Ok guys i have to update my profile i bought a 92 eagle talon tsi, it has 96k miles. But there is one problem, when im driving and i get to 3k rpm it makes a loud winding noise all the way till i stop accelerating. Even when i come off the gas and let the car rpms come back down you can still hear it. So its only noticeable after 3k rpms. Its no rod knock, and i def know what lifter tick is its none of that. And even if it was a rod would of been gone by now. But i havnt redline the car at all because i keep thinking if i did something crazy is going to happen which it probably will because its a dizzum this is my 6th dsm so im not pressing it. I've seen some people say that the harmonic balancer could be the problem, or my timing could be off by a tooth or two. It cranks fine and runs fine but it does have a pretty rough idle at 750rpms. Does anyone have any ideas, im pulling it apart to investigate monday so any tips pointers and suggestions are welcome..Thanks guys

Boost leak, somewhere next to the j-pipe most likely. It happens at 3,000 rpms because that's when your turbo is spooling up. Rough idle would explain a boost leak too. So do a BLT then come back with results.

Yeah it sounds like it could be excessive shaft play in the turbo, causing the compressor blades to contact the housing. Does it make this sound all the time over 3000rpm, or only when boosting?

Pop the intake hose off the turbo and check for shaft play, a bit of side to side is ok, but in and out is bad news. But if this is your 6th DSM, you probably already knew that

Check the balance shaft belt too. Why haven't you checked the timing?
I havnt really had time. The two cam gears are in sync, I just want to check the crank and oil timing marks too as soon as I get time.probably monday.

Ok, I havnt done a blt yet, but I did remove the tb,jpipe, and rtv'd them to seal better than those crummy gaskets. And also replaced the o-ring from the biss screw. I do hear air coming from the intercooler so I def know that there is one there, u can hear it at,idle. other than that I doubt its that. it sounds more of a rubbing noise than wine..

Whining usually means you have excessive cleareance i your turbo. The bearings maybe wore out or its just not getting oil well because of something blocking the pin hole in oil feed of the turbo.

I thought the same thing, but this turbo has no shaft play what so ever NONE. In nuetral if u rev it past 3k you can hear it too so even without load you can still hear it.

If the compressor blades were hitting the housing that turbo wouldn't last long at all. Do you have a boost/vac gauge? What are you getting at idle? It should be atleast 17+ with stock cams. My 160k engine pulled 21 in. hg. vaccuum at idle. I definitely think you have a boost leak very close to the compressor housing (j-pipe gasket) which is making the whining/rubbing sound. It's possible it could be the clamp that is a little loose holding the compressor housing and turbine housing together.

Nope...thing is I dont have to be in boost to get the noise..kinda like a scraping sound

You better check timing.. Its more likely one of the timing belt bearings.. its letting you know its old and needs to be replaced.

But wouldnt that make noise all the time? Monday im goin to pull everything on the belt side apart.

Look at it like this.. the faster the bearing are spinig the more friction it is... have someone rev the car for you while you listen to the engine.. I also agree on checking on your turbo..

Pull the intake pipe off, it takes 5 minutes..And check for shaft play on the turbo..Also look for lines inside the compressor housing below the compressor wheel.

Try wiggling the wheel, if it hits the compressor cover(which will make lines, or a groove) then the turbo is shot..

Post #7 he said there was no shaft play.

Straight cut oil pump gears can be loud, as can a dieing oil pump.

Remove the alternator belt and see if it goes away. Bearings failing in the alt make the same noise. When you do this, do not run the engine more than 45-60 seconds so the engine doesn't overheat.

Yes there is absolutely no shaft play on this turbo at all..i thought it was the crank pulley too. The noise also gives off a vibration, so I know its something rubbing against something I can feel it in my foot when im on the accelerator. But the balance shafts it could be too, I cant wait to find out. If this helps it gets sluggish around 5k rpm and acts as if it doesnt ant to pull anymore which made me think timing

Ok guys I have a idea i havnt checked yet. Could the exhaust side of the turbo go bad and not the compressor side as far as the turbine its self. Isnt it ran on the same shaft. From the looks of it the compressor side has no plays at all but it def sounds like a problem inside the hotside of the turbo.

It's ran on the same shaft, only thing that can happen is that the blades could become "melted" from high EGTs (running lean and low timing can cause this). I don't think that would be the issue though.

Where is the noise coming from? front, back, driverside or pass. side? Is it coming from the head?

Timing was a issur at one point. They slapped a new cas on it withouy adjusting it.
Make sure you haven't spun a balance shaft bearing, happened to me it started vibrating above 2k rpm for no reason.
Man that sounds to scary, I really dont want to tear this car down and mess with the bbalance shafts. But if it was my balance shaft bearing, wouldnt that change my oil pressure?

it sounds like its coming from the side where the belts are when I reach over 3k. But at idle I can hear a noise like something is rattling in the turbo but it has no play. I'll definitely check it again. Just weird because this car dsnt have 100k miles on it.
