Ok guys im pretty new here but i've been searching the forum for about a week now and cant find a definite answer. I've got a 97' GST 2.3L stroker with a 20G turbo. The timing belt broke about 2 months ago and I finally got it replaced. I asked the guy to check for bent valves and he "claimed" he did and that they were ok.

But now when i start her up theres this LOUD ticking sound and now im getting white smoke from the exhaust!!

If you give it a little gas then of course more smoke comes out. I did an oil change with royal purple and now its now leaking a tiny bit which seems to be coming from somewhere close to the downpipe. The car has no cat so im not sure exactly what the issue is. Ive heard blown turbo, blown head gasket, o-2 sensor, a seal somewhere, pcv valve. I just cant put my finger on it. Hopefully this video will give you guys a better understanding of my frustrations.

have you noticed antifreeze on the dip stick?
My lifters ticked for a while after my rebuild, it went away for the most part
Assuming you pulled the head to have whom ever check the valves, did you get a new hg? Are any of your pistons damaged?

No coolant on the dipstick. Its got about 800 miles on it since the rebuild. The HG wasnt replaced but the valves and pistons were checked and they were fine.

The coolant is going down. Im gonna fill the resevoir today to see whats going on. But the smoke doesnt smell sweet so i know its not the antifreeze. Pause the video at about 35 seconds and you can see a bit of oil. Im guessing its leaking from that gasket thats connecting to the turbo because theres oil where the exhaust connects

I am at work I havent seen the video, They block you tube here sorry for the million+1 questions. If the coolant is going down, you can go to most any auto part stores they rent specialty tools, get a coolant pressure tester. It goes on like you rad cap with your car off, and you pump it up to to pressure to see where the coolant is coming from.

LOL its cool man. Id rather u ask then not. But i'll check autozone or advance today and see if they have a pressure tester. But im still leaking a small bit of oil from somewhere

I have a leak my self on the driver side between the lower timing cover and oil pump I can get the bs seal to set right. have you looked in that area since your timing belt did break. I say that because mind started after that nut came off the bs gear

Thats where it looks like its coming from. The oil pump looks like it has a bit of oil on it as well.

so did you re-use the head gasket????

The gasket was replaced during the rebuild. Not sure if the guy i took it to did a compression check to see if the valves were damaged or if he actually took the head off. If he did and didnt replace the gasket i'll definitely be going back up there.

Well guess its time for fun, gotta pull all that stuff off to get the cover off. if you cant see where it coming from exactly, spray some carb cleaner on the OP put the harmonic balancer BACK then start the car let it idle while its at idle go look mine was clear as day to the source.

DONT START WITHOUT THAT HARMONIC BALANCER OFF the TB belt will walk off the gear!!!!!!!

The timing cover? Thats already off. I snatched the front bumper off as well for better access.

that engine sounded to me like that guy was giving you bs...it almost sounds like your running with a bent valve or 2....just to be safe id take the head off again and inspect

Thats what I was thinking but wasnt 100% sure because of the common dsm lifter tick. If the valves are bent would it be better just to get a new head?

Well guys i checked the head last night and ive got a few bent valves. The pistons are fine though. So now the question is where I should get a new head from thats not going to make me broke?

man see this is why i dont let garages do my work for me!

just keep an eye out on here or on craigslist...i may be picking up a head and intake manifold for 75 bucks for a build so a head can be had for cheap if u look hard enough!

Have a machine shop double check in case you missed any and just order the valves

if you bend valves from jumped timing...its really just best to get a new head because you dont know if your valve journals have been cracked or ovaled or anything of the sort...

I'd run a compression test and then a leak down test, from the video it does sound like a bent/stuck valve, I'd ask the person who inspected your valves how he did so, sounds like he just did an eye ball test.

Ok so sounds like you are asking why your car is smoking?

well my friend you have already answered your own question.

If you give it a little gas then of course more smoke comes out. I did an oil change with royal purple and now its now leaking a tiny bit which seems to be coming from somewhere close to the downpipe.

^^ You have an oil leak, this oil is burning in the exhaust. Generally oil is blueish, but say your turbo is going bad, could be burning a little coolant as well so will look more white.

Inspect for the oil leak, find out where its coming from and also check your shaftplay.

Im not sure where a machine shop is around here. I'll have to ask around. I'll check for shaft play on the turbo when i get home. Hope to god its fine. I did find a used head for 40 bucks though so that saves me a little money.

Yeah i figured that part out but its just hard as hell to see where its coming from. Its not quite blue, more like a greyish/white but ive heard some synthetics burn that color instead of blue. But if it is the turbo....any suggestions? I snatched out the stock one and it has a 20g now.
