so im going to be going with a MS2 extra for my N/A 420a. itll be going to a shop to be installed, im not too confident in doing it all myself, but i am keen on learning about the tuning side of things. i just need to know what it may need to be set up properly. im not planning on putting crazy power into the car. its stock besides cams and an intake. will i need any sort of aftermarket fuel or spark management? any help is appreciated, thanks!

What made you choose the MS2 over the MS3? While you can definitely use the MS2, I would recommend spending the extra cash for an MS3. Some of those extra features can be nice to have.

I would also have the shop install a COP setup (coil over plug). It's far more convenient to have them wire and install that at the same time as the MS3 than to try adding it later. I've also found it easier to tune than with the stock wasted spark ignition system.

You don't need to change much of the fuel system with those modifications. I would install a slightly larger fuel pump though. I don't suggest it with a stock ECU since it raises fuel pressure, but you can dial in the injector dead times with MS2 or MS3 and get the mixture straightened out.

I'm open to answer any other questions and offer more suggestions. We also have @dsmcrzy and @silvreclips that may chime in and help, though they aren't as active these days. Let us know how it runs!

What exactly are the game changing differences between the two? i would consider the MS3, but after reading around, i find a lot of people are saying that the MS3 is overcomplicated. not only that, the price difference is pretty steep. i dont plan on going all out with the car, so i figured the MS2 was enough for me. but feel free to persuade me! LOL

IIRC the MS2 needs a different driver to run the COP setup, while any MS3 can do it as they come. There are some other differences that I'll link below.

hey man! coming back again. so im about to get everything in my cart to order. just to be sure, ive got the ms3x with the harness and usb tuning cable. for spark i have the quadspark ignition module. just the last couple of questions i have

1. is there any need for the ms3x harness too? or would it be better to just go with the ms3 and not the ms3x since im really not going crazy with the car.

2. where would be the best place to look for coil on plug for my car? im having a hard time finding any.

sorry for the bombardment, but youve been really helpful!

MS3 has logic level spark outputs through the MS3X, so you still need ignition drivers to run "dumb" coils, but you could use COP coils that have integrated drivers. Both MS2 and MS3 have a single integrated ignition driver; you would have to add a second, but then you could directly drive the stock coil. It looks like @Mc0ck1ner is going for an external ignition driver module, which will also work.

If you're getting the MS3X board, you need both the main harness and the MS3X harness. You wouldn't be able to use most of the features of the MS3X without the harness. MS3X will be especially useful if you want to run sequential injection and/or COP ignition. The extra outputs will be useful for that. It also has other inputs and outputs that can be used for more datalogging, and for controlling more of the car's other subsystems.

Look at these coils from the 1990s Dodge Intrepid 2.7L V6, which are "dumb", i.e. they do not have integrated drivers: 4609095AH

Or, here's an article about using COP coils from an Audi: https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/420a-megasquirt-cop-setup.484792/
