mhi 14b vs ebay 16g?????

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

14b all the way cost half as much and last easily twice as long

If the eBay 16G was built to the same spec as a 14B, I'd have no problem saying to use the eBay product....but it's not.

eBay turbos are so hit-and-miss in terms of quality. Add the fact that the "Evo III-spec" compressor wheel is heavier than even the MHI Big 16G wheel (because it's made of cheap pot metal instead of extruded aluminum), so it'll spool more like a MHI 20G. The early Chinese turbines broke on almost every turbo they sold, so they responded by beefing up the shaft to a Garrett T3-spec. You're now left with a turbo that uses a T3 turbine seal, T3 journal bearings, and Mitsu thrust parts. Good luck finding all the parts to rebuild that turbo in one kit.

eBay turbochargers....turbochargers they are; good, reliable turbochargers they are not.

I recentley had mybig 16g blow on me, so tight for cash i went with the ebay evoIII 16 g , i didnt even have it on my car for 2k miles and it started to howl. i took it off and purchased a 14b used for $50 in the classifieds on this site. the ebay model spooled late and didnt last long enough for me to feel good about spending $250 on it. plus you cant rebuild it with tdo5h parts because the shaft is a different size. the 14b is the best way to go.

If you need to listen to anyone who chimies in on this poll, listing to this guy. He has rebuilt so many turbos and know's what he is talking about.

I would go with the 14b as well. More reliable and genuine. Proven to do 10s passes (extensive modifications). ebay 16g, IIRC a mix of internals and not balanced. Ready to explode. Would cost more going with the 16g in the long run once it dies...

Hell Id say even a used 14b would be better than a new ebay anything turbo. (not to mention a shitload cheaper)

I own two ebay turbos, a 16g and a 50 trim. Both are junk in my opinion, good for nothing more than a paperweight.

Friends dont let friends buy Ebay turbos!

Alright man, if he is interested ill let it go for 250, this is pretty cheap for a Evo II 16g, and a Buschur 16g at that.

Thanks
-Phil

Ill sell him a Buschur Racing Evo III 16g for $250, ZERO shaft play, real nice turbo, makes good boost

^^

NOT an Evo III 16G.

Appears to be a standard Big 16G but it's impossible to tell without a closeup of the part number on the compressor cover; not that there's much difference between the two, but the Evo III 16G spools a little quicker and has slightly more peak airflow.

I know what i bought

If the turbo in the picture is the turbo you bought, then unfortunately someone misled you.

Evo III 16G's have an added "tab" on the actuator mount which is missing from the actuator in your pic, the compressor fins are longer than the turbo in your pic (less "hub" area to the wheel- the fins look as if they stretch the entire way down to the outer radius of the locknut), and your turbo has the "squared off" turbine housing inlet flange where an Evo III's flange is rounded.

Standard Mitsu inlet flange:

Since you're so well-educated on the turbo you're attempting to sell in the forums (which, by the way, is against the rules), what's the part number on the compressor cover? Fill in the blank....49178-014x0

Hmm a good ol argumentation over the which one ? Great for conversation. Well as you can see the answer has been said for the 14b. On another note I have recently installed that eBay 16g turbo. With my own curiousity making the decision the hunk of metal has met my expectations so far. maybe I was tossed the somewhat quality one of the bunch but I don't expect a long prosperous life from this thing. I just want it to last the winter but ya know not keepin my hopes to high

1470 is definitely an Evo III part number- it's possible someone swapped covers but it's also possible an Evo III cartridge was dropped into a Big 16G turbine housing.

Again, it's not that any one is worse than the other, just think of the Evo III as a "bonus" because it's in the same price range when new. The three attributes that make an Evo III better are the lighter compressor wheel, the turbine housing (due to the larger outlet), and the actuator with a slightly higher spring pressure. At best, your turbo only has one of the three....but it's still a deal. :thumb:

In the future, keep all sales transactions out of the forums and contact each other through private message. It keeps the forums cleaner and doesn't cause as much controversy.
