The cars been sitting for years, I am in the process right now of going through the car and checking all the belts and hoses. One issue in the car is the shifter has alot of play in it, it is hard to get into the gears due to all the play, and even when in gear I can shake the shifter side to side a few inches. When I pull the boot off the shifter and peak down, I can see that the bushings have way to much play, What can I do to fix this? Should I just install a short throw shifter?
Thanks for your help in advance

Get the aluminum shifter bushings for the actual shifter and than the cables. I had a similar issue years back with a car with worn rubber shifter bushings and this fixed it and greatly improved it.

Search there is alot you can do to stiffen up the shifter just search.

Do you have a brand name or a link where I can find those bushings for the actual shifter? All of my searches come up with either the bushings for the shifter plate or the cable...
Thanks

thats what im talking about for the shifter plate and than the cables. those are what you want.

You should check the condition of the bushings on the pivot of the shifter, the ones on my 90 GST where pretty worn out. I am sure you have already checked this, but make sure the shifter cable bracket off the transmission is not loose.

Definitely get the shifter base bushings and the shifter cable bushings to stiffen things up.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but the last I checked they do not make a short-shifter for a 90.
If you notice on the vfaqs the 90s have the stops built into the pivot arm, while the 91-94s do not. Putting a short-shifter on your 90 that does not have the stops on it can cause serious damage to your transmission.

+1 on the bushings. Get yourself a nice set of solid bushings and that should help stiffen up your shifts and feel of the shifter.
