LOOK at new Ebay 16g turbo and exhaust setup

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

My cousin has had an ebay style 16g on his car for a year or so, and it's been doing great. He runs 24psi most of the time, and dynoed 321hp 347torque last fall, basically stock besides the tune, injectors, exhaust, air filter, and E85. The only thing I've noticed is that it spools a little slower than my real evo 3 16g does. It was a heck of a deal for the $80 he paid for it used.

like my cousin jrohner said i have had one of these turbos for over a year at 24 psi some times more, and its holding up great awesome power more then most the guys with "real" evoIII 16gs have. so if you really feel like spending 500 or more for a real 16g and have the same power go ahead I know I am glad I didn't.

With the E-bay turbo's you hope you get one of the good ones. Sometimes you get a good one but most of the time it is bad. When I bought the car they had just put one on there and it was running ok but it was a little slugish. About 6000 miles later the shaft play began and it got worse quicker then it should have. If you wanna good tubro go to index you can get a ported big 16g for like $600 shipped.

looks pretty good. i always loved how ebay vendors could find a way to make shit look clean, and still last. maybe some assholes, like the ones on our forums, just decided to give ebay a bad name one day LOL.

I really hope that you don't rely on those zip ties.... Thats about the dumbest crap I have seen so far on this forum. I hope they worked harder on the stuff I cannot see than the stuff I can see, for your sake man. I don't think some of those welds look too good either, but I cannot see too good when I zoom in....I would have someone with a welder and some skills look that mani over before I bolted it on my car.

Seriously, I was expecting this to be a joke thread....like maybe 2 or 3 posts down the joke would come out of the bag... "here is the plastic heat shield they send with every turbo!"

+1 ...if u get lucky your manifold wont crack, your turbo will last longer then a year, but that ###### rigged water line will melt...and it will spool slower the real 16g does..i got a real E316g/w 7cm gasket shipped to my door for 520$ with 1 year warranty. looks nice tho except for the water line good luck!

Yeah the water lines need a little redoing. The other one is weird to how it angles down so far. So how many hundred extra is 400rpms of spool worth?

those rip ties are plastic? they are going to melt use somethihng different to tie that heat wrap preferably something metal other then that not a bad looking setup :)

Good call on the zip ties being pastic so close to that runner. Here it is now with a metal fastening technique.

The problem with the water lines was they didn't fit. So i had to cut one of them (inside one), but then the hose was real close to the runner so I had to heat wrap it.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Keep it coming!:hellyeah:

I am curious as to how people who have these turbos think they work great? Unless you owned a nicer turbo you wouldn't know the difference. When I first got my car it had NGK bpr6ek plugs in it. It ran made power, well I swapped in the bpr7es plugs and it is a different car. There are a few good deals on ebay (I personally feel the f1 clutches are a great deal, and several forums back that up) but when you get a resounding no on an item it usually means its a waste of money. I don't know that people are necessarily being negative as much as they don't want people to waste their money time and possibly engine to save what amounts to penny's in the scope of an entire build up. I have spent countless hours fixing "rigged up" stuff on my car from the previous owners. You do it right and you have WAY more fun driving and racing (on the track of course) and end up with a great car that can straight bomb.

Everyone shoudl do brakes and suspension first anyway.

I'm not a hater.. I've just already been there done that.. My turbine wheel melted and shaft play felt like the turbo was near the end of its life. And that was within 100 miles..
To all the people saying "My ebay turbo works great!" - Go check your shaft play...

Its never good to cheap out on the main components of a setup. Sure smaller things like rads and such you may be able to skimp on and buy knockoffs, but a turbo just won't work.

Tell that to the Holset guys.

Holset turbos actually have a solid reputation for being dependabe. You can buy a used one in good condition and get plenty of usage out of it when oiled properly:thumb:
It's not like playing roulette as with some other turbos;)

Mine has 0% shaft play 1 year and about 5000 miles later dd at 25psi. ran the car at the local 1/8th mile tonight my best et was 8.364 at 88.09mph 60foot of 1.931 car also got a 60foot another run of 1.828 that run was at 87.75mph at 8.276et. and remember i have a stock side mount and stock cams.

Why not buy a used MHI 16g instead of the ebay 16g? They are roughly the same price, and the MHI seem to hold up 100x better. Sorry, not trying to be mean but I had one of the bad ebay turbos and learned my lesson.

i dont know i have heard horror storries about ebay turbos he will be lucky if it surevives through the break in
do you honestly believe every single word thats posted on the internet?
if you dont have first hand experience you have no room to talk here.

OP, dont mind the haters its YOUR car.
my ebay 16g is holding solid 18psi for the past year still NO shaftplay. i had a little trouble with the WG so i picked up a tial 38mm/ punishment racing SS O2 and the car is holding up solid

I also saw a Holset on here that was about the most destroyed turbo I could've ever imagined; it doesn't mean they're all junk. I've heard of people running 500-600+ hp on a stock engine, yet I've seen them let go with everything bone stock. Anything CAN fail. Random part failures happen all the time, even in professional racing where they have more money in the engine alone than most of us on here will ever have in our entire car (more than many of our houses cost even).

I still wonder how many of the haters actually have their own first hand experience with these turbos, rather than just posting what they've heard (probably all referring to the same couple failure instances). Plus, I bet a high percentage of those who buy the ebay turbos don't do the install job as well as those who spend a grand + on just the turbo (such as priming them with oil, checking the oil pressure that the turbo is receiving, etc).
