I've seen write ups on rebuilding a shifter but all were for 1st gens. Would it be the same concept for my 2nd gen? I CANNOT find a solution for the play in my shifter. While in each gear it moves side to side as if it was in neutral. I have used metal spacers in the car and metal ones under the hood. Everything in the car looks fine. Im starting to think its the tranny. Can someone please help!!!

That's easy enought to check. Have someone wiggle the shifter while you observe the cable ends and arms at the transmission.

There is a lot of wobble in the pivot of the stock shifter. Consider a B$M short shifter or clone or at least replace the pivot sleeve.

Having the same problem as you are, though the problem got even worse once I installed my short shifter, now in neutral it will move like and inch in both directions, and while in gear, it moves like 1/4 in each direction. Really would like to fix this problem, could it be the underhood shifter bushing mod?

Today i had someone put the car into 3rd gear and move the shifter from side to side. I looked under the hood and saw that one of the arms stayed still but the one on the right side moved front and back. could it be something in the transmission it self that lets it move? it seems like it has to be ### the cables are fine (at least as far as i can see) and the connections of the cables at both ends are fine.

Perhaps it's the the actual linkage that is loose itself or the counter-weight on the armature that shifts positions in sync with each gear.

It's a problem I had. It definitely got worse when I switched to the B&M short shifter. I talked with Shep about it and he reminded me that his seven second car uses the stock shifter. He suggested I switch back to the stock setup. I have a '95 GSX. Went to the junkyard, tore open a 97 and discovered that of course, Mitsubishi redesigned the shifter. So I grabbed the 97 model and went home. I threw in the '95 model and still had shifter play. Switched over to the '97 model and viola! That is the solution. Go grab a '97+ shifter out of a junker. It should fix your problem. Remember to lube up all pivot points before you seal up the center console.
