Hey guys, im new to the whole new world of DSM motors but i have been doing my research and learning a lot. I have been looking into a 96 Mitsubishi eclipse GST. The car has about 92K on it and looks great. only thing im worried about is the "walking crank". Ive been reading alot of stories about peoples engines going on them, out of no where. i just wanted to know how common this is? should i be afraid with a car that high of miles? if it happens will Mitsubishi be able to repair the car?(i heard no matter how many miles or year Mitsubishi would repair the car for free since it's a defect), if anyone could answer all these questions best as possible that would be awesome

thanks

Only way to really repair it is to get a new bottom end on the motor. Crankwalk is pretty overrated in all actuality, it can happen on any car. Typically if it makes it past the 110,000 mile mark without developing symptoms you shouldnt have to worry about it. Make sure you change your oil, timing belts, etc normally and the car should last a long time :)

It's over rated. I would have no idea where to find the thread, but I read the stats on crankwalk on this site one day. The percentages of 1ga, 1gb, 2ga, 2gb that developed crankwalk were extremely low.

On vfaq.com they have a couple tips on possible techniques to help prevent crankwalk if you want to take extra precautions.

It can happen to any gen at any mileage really, so high mileage doesn't necessarily mean the clock is ticking.

as Mitsubishi eclipse owner's what are somethings i should be paying more attention to while im there looking at the car?..... i really love this car and for high mileage i just wanna be 100% sure the car is running how the owner tells me it is and i don't get any surprises if i buy it.

Here is how you know if its suffered from CW... one of these little guys will be attached to the car....

If the clicking isnt heard and the clutch isnt acting goofy upon left hand turns *assuming its 5spd. Then id say disregard CW. BUT once you get the car go ahead and install new bearings. It can be done while the motor is in the car. Its not shade tree its been done for years. I did my 2g with 140k. Mitsu made updated thrush bearings for the main cap. If youll read those areticles posted by the wiseman itll describe what happens in CW.

The bearings are cheap insurance IMO.

Im not gona say that its overated, because it does happen, but if you treat it well by doing your maintenance and dont crank it up too much on the 7 bolt, this sounds like a sweet low mile car that should give you years of fun.
