Mitsubishi just told me my tranny is going...

I was just told that a grinding at low rpm is my tranny slowly going. My car has 103K miles and has a new clutch and i really dont beat on it. I can post noises on this site but i first want to kno how much it would roughly cost me to rebuild or if buying another one used is a smarter idea. I'm desperate and dont have a lot of cash, any suggestions?

Try changing your tranny oil first before you shell out cash for a tranny.

They could be f***ing you but, here is a couple of questions.

1. How does it shift?
2. Does it grind throughout the whole second gear or just entering the gear?

Drive it until you believe the tranny may really be going.. Your going to feel a bad tranny.

When it does go, if it does soon, go with a 6bolt swap..

A rebuild on a 7bolt is kind of silly, because its still facing cracnkwalk later in its life. Put out some money find a 6bolt block in a junkyard, ship it and get it dipped, and add the internals..

Brand new 6bolt gst is gonna be bad ass.

Its better for now, and for the long run. Rebuilds cost alot of dough.

my dad is the type of person to play it safe... he may want to get this done now which sucks ass since i will have to pay a good portion of it but since the insurance is still under his name i dont have much of a choice haha. If i had to do this should i get the 6 bolt engine w/tranny for what price? basically, what is a good price to get this engine and tranny?

The trannys going to run you.. The 6bolt should be less of the problem when it comes to cost.

Find a used tranny that has low miles in a junkyard, pull it, and buy the 6bolt..

You can even pull the 6bolt and send it out like i added.

The whole job with labor would cost around 5grand if you find a good shop . Which is basically a brand new vehicle.
But if you got a new trans,motor, you want a newer or used turbo. Thats anywhere form 200-500$ depending on size your looking for. A used T28 wouldnt be much.

What are you talking about? He just needs to rebuild a tranny and he can use that rebuilt tranny anyways if he is doing a 6bolt swap. He just needs a new flywheel.

Ok.. you say it doesnt grind but before you said it grinds at low RPM... which is it? and does it shift smoothly in or not? We are talking about how it is now not how it was when you were driving it...

It doesn't make sense if it is grinding in all gears... I've never heard of such a case, its almost impossible for all syncros to go at the same time because the wear on the syncros are all different. Most people kill 1 and 2 through daily driving and others kill 3rd from racing. So you need to be more specific on what it is.. After you have answered which gears if all are grinding where and when as well as being able to tell us if it is shifting in smoothly.

If its all gears hell try to change the tranny fluid.. because its rare that all gears f*** up at the same time equally. So it would be a problem with the tranny as a whole. And get shep to rebuild your tranny he is the best. if that is the case. let us know more... Knowledge is power and you have given us no knowledge so we have no power to help you.

I also got my timing belt and everything done on this engine so i am reluctant to get rid of it but i was just thinking i can sell it without the turbo on ebay or something and make some of my money back. Would a 6 bolt tranny work with my 7bolt engine? or would i have to get a 97 tranny for my car only?

You will need a 2g tranny since the only thing that really matters on the tranny is the motor mount location and fitting.. a 1G tranny will not fit.

I got a lil confused, got ahead of myself, sorry.

You can rebuild the tranny, and keep the motor for now. No need swaping to a 6bolt now if you dont need to. In the future if your faced with needing a rebuild, i would reccomend a 6bolt swap..

But for now jus rebuild tranny and new flywheel. Fish around for lowest pricing.

i just got a quote on a new trans from mitsubishi it would be around $1,800 brand new and you can get a nice race trans for about $2,400 to $2600 with LSD. just so you know

Shepracing.com the only way to go... or teamrip.com I would rather get one rebuilt than getting a new stock one... I mean especially if you have a moddified car. New ones have the name new but shep trannies are just that much better.

And before jumping to conclusions give us symptoms.. cuz half the time dealers dont know what the hell they are talking to you about... hell if you wanted a cheap rebuild you can do it as well... maybe its just syncro 1 of 5 that needs a new syncro and rings. but you prob want to replace everything while you are in there anyways.

the problem with shipping it out is that this car has to be used by my dad as a daily driver... Symptoms are a low grinding noise at low rpm that goes away around 3500 rpm at each gear. It does not effect driving, it is only a noise. Mitsu said it was the syncros that were making the noise. that is all i kno for now since i have not experienced any of this, its just what my dad is telling me.

if needing a usable car is holding you back, buy the shep tranny he'll ship it to you and you can send the old one back to him and he'll credit you. I would rather send the old one first tho, cause he tears into it on the first day and tells you whats up with it.

he told me that he really doesnt kno what the problem is and needs to see the tranny before he says anything. He said that if it was a tranny problem it would not be a lot of work since it does not seem like it needs to be be heavily repaired especially if it is still going into gear smoothly. My other question is this, is it smart for me to rebuild this tranny and keep the 2g motor or should i just make this a big job and swap to the more reliable 1g turbo motor? I want to make sure tho my s16g turbo will be able to connect to it tho...

Does anyone know where i can find good used tranny and engines? Any junkyards that are known to have eclipses?

A used T28 wouldnt be much.

Yea lets put a t28 on a 6-bolt.
