I know lifter tick is common in these cars but mine seems to have gotten louder since I bought the car. The tick isn't the same all the time either its louder, then quieter, then fast, and slow. I notice it most after I've taken a drive and the turbo timer is waiting to shut the car off. I took a few videos of it. The first is at idle, the second is at like 1100 rpms, and the next is reving to 2500. Also I noticed a odd sound after its idling down from 2500. Thanks.

Edit: A good example is the third video has a tick from like 1-4 seconds then at 5 is stops? This is what really worries me. Also I run 10w-30 already.

It deffinantly sounds like a lifter tick, does it go away after it is warmed up?

No it does not. Its actually more quite when its colder and gets louder as it gets warmer or so it seems to me but not sure.

sounds like lifter tick my car does it when its cold but after it warms up it stops, does yours stop or keep ticking after warms up? i noticed it was worse when i was low on oil but after i added some to right level it stopped ticking as much maybe try that.

It sounds nothing like lifter tick, it's too fast to be valve train noise.

EDIT: Let me rephrase, your first video sounds nothing like lifters, the other two could be.

So what do you think it is? I mean, I had the exact same sound coming from the intake side of my head at cold starts, and it would come and go..So if you're suggesting there's another problem with a noise (from video 1) don't you think now would be a good time to let the OP know to look into it.

Edit: After watching and listening to video 1 again, it almost sounds like a small exhaust leak. *shot in the dark with that guess*

The intake side is definitely louder IRL or so it seems. But the ticking never goes away really. The oil is full and new. As to what brand I run Mobil 1 Full Synthetic. I've listened and felt just about everywhere, even did a BLT. The only place the BLT leaked out was normal (I think). The exhaust might have a leak somewhere in the downpipe or o2 as it does sound a bit louder in that region and after letting off the accelerator from 2500 rpms it sounds like its pushing air out the exhaust but I can't tell. My main concern is my engine (the ticking/knocking). I'm just curious of rather I'm having failure or not. Also to the person who mentioned seafoam, I don't really know what that is or if its safe. I'll try looking into it. If you have any information on that it would be great. I'm not sure if this pertains to the noise or not but I use ECUflash and Ceddy and my boost is a knock gauge and it is pulling above 5 counts sometimes on take off 5-20 mph and other random times. I'm not driving the car until I atleast have a clue of whats going on. Thanks to everyone trying to help. If there's anymore information needed just ask. I'll do what I can.

That was me who mentioned seafoam. It sells for roughly $12 per bottle. It's easy to use, I even posted a procedure I did to rid my lifter ticking problem.

Go to the last page and read my how to:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/222686-seafoam-works-merged-25.html

Although **try not using it your crankcase, unless you're ready and are going to change your oil**.

I asked what brand of oil you were using because I use to use Royal Purple and noticed it to be louder, after reading up on other people opinions of RP vs. Mobil 1, I now run Mobil 1 15w50 and I monitered my oil psi readings to be a bit higher using it aswell. Seafoam definitely fixed the ticking problem 100%.

Sounds like you have typical lifter tick, but it sounds like major exhaust leak to me.

Edit: 3rd video, it sounds like your exhaust solenoid purge valve maybe. Totally normal if it is.

The 3rd video sounds kind of like you spun a bearing. But not as loud. Well, maybe not. Idk.

But, I've never heard lifter tick that will just start and stop at any given time.

It does sound like you have an exhaust leak.

I just changed my oil. :( So do I wait another 3000?

Not at all, make sure the car is at normal operating temp. Poor 1/2 the bottle in a glass and suck it into your intake manifold through a vaccum line (before the throttle body if you feel it needs a little cleaning aswell) and the other 1/2 of the bottle into your gas tank if you want to clean the fuel system and injectors. Try using a little more gas to dilute the seafoam. Maybe 5 gallons to a 1/2 bottle.. And try using youtube for video instructions if you feel that will help. It's a simple fix, if it's lifter tick or gummy valves.

Change your oil after monitering its use over the next few hundred miles after seafoaming, if it's a lot clearer, it's made it's way into the crankcase. Which isn't all that bad for it, just reduces viscosity and the life of your motor oil. It will take care of any moisture in there anyway.

Take a vid of that! :) love to see how much smoke comes out. I think the more, the merrier! *totally environmental friendly ;) so don't do it inside a garage* :thumb:

So I did it today. I didn't use as much as you said only because I read the bottle and it said differently. So I kinda went somewhere in the middle. I had about 2-3 gallons of gas in my car. I poured some in the tank (1/3ish) and used one of the throttle body vacuum lines to suck up some more (1/3ish) while having someone else keep the rpms up. Then I let it set for a good while (then I installed my new power antenna LOL). After that I ran the car at 2500-3000 rpms for approx 3-5 minutes as the smoke was almost cleared. Shut the car off and let it cool just a bit as I put things up and took it for a cruise and here are my results.

Also as I was doing it this happened.

I think I have a exhaust manifold gasket leak and a small crack in the top (You can see the moisture).

EDIT: ^ LOL @ iPhone Auto correcting Seafoam to Deadpan.

And then I threw a code. P0400. Which says "Exhaust Gas Recirculation Malfunction." I later cleared it and drove it and it never came back on. Any clue as to what caused this? Exhaust leak, moisture, or the hose I disconnected to pull in the Seafoam? IDK.

I must say I think it quieted down my lifter tick, but it doesn't sound eliminated as you can see here.

Any quick remedy for pulley noise and belt squeaks?

Thanks to everyone who has helped. I feel much more confident driving my car now as I know I'm not tearing it up internally. Now the short shifter and bushings this week. :)

I knew it would smoke wherever the exhaust would leak, I expected it to be around the head aswell. I would suggest you replace that manifold, the gasket and replace the lock nuts, torque them to spec and try to cross pattern your torque to evenly distribute the clamping force to the gasket and head. I believe they're M8 self locking nuts, sell for pretty cheap at the dealer, along with the gasket and torque spec is 20ft lbs. Don't crush the gasket.

By the way, the last video you posted after seafoaming, I didn't hear ANY lifter tick at all. Just that exhaust leak. And a whistle that sounded like a vaccum leak. But that could have been the camera.

Short of replacing old and worn belts, check for cracks and other signs of age. Too much slack in the belt's themselves can cause a squeel as well as the grooves are being worn and begin slipping. Sometimes they can be too tight pulling too hard on another pully, causing it to turn and rub against something. Figure out what belt or pully is squeeling and go from there. I heard of a bar of soap being a quick fix on a squeeling belt but I imagine it may render the belts traction to be reduced, thus causing more problems for you in the future.

Glad the seafoam helped out! :)

So I have this problem as well, been ticking since I bought my eclipse, friend of mine at auto zone recommended seafoam and I used it which reduced the loudness of my ticking but its constant. I put the seafoam in with 500mi left to oil change and then changed the oil, ticking was very quiet but its back and loud still, does not stop when the engine is warm, I experience no problems its just really annoying, I got rid of my really bad belt squeak this last spring and now I still have this to listen to when my radio is down, it just sounds bad, any more suggestions?
Thanks:)
