Hey guys I have a little bit of a problem.....a couple months ago i blew my head gasket and decided i would jus do it in my driveway got everything off put arps in it and a composite head gasket. While the head was off i decided to get it decked and put bc springs and retainers in it and bc 280's got everything back on the car was running good except for needing a tune. After that i decided to do a new timing belt got the timing belt on timing set perfect fixed an exhaust leak and the started running like shit. it idles at like 500 rpm and jus dies and is missing real at bad idle and down low changed the plugs and it was still doin it tryed to set the idle and nothing?? i am pretty lost on this one can anyone help?? its a 90 gsx thanks

I know it's kind of basic, but have you checked all the electrical connections in the engine bay that have to come loose for the head gasket job? Things such as the CAS and coil pack connectors work even when they aren't all they way in, and I would not be surprised if one of the connectors has just worked it's way loose since you did the head work. Check your vac lines and all the electrical connections, if that doesn't fix it, pull your plugs and take a look at them. If you can tell us how it's running (rich and lean you can tell from the plugs), then we'd probably have a better starting point.

First, please fill out your profile.

I'm not a cam expert, but I've read plenty of threads about more-aggressive cams giving idle/loping problems. Does it run well at higher rpm? Any codes thrown? I agree with the other guy: double-check everything. I'd even check the belt timing again (not just with a light, also check the timing marks on the crank, oil pump, and cams).

Did you do a boost leak test since you had the motor back together?

NGK BPR6ES plugs gapped to 0.028"?

How's compression?

Whats your vac reading? Also did you change the plugs they could be fouled out. I'm going to hope for your sake that you didn't bend a valve.

Larger cams Require a higher Idle speed.
Triple check that timing, Boost leaks and all Elec connections...
If all is in order. Adjust your base idle up some and see if that helps or fix's your problem.
Some engine cam combos REQUIRE a higher Idle speed to maintain a decent idle.
280's are on the large side, Requiring a Idle adjustment.
