I haven't started a build journal on here but I have a thread going on another site. I will basically be copying and pasting what ive posted there so far and then updating from there. Let me know what you guys think and feel free to ask any questions
Here is the story of my newest DSM. My 1990 Eclipse GSX. First off, Id like to tell you about how I found the car in the first place. Then I will explain the actual trip to go get the car
It all started in the chat one day when I was talking to Scoot and I was telling him about how I was searching for a clean, 5spd, AWD shell. Scoot tells me he knows where one is and sends me a link to a NC craigslist listing. I looked at the pics on the listing and the car looked pretty solid. Scoot lived about 40 minutes from the guy and offered to do me a HUGE favor and and drive down and take a look at the car for me. He goes down the next day and talks to the guy, checks out the car for me, and sends me some pics. The car was amazingly solid. There was literally no rust on the car. The brake line fittings inside the wheels were still shiny. The guy tells Scoot he just wants it out of the driveway and he will take $200 for it. I immediately paypal'ed the guy $200 and started looking for car shipping companies. Robert(the guy that sold me the car) was really willing to work with me on holding the car until i could get it shipped or come pic it up. After about a week and a half of waiting for a car shipper to get back to me I decided I was just going to get it myself. This is where the story really gets interesting....
I don't own a truck or a trailer so first things first I have to find somebody willing to loan me a truck and trailer to take on a 1400 mile round trip adventure. I talked to my friends dad and he says I can take the excursion and his flatbed trailer. Ok cool, I have a truck and trailor lined up, now I just have to go get it.
So, I talk to Slim and we decide that we will go pick it up on Sunday, August 29th 2010. I had to work on the Saturday before that and I got off at 9pm. I went home, packed a bag, drove to my friends house, and got the truck and trailer. 10pm I drive over to slims house to pick him up and start the adventure. After messing with the trailer brake lights and checking the tires and whatnot we finally get on the road around 11pm. I have the first driving shift. So we get on the turnpike and get cruising. First fuel stop costs me $92. Wow. So all is going smoothly until the first close encounter happens in WV. Doing about 70mph on the highway I split a pack of 3 deer standing in the road. That got my heart pumping a little. All is well again until we get to NC. I drove all the way to NC and as we got into NC the fog was REALLY thick. Our next exit is blocked off with cop cars and flares... hmm. So we go to the next exit and turn around and come back to get off. We find out the reason the exit was blocked off was there was a minimum of a 10 car pile up and 1 lady was killed in the accident. They believe she came across the median and hit a semi head on. After we get through the accident Slim is feeling pretty rough from some bad milk he bought and drank at the last rest stop. He was in the passenger seat "relieving" himself into a ziplock bag which made me feel like doing the same:th_thumbsdownsmiley but at the same time it was pretty funny and Slim felt much better afterwards
. At the next rest stop Im feeling really rough and Slim takes over the driving. He drives the rest of the way to Roberts house wich really helped me out so I could lay in the back and get feeling better.
We get to Roberts house and check the car out for the first time. Not perfect but no rust and pretty straight. Cool, just what I was looking for. Lets get it loaded up. After using the janky ass come along I was supplied and getting it on the trailor this is what she looked like.

We got the car loaded up at 1:30 on Sunday and when we are getting ready to leave we realize one of the tires is flat on the trailer. Nearest wal-mart with a tire is 35 miles away. Slim is still driving at this point and we drive to the wal-mart to get the tire changed. After dicking around there talking the hillbilly wal-mart mechanic into changing the tire for us we are back on the road again at 4pm. Way behind schedule. I got back behind the wheel after the wal-mart ordeal. We get 10 miles down the road and tragedy strikes again... another tire blows. The weld broke on the inner fenderwell of the trailer and rubbed the sidewall down. Then the tire grabbed the fender well and bent it all to hell. We decide to just remove the wheel all together and get off at the nearest exit. This lands us at a volunteer fire department that was totally empty at the moment. I talk to a guy and he tells us that the nearest tire shop is 8 miles down the road. Ceisle's Exxon station. We park the trailer and drive down to talk to Ceisle. Its about 6pm and he closes at 7. He does us a huge favor and loans us a jack, crowbar, and hammer and mounts a tire up for us. The firemen cut the mangled fender out with a saws all and we take the truck and trailor to get the other tire replaced just to be safe. It was looking pretty rough and we didn't want to chance it. So we pay for the tires which are $300 plus $150 for the tire at wal-mart. At this point im exhausted, sweaty, and totally broke. Slim had to loan me $50 to pay for the last 2 tires. He also paid for all the gas on the way home. We finally got back on the road around 8pm or so Sunday to go back home. The trip back went pretty smoothly other than taking a couple 2 hour nap breaks along the way. Slim did almost all the driving on the way back because I was still feeling rough and when I did try to drive I was falling asleep. We got home at 10pm on Monday and just left the car on the trailer to get the out of state inspection done and get the title transfered. When we left on the trip I had $676 in my wallet and when we got back I had $2 left and owned Slim $170 for gas, tires, and toles.
Needless to say the trip would have never been possible without a lot of key people to help us along the way.
Scoot-found the car, checked it out, made sure it was legit for me
Slim-did an assload of driving and loaned me a bunch of money so we could get home.
Ceisle-hooked us up with tires and stayed open an hour and a half late to sell them to us
Firemen-cut the fender off which was a major problem
and all the other people I mentioned in the novel I just wrote above.
BIG Thanks again guys.
If you read the whole thing I give you props. I know it was long but it was the only way I could even begin to tell the story of how the car got to me.
In my next post Ill put up some pics of the progress that has gotten done so far so you can see whats going on.
