That solenoid that moves the gear in and out is called the Bendix.
Probably, thats one of the main reasons my starters on cars died. What was really nice was on my truck it stayed engaged and spun till it got so hot the wire windings inside melted. That caused a dead short, which shut down the truck and killed the battery. Also think it did something to the altnerator cause that is disfuntional now.
I have a warranty on the car, do you think Mitsu will replace what's hammered on my car?
My advise is do not keep driving, either bring to dealer or do yourself. If neglected look at spending more cash then needed. (see above)
P.S. It can also damage your flywheel if its a stick and the autos have the ring gear on the torque convertor $$$. Best of luck.
