I just picked up a 2g DSM. Car seems to be stuck in Gear. and the shifter you just just move it any where and it would just bounce back to kinda neutrual like if it wasn't connected to anything.

Previous owner told me it was the clutch fork. But if that was true, I wouldn't have pressure on the clutch when I press it in correct? I had someone move the shifter when I looked under the car to see if it moves the levers on the transmission and it does...

Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a broken shift fork to me. I would pull it apart and inspect to be sure.

How hard is it to replace a shifter fork?

Removing the trans is pretty simple. Then you are going to need a few bearing/gear pullers to remove the outside of the tranny case. I wouldn't recommend dissassembly without a factory manual, but if you ask around i am sure you can find someone who may have the illustrated parts breakdown to make sure you don't have pieces leftover.

There is a Vfaq on it somewhere I cant remember where it is now. Shows the basic teardown to where you need to get to. If you would see the forks and where the break, I cant believe they last as long.

Forgot to mention have you checked to make sure the cables have not popped off the bracket on the trans?

Haha, Yeah that was the first thing I checked, and yes they weren't even bolted down to tranny!
Then second place I checked was the shifter, The right side bushing popped out of the base of the shifter... So Fixed that also. So now the shifter, moves side to side fine, looks like it goes into 1st and 2nd fine.. but 3rd and 4th just moves forward and back freely like its not even attached to anything... so Shifter fork seems broken... I guess its from him yanking it out of 3rd....

I broke my 3 - 4 shift fork 2 months after buying my car! It was from banging INTO 3rd too hard.

I would NOT recommend tearing down the trans to a beginner. Getting everything back together in the proper order is not a simple job that you can just follow pictures. You have to have an understanding of how all the parts work together.

I would check the shift cables first!

One is possibly either broken or popped off.

I checked the cable, when the shifter moves forward and back, I can see it on the tranny also, So its moving the arms on the tranny... If the cable was broken, tranny arm wouldn't move correct?

Its probably a broken shift rail end. I broke mine on my first dsm 2 times before i decided to upgrade. Get a set of steel shift rail ends from team rip, they are worth it if you drive like i do.

that's correct.

BOTH arms were moving on the transmission?

If that's the case, then the problem is definatly internal... lucky for you, it's not that hard to pull.

Sounds a little more serious, but maybe the bracket that holds the cables to the tranny came off or came loose. My friends 95 had that happen when one bolt backed out and the other was just barely hanging on. I believe he only had 1st, 3rd and 5th. Like I said, probably more serious, but something else to check. Pictures would help us.
