Whenever I start my car I hear the loudest squeeking noise from under the hood, it might be the alternator. I dont know. It goes on for a while then the idle falls and its ok. WHat could this be?

Right before I changed my waterpump, my car was doing this. Eaither you need a new waterpump or the belt that runs the alternator and the waterpump needs to be tightened.

a belt more likely than not
Agreed-- I've had loose belts like that before and they make quite a racket on startup. I have a slightly different squeak now-- sounds like a little kid riding a tricycle with a squeaky wheel down my driveway. Goes away after about 30 secs; probably a pulley, I'm guessing.

I must post this six times a week.

Check your harmonic balancer.
I get tired of telling ppl too. But ya gotta help em. Also look into your Balance Shaft Belts. Those are the ones that make you mad cause theres nothing you can do you gotta just take them out. At least thats what I did.

My car sqweaks att start up to and I have checked the belts and they are fine. Were are the balance shaft belts? You took them out, what happens then that is there purpose?
Thanx /Martin

Belts. Easy fix. However, if you replace your belts, and the belt on the waterpump keeps squeaking after tightening, then your water pump is getting loose and needs to be replaced. This happened to me recently til the water pump started leaking profusely, and it got replaced along with timing belt.

its ur starter, lots of 2g's do this on a cold start up. i'm sure u noticed on a warm start up, it doesnt do this, or not as loud :) it's no big deal

If you're referring to me, I have a one-piece crank pulley, so I'm pretty sure that's not it.

perhaps you should look into getting rid of that.

Balance shaft belts are on the balance shaft on the lower end of your motor, they are inside it so you have to tear into it to take them out. They more of less keep your motor shaking down. If you take them out you will notice your motor will move a little more but i guess it can add up to 10hp because your motor doesnt have to work to turn the shafts. just what ive been told.

yeah i decided to change my timing belt one day and finally took off the timing platic cover only to find my balance shaft belt ripped up into 5 pieces wrapped around the balance shaft pullies... I felt so lucky that non of that crap took out my timing belt all that time i had been driving it.... Ive had no balance shaft belt for a year now and ive noticed noting different. aside from the faster reving but im sure that has more to do with my aftermarket lightend flywheel.

If your cars like mine, the tensioner on your alternator slowly after about a months time lets the belt become semi loose allowing the belt to start squeeling. I swear i need to go get me some lok-tite and do it right, this crap is annoying

I think my starter is doing the same thing.
Only when it's cold though.
I'll crank it, and it will start, but there is this squeaking/rattling noise, then it goes away after no more than about 3 seconds....
The engine almost stumbles til the noise is gone, then the engine revs up to the cold starting rpms of about 1500 or so, then tapers down to 800....
But if I drive the car and get up to operating temp, park it and start it again, no noise what so ever.....
I'm thinking it's the part in the starter that moves the starting gear onto the flywheel.
Once started, this part is not moving the starter gear off of the flywheel fast enough thus getting caught on the flywheel after the engine has started.
What do you think?
I don't want to replace my starter, I heard that's a PITA to do.
I have a warranty on the car, do you think Mitsu will replace what's hammered on my car?

I would look and actually try to pull on your harmonic balancer... I got a weird loud squeal at around 3K RPM and couldn't quit figure out what it was.. (never would have thought to check the balancer) Well the rubber was completely broken from the pulleys. I'm amazed that it didn't do some major damage since it drives the Water Pump.. So give it a check...

check your belt tension and the crankshaft pulley. if still no luck, then one of your accessories might be bad. does it make this noise any other time?

Its probably your alternator belt. Mine did this all the time also until I retightened it. Tighten your belt and Im almost 100% sure it'll cure your problem :thumb:

yeap my car is the same exact way. On a 'cold' start, it makes that funky noise and then goes away. On a 'warm' start, no sound nothing.

Although my p/s pulley is squeaky sometimes, i dunno if i have to just lubricate it somehow or replace it altogether. It is probably important to note that sometimes when i turn the wheel hard in either diirection it sounds really bad, like this low moaning of sorts.

anyone know what the hell that is?
