Ok guys im pretty new here but i've been searching the forum for about a week now and cant find a definite answer. I've got a 97' GST 2.3L stroker with a 20G turbo. The timing belt broke about 2 months ago and I finally got it replaced. I asked the guy to check for bent valves and he "claimed" he did and that they were ok.

But now when i start her up theres this LOUD ticking sound and now im getting white smoke from the exhaust!!

If you give it a little gas then of course more smoke comes out. I did an oil change with royal purple and now its now leaking a tiny bit which seems to be coming from somewhere close to the downpipe. The car has no cat so im not sure exactly what the issue is. Ive heard blown turbo, blown head gasket, o-2 sensor, a seal somewhere, pcv valve. I just cant put my finger on it. Hopefully this video will give you guys a better understanding of my frustrations.

Yeah man your a good 10 hours away LOL. Alot of people here seem to do the muscle car thing or cars with huge rims. Technically virginia is considered the south so i guess thats why.

well...you said you confirmed you have bent valves?

listen to bluefire though because if a turbo goes bad since the coolant ports and oil ports are so close together you could very well have a bad cartidge in the turbo as well letting oil and coolant in your exhaust....

and as for a head...there is a junk yard here that has a 1995 tsi in it with the head on it!!! drive 10 hours pick it up for 25 bucks and your golden haha

I wish it was that easy LOL. And im thinking it could be the turbo. It didnt quite sound right when it started to spool. Kinda like it was gargalling LOL. But that couldve been a combination of the valves. I'll check the junk yards around here again and see what i can find.

well a turbo wont make that sound at idle...because a turbo only makes any real sound when under a load....but yeah like bluefire said...check your turbo for shaftplay

does it whine when underboost? like the sound of say a dentist drill on steroids?

Nah it only makes that noise when its under load. When its at idle its perfectly fine. And it kinda sounds like a dentist drill on steroids. I might have to check again once i get this head straight.

check for thrust as well grab the shaft (not the one between your pants) the one in the compressor housing and move it side to side...also try pushing it in and pulling it out! if it has thrust you need a new turbo if the blades move side to side significantly you need a new turbo

just on a side note...get rid of that pacesetter manifold and invest in a good dnp

I thought about that. Thats 2nd on the list after i get this thing running right. The car came with a bunch of extra parts so im gonna sort through that first. 1g intake, 650cc injectors, dsmlink, spare ecu, extra catback exhaust, i believe a 1g MAF and a few other things.

you cant use a 1g intake manifold...it doesnt bolt right on the head...but a 2g 7 bolt can use a evo 3 intake manifold which is actually alot better....and what boost are you thinking of running to use a 650cc injector setup? and idk why you would want a 1g maf...the 1g maf only registers up to 14psi before fuel cutting a popular mod in the 1g world is 2g maf!

you would be better off getting a maft setup its about 200 bucks to do it but trust me you will love it...you can adjust your a/f from inside your car with it LOL and a bunch of other stuff like tuning your a/f to run best during different curves

heres a list of a good setup for you...i plan on it for my gsx

evo 3 lifters, cyclone intake manifold (for you the evo 3 manifold ### the cyclone doesnt work on yours), 550cc injectors big 16g turbo on 16psi, stroker kit from the 4g64, 2g pistons because they run higher compression, bs delete(if you have 7 bolt i suggest not doing this) lightened flywheel stage 2 5 puck clutch, 255 walbro fuel pump.

but yeah hold that stuff off till u get your stuff runnin LOL

also if u wanna replace the pacesetter and dont want another tubular or cant afford 1 try using a evo 3 exhaust manifold it looks stock but flows extremely well and is flanged for 16g

All this stuff is just sitting in the trunk right now. The majority of it i have to get rid of. But i believe its a 6 bolt block with a 7 bolt head that was rebuilt and then put into the car before i got it. i'll have to check the numbers. And its already got a 2.3L stroker kit so i wouldnt need the 2.4. Ive got the walbro fp already in as well. And im not sure what im going to do with the 650's just yet. Im riding stock i believe right now. Ive got a few things to get once its good to go. Ive got a feeling im gonna be broke this winter LOL

And ive seen the evo3 lifters a few places but the prices differ from 50-150 which kind of discourages me. Not sure if i should stick with topspin or get an actual set off ebay for 50 bucks

Ok i found a complete head for 150. This car now has become my DD. The civic got stolen and whoever took it set it on fire. Soooo this has become top priority. The question is, should all my lifters move or just a few per piston depending on its stopping position? Ive got about 5 that move and about 11 that are not budging

Define "Move"

your best bet is to drop Revised 3G lifters in over the stock ones. They promote better oil flow.

i think what hes stating is how they move in and out and they arent supposed to last i checked...if they move i swear they cause a oil pressure issue

but yes replace them with r3g lifters best thing u can do for the top end of your car

Ill order the lifters this friday when i get paid. Im gonna go take a look at the head today. if its in good shape ill grab it.

imo yes it would be because those valves are a pain in the arse to get out because every valve spring compressor ive ever tried didnt seem to fit

ValveMaster valve keeper tool You buy this vavle tool and use a cut in half baseball or somehting to put under the valves. It is so easy to do a valve job. I have used that tool many times and it is great.
