Manual 1g to Auto Conversion [Merged 1-9]

I am looking at converting a non turbo 1g manual to a turbo 1g AT it looks like a bolt in deal but are there any show stoppers I dont see?

I know it's definately doable.But, i'd rather take a different route.AWD 5 spd trans are such achilles hill for dsm's. Auto seems to be less of a hassle. I think an awd auto setup is just better for drag racingg.

As the topic says. I just got the taxes back, and can think of nothing I'd rather do than to spray my car with a healthy shot and an Automatic trans. i have the nitrous, but still have a manual trans for now.

I need to know who has done this type of conversion, and was is hard to do? How long did it take you to complete? What parts do you need to make this conversion work? I have a low mileage 1g so I rather keep my current car instead of switching thing over to an auto shell. I will talk to a IPT representative about a converter, and what the specs should be. I will also get there shift kit, clutches and shift box.

If anyone know how much weight this will add, feel free to chime in aswell.

I'm also looking for a AWD auto shell that I can rape for the parts, to get this conversion done in the area.

Im pretty sure there is 1 manual to auto swap Ive seen before. Search "manual swap" and go back pretty far.

Its a project but its pretty straight forward. Ive done a 5 sp swap, and its some work either way, but its rewarding.

I can give you quick parts list:
Trans & T case
Torque converter
Shifter cables and shifter
TCU and wiring (that might get tricky)
Auto brake pedal (weld up clutch master cylinder holes)
Rear end (different ratios)
Front axles (different lengths)
Starter (possibly)

Of course I did it on a 2g so some things may be different... plus some people find everything to be different. I would go with the auto to manual swaps and just move backwards.

The automatic tranny weighs around 70-80 lbs. more than a manual.

I'm swapping out my 5-speed for an auto tranny because i'm tired of the weak-ass DSM manual transmissions that break if you look at them wrong. Does anyone know what all I have to have to do this swap?

search for a auto to manual conversion & do the opposite...most likly people will sell off there auto stuff so buy it from them. are you looking for a DD auto trans or more performance based?

It's a street/strip car so atleast a shift kit and maybe a stall. I can get all of the parts off of a donor car, the only part that makes me nervous is the TCU and wiring.

I'm also assuming that the n/t and turbo auto's are the same? Also what type of fluid should I use with an auto and are there any good/bad additives I should know about?

If you want to swap out your manual transmission for an automatic transmission then you will need,

1. Automatic wiring harness,
2. TCU,
3. Automatic pedal assembly,
4. Torque converter,
5. Flex plate,
6. Round metal spacer that goes on the end of the crankshaft to space the flex plate farther from the block.
7. Transmission cooling lines that run to the lower section of the radiator, (independent cooler on AWDs)
8. Shifter assembly, with cables, these go through the floor of the car not through the firewall.

The automatic shifter assembly also has a cable that goes to the ignition that stops you from turning off the engine when not in park, you can install it but I suggest that you delete this cable by cutting it as it is not needed and would only be wasting time. You can re use the manual pedal assembly and just disconnect the clutch cylinder.
I suggest that you buy a Road Surge shift box, and get a shift kit from PTE.

So much mis-information in this thread. I would recommend deleting this thread and starting a new topic in the auto tech section of this board where you will get answers from people who actually know the answers.

It is not too difficult but it is tedius. I've done several of these conversions FWD and AWD. Nobody in this thread is correct so far. I will get my list of parts from the conversions I've done and post it up later.

actually there is some decent information into this thread becuase it is the exactly opposite of converting an auto to manual. and yes you will need to get wire harnesses and figure out what TC you'll need. fluids and other random things... <---certified mechanic here buddy but I do think we need a better thread on this
