advantage. Won't get into this again, but, no matter what you say....you have distinct advantages, and lots of them......studderbox launch for instance.

Nothing wrong with you having a new motor every year, but to keep building motors to claim records....again, the mods are there wether or not they are doing anything. And, you write in your post that you would never say certain things and that it is not your style, well, Leon, you don't come off as the most friendly person, maybe around your NEDSM worshippers. But, at the KTR dyno day, you pulled up, I was sitting in my Talon, which I know you didn't mistake for anyone else, and walked right by...and then hardly said a word the whole time I was there, not to mention, that dyno day was not worth it at all and Ami or whatever his name is looked at my AFC2 like he saw a ghost........4 runs in 5 minutes time and I was pulled off the dyno. Before this you were very friendly online until the dyno day. So, whatever, you hold the all-time 14b record........but, maybe not for long.

Jose---good job on the 7.90 1/8 mile...glad I could help you on that and good luck in the 1/4...that should net 12.5 or so......keep me updated.

Phil1320

I was launching at about 5 and i think it was spinning but it was kinda hard to tell. Thanks again man, i probobaly would have never tried to come this far with the 14b if i didn't see your car dyno at Altered. I still have alot of weight to drop and the 60' to work on.
Leon,
Didn't want to say you retired the 14b, but i thought that you weren't using it anymore since the last time i saw your car it was doing 10's. Congrats by the way.
I might never hold any of the 14b records but this is much better than i ever planned on doing. When i got my car i said i wanted to run mid to high 12's. Already i'm happy with my car, but now i would like to run a consistent high 11 "once i upgrade my turbo".
I'm still not sure on how much more junk i'll pull out of my car to compete with you 14b guys, i want the car to fell and appear somewhat like a normal car, not like a drag monster.
I wonder if running the open DP helped at all? I'm going to run next time with the 2.5" catback installed back on the car. BTW: The only internals i have done to my car are valve seals
Travis:laugh:

Hey everyone, Im one of the 2 people who are involved in the Goodwill car. Glad to hear its being seen and talked about. Sorry to bump ya down the list Phil, I was always amazed to hear about your success with your car on the 14B, and never thought id be where i am, faster then you. :p Its all in fun tho. We're going for the gold tho, and hopefully to take the top of the list! Im sure Joe will chime in here soon about the car. Its just been so much fun. If ya want to put a face to the name. Im the one who ya see most of in the video, working on the car and driving. Joe was the first person to be seen driving the car after fixing the ECU. Im still on a "high" with the run we made in the car, and can't wait to get it back on the track. Goodjob on the run Travis, and hope ya improve it some more in the future.

Hey everyone. Other half of Project Goodwill here. Just wanted to check in and say hey.

We did well so far but Rob H from Orlando has us beat with an 11.93 @ 119. Yes, thats on a 14b in a FWD car thats significantly heavier than ours.

It's nice to go this fast for under $3200 like we have. My old AWD had at least 5 times that into it, plus the cost of the mint condition car, and we are creeping up on my best in that car.

Competition is getting pretty stiff. I see the shit talking commencing and I have to say one thing.

Leon is a really nice guy. I was visiting the New England area back a few years ago and Leon made it a point to notice my FL tag and come to my window. "Joe?" he asked. He gave me some friendly advise, back when I was running 13s, and was very pleasant. Just my expirience with him.

Have fun guys.

Mike--thanks for the props........no biggie on bumping me down the list, I give your car serious props........it's crazy. I wish I never sold my '90 Laser FWD.....I knew the potential...hollow cat, K&N, 19psi, 170k original miles went [email protected] with a 2.37 short time. That was a fun car, but it needed so much maintenance, I let it go. I am currently looking for another one. I really like the basic look of the Laser, no spoilers and all that, used to surprise so many people that thought it was just junk, mainly those Benz and Bimmer drivers. So, I think it is awesome that you have done what you've done.....and now another 11.9 second FWD...wow! From 2nd to 4th in a few days......I would like to be able to run year round like you guys...I might race 3 times a year. If I could devote more time to the cause it would help, but that's life. I'll make it a point to get racing more often this year, but I also run at Lime Rock, the road course here in CT in another one of my cars, so the DSM is not my only interest, although, definitely the one I'm most passionate about.

Joe, nice to talk to you as well. As far as shit-talking or anything of that nature......I guess you can call it like you see it. Contrary to what anyone says, Leon included, there is obvious tension created by past instances related to my accomplishments vs. his. I never said Leon was not a pleasant person, although, he has claimed that I have insulted his character, but, like you say, its your experience with him. Everyone's experience is different. Hey, we've been opponents in this 14b thing, and I finally met the goal I set 7 years ago, to hold the 14b record, and I did for about 5 months.....and that was at 12.02 with hardly having any mods at all. That's how this all started. Leon's record was 12.053. I ran 12.052 to beat the record by one one-thousandth, but, my next and last run of that night was 12.02. I didn't expect to hold it forever, and I have fueled many people on this turbo.

Hats off to you two and the guy from Orlando, I'm am finally glad to see some fast FWD DSM's......even if you guys are out in front of me :thumb: So, keep chippin away, cuz I'm comin..........now I have 3 reasons, not one!!!!!!!!!

Phil1320

Gooberlog,

Sorry to highjack your thread like this, but I need to address a couple of things…

Phil,

I must grab you the wrong way, as for some reason, you interpret anything I say or do negatively. Well, I guess we are all entitled to our opinions, no matter how skewed they might be. Frankly, I could care less what you say about me (as long as you do not MISQUOTE me or misrepresent what mods I have), but you were insulting to the New England DSMers, and that is just not right…

I have been trying to be nice to you, despite your frequent insults, and bent over backwards to get you into our dyno day, but I think that I am done with it…

> Not to mention you tune with full stand alone, another huge advantage.

Sure, it would be… The problem is that I have NEVER ran a stand alone fuel management system… Perhaps you should stop listing my mods, as it appears that you are not very familiar with my car.

>but to keep building motors to claim records....again

I have already told you what kind of motor would do best with 14b turbo… What I am building is not IT!

>And, you write in your post that you would never say certain things and
>that it is not your style

When you quote someone, IT MUST BE something that they said VERBATIM.

>But, at the KTR dyno day, you pulled up, I was sitting in my Talon, which I
>know you didn't mistake for anyone else, and walked right by...and then hardly
>said a word the whole time I was there

Has it accrued to you that, it has been 3+ years since I saw you and I didn’t recognize you? Probably not, as you tend to jump on the negatives…

>not to mention, that dyno day was not worth it at all and Ami or whatever his
>name is looked at my AFC2 like he saw a ghost........4 runs in 5 minutes time
>and I was pulled off the dyno.

I am not a big fan of DynoDynamics dyno and prefere 2WD DynoJets, I only organized that even to assist all the guys without the ability to switch to FWD as easy as I can, but … You payed $68 for 2 runs on 4x4 dyno, you got at least 4 runs and could have gotten more, if … you kept improving. Those guys were extra nice to us, allowing us to make much more passes than what we have paid for. But they weren’t supposed to tune your car! Some guys got 15+ runs because they kept making more and more power. But all the tuning was up to YOU!!! That might explain why he looked at your SAFC as if he saw a ghost.

>Didn't want to say you retired the 14b, but i thought that you weren't using
>it anymore since the last time i saw your car it was doing 10's.

Do not worry about it, I know that what I do is not a common thing, so a lot of people make the same mistake.

>Congrats by the way.

Thanks!

>I wonder if running the open DP helped at all?

I know that running open 3” DP helped on my GT-13 turbo, I picked up ~2mph doing it. Though, interestedly enough, it didn’t show any improvement on a dyno . But I have a hard time believing it would make as much of a difference on a 14b. Maybe, I will give it a try :).

..............I never meant to insult the NEDSMr's.....I'll leave it at that for now........

Phil1320

Jeff,
Was that steering rack on a junkyard car? If its still there i wouldn't mind if you PMed me some details. Thanks for looking out for a brother.
Project Goodwill GUYS, You both have done an awesome acomplishment on you times. I think if i totaly "mutilated jk" my car i could drop a few tenths off of my ET, but i dont' want my car too look quite as hardcore as yours does. I'm shooting for a low 12 on the 14b but i will be happy to end up with a 12.2. It seems the real key to a fast 14b car is WEIGHT and 60'. Phil has proven that a light car doesn't need alot of power to put down low numbers and Goodwill FWD proved a light a$$ car can go fast w/o too much power too. BTW, nice 60' for a FWD car!
Is there any conformation on the 12.1 @112 AWD talon purlple and grey one. Guess that puts me up to about spot 9 or 10.
Thanks for the props guys, you guys know its not easy, just alot of tinkering, hoping some dynoing will help some too.
Travis :talon:

Leon---I'll agree that you apparently "grab me the wrong way."

Since I can't quite get straight what exactly your combination of mods is when you run the 14b, why not list those mods here, or a link that points to that set-up. I understood stand alone, no shame in admitting being wrong.

As far as KTR...yes, I should have been tuning......

And yes, it's been a long time since we saw each other before that day, I just thought you knew my car.....it's not mistakeable, kinda like your neon green.......since offense is being taken, I'll up an apology here to all offended and leave the BS for the track. I wouldn't want to be the bad apple around here, although I'm known to be very aggressive, negative as you call it Leon.

Good luck to all 14b racers this year.

-Phil1320

Hello! It's "that guy from Orlando"

I had a great weekend at the track. The tin can is really starting to show some promise. I want to thank you Phil for providing me the motivation to go further with a 14b than I thought was possible.

Some details on my setup:

Car weighs ~2350 with me in the seat. The car is 100% 11 second legal
The car still has all the glass and steel body
I am still on the original 112,9xx mile shortblock and Turbo

The 11.93 run was on a sub-par 1.885 60ft (7.81 at 93.xx 1/8th mile).

Hopefully, there will be better numbers in the future.

Here is a pic taken on Sunday of the car

You must be logged in to view this image or video.

Hopefully, there will be a 14b match race coming up between myself and the Goodwill guys in the future:D

Best of luck to all of you!

Excellent, congratulations..All in a fwd as well. But how the hell did you get your car that light without CF/fiberglass, lexan etc. Congrats again.

Rob-- sorry abut the "guy from Orlando" thing.....I didn't know you or thought I didn't.......your name does sound very familiar though.

Congrats on the [email protected] is some killer mph. I'm glad I was able to provide some motivation for you and the Laser. That's the type of thing that keeps me into the DSM's, and keeps me running the 14b when there's a FP turbo ready to bolt on. I think you and the Goodwill guys have done awesome, not to mention I love the 90-91 Laser If you read above, I ended up letting mine go, at least one of my buds has it, so I see it around....but I am searching for another one..I'll swap my current Talon set-up to it when I finally bolt the FP on.

Ironic that you and the Goodwill crew are now motivating me:thumb:
It would be cool to see you guys run against one another, so close, 11.93-11.95. Keep me posted!

I was seriously considering selling the Talon...after brainstorming for months...it's just not replaceable with anything that could satisfy.

So, good luck besting the 11.93!

By the way, what is your best 60' with that beast?

Talk to you soon,

Phil1320

Phil, the best 60ft to date has been a 1.80 (which was on my first run in 6 months on Friday night). This was at Orlando speedworld. On the exact same tuneup I could only run 12.30's there last year (when I pulled the 12.16 at Gainesville). I think there is much room for improvement on a better track.

As far as weight reduction, It take alot of time to systematically eliminate everything you don't need. Starting out with a Laser is an advantage. The car still has the stock Fuel tank, dash and gauge cluster. I'm 100% sure the Goodwill guys are lighter than me, for now that is ;)

Best of luck to everyone persuing fast 14b times. It really makes those guys with 20G (and Larger) turbos bang their heads when they read about stuff like this.

..and I like it that way!:thumb:
