Ok, so I've read so many thread's of newbie's asking what they should do to their car's first. I thought well first thing they need to do is maintenance. SOOOO, here is what should be done when you get your DSM (for the newbie's). Link's on how to do some of these are at the bottom.

- Plugs. NGK BPR6ES @ .028 gap
- Plug wire's. Any that aren't arcing or of poor design
- Oil. Which includes engine, transmission along with if applicable transfer case and rear diff.
- Oil filter. Higher micron number the better filtration
- Coolant
- Timing Belt kit. Full OEM kit with the belt, both pulleys and hydraulic tensioner. Balance shaft belt and tensioner pulley if it's still on the car.
- Water pump. Can use autopart store brand
- Air filter. K&N or Vibrant Performance with adapter plate for stock MAF
- Fuel filter
- Brakes. Hawk or EBC for better stopping power
- Tires. Good gripping tires
- Wheel bearings. Only if one of them is going out
- Ball joints (Check with dealer to see if they are in for a recall)
- Alignment
- Brake and Clutch fluid. Flush Dot 3
- Boost leak test
- Fix any exhaust leaks
- PVC Valve. OEM only and check to be sure it doesn't leak either
- Fix any CEL codes with appropriate part
- Replace all coolant lines
- Replace all vacuum lines
- Valve cover gasket kit. Valve cover gasket, half moon gasket and 4 spark plug well gaskets
- Oil cap gasket
- Disconnect clutch pedal sensor (for 4g63 guys)

now if only we can get them to use the search to find it. no one uses the modification paths i think everyday i get on here i read "what should i do to my car". but i like this hope it gets used
 
I underdstand where you are coming from but that's why I stated not of poor design i.e. thin wires, thin insulator, bad connectors. For the most part, wire is wire and as long it can carry the current to the plugs without interference or shorting then they should be good. Bigger gauge wire the better however.

Well if this is a thread to inform new members then it should be specific. Most new members won't know which spark plug wires are of poor design and which work great with these cars. Thats why I made the suggestion.

For spark plugs the list doesn't say "spark plugs that are not of poor design", it says "NGK BPR6ES @ .028 gap". Why because these plugs work best on these cars and most new members won't know that right from the get go.

Brand new here so starting at the beginning.

This all looks like good advice but I’d like someone to explain to me “higher micron rating is better”. This I believe is not accurate.

A micron is a size measurement, so higher means it will catch particles of that size or larger at a given beta rating. Therefore smaller micron rating is “better”, but that is not accurate either, at least not totally. What you really want is a high beta rating, which determines the % of particles of the micron rating sizzle that are caught on a given pass of oil. Now, that is the way filter manufacturers rate things, I could be wrong for automotive applications, but I do not think so.
 
I believe you're correct. However, the blanket statement that smaller is better ignores that there is usually a tradeoff between particle size and flow rates and below say 5 microns the particles don't really matter since they pass bearing clearances.

Typical passenger car and light-duty truck oil filters typically have an absolute micron rating in the range of 25-30 microns and choosing between them comes down to other factors.

Yes, that can be true, but that is usually related to the pleating and dirt holding capacity. Either way I just wanted to clarify since someone may think is 25 is good i will go 100, which is NOT good. Happy to contribute in a small way. This site is a wealth of information!
